JR. Manning is usually, if not always spelled out in the contract. basically, they can have you three times a year. We would work out deals where schedueling would give us a JR. Man in we would do a crappy 2 day. Most people try and get them out of the way as quickly as possible.

As a commuter, I got a call from schedueling on a day off at 0500(et). 0400 where I was. She rudely told me that I was Jr manned for a 0700 departure. then she hung up. I called back as soon as I realized I wasn't dreaming and told her I was at home in blah blah blah.. she hung up on me again and two hours later I had the Chief Pilot on the phone telling me I had refused a Jr. Mann which is a serious offense in the company. Once I explained what was going on, they didn't press the issue.

Watch out for dirty tricks by schedueling to put Meat in the Seat!

Depends upon the work rules negotiated by your union (one of those good reasons to have a strong union). Someplaces it is, some it isn't...

Happy Holidays!
Wow! Not to flame the thread, but junior manning at Skywest is completely optional, you can answer the phone and say no, but it doesn't hurt to hear the trip. A couple of months ago I took a trip with 2.2 hrs block 9.1 hrs duty for 7.1 hrs pay. Whether you pick it up out of open time within 10 days of the trip or you recieve a call on it, it's still 1.5 pay. It was a standup, left at 10:30 PM and back at 7:30 AM. Not a bad policy for a unionless carrier.

Sked: "First Officer _____, we are calling you for a junior assigned trip."

Pilot: "Wow, it's a good thing you caught me 'cause I was just about to pop open a beer...bad news is, it's my second."

....

If you don't want to get junior manned and you do, you are a DUMBASS! I laugh my ass off at all the people bitching about getting junior manned! If you didn't want it and got it, you deserve it!

Off topic, but tell me the schedulers don't call you guys "First Officer ____"

Do they?

One: Don't answer the phone.

Two: Get a diffrent ring tone on your home phone for unknown caller ID's if your company's don't show up,

Example of a Junior Man conversation I had years back:

Scheduling: Hi @@@@, your junior manned today for a PIT-CAK roundtrip.

Me: OK, but I'm at home

Sched: So, we will deadhead you.

Me: Does it show you were I live? I live in Tulsa, OK. Your aware that US Airways dosen't even fly over Oklahoma?

Schd: No, I wasent...Where's the closest airport to you that Airways serves?

Me: Dallas!

Sched: Ok, I can get you a cab then.

Me: What? Your going to stick me in a cab for 4 hours?

Sched: Yes, you are the only one available for this trip. (Um, Yea)

Me: Your crazy lady. Your not sticking me in a cab for 4 hours, deadhead to PIT and then be unable to get home untill the next day.

Sched: Are you refusing to fly?

Me: Actually, I can smell the crack pipe your smoking through this phone. So yea, I'm refusing to fly.

Sched: "click"

Actually got written up for this by the scheduler for accusing her of being on drugs. CP thought it was funny.

That works when you are at home, but when they contact you at work you are totally screwed. No one I know answers the phone at home, but you can't stop them from getting you on the in range call or a note on your release.

For the really junior guys, how often does this happen? Once, twice, a month? Every time you have a day off?

It is a nice way to make some extra cash around the holidays. You should thank the company for giving you the opportunity to do this. It also gets you out of the house on holidays, when your annoying family members are visiting.

When the phone rings early in the morning and you answer it like a dumba**, use this:

You: Hello?
CS: Captain (you) we are junior manning you for a trip.
You: Honey......(handing your wife the phone) it's for your husband.

Works every time!

AF

Junior manning is why...

1) you keep a can of soda by the phone so you can have the popping sound of a beer can, then tell them you're not good for 12 hours...

2) you give them a cell number and say, well, sure I can make it, but I'm on Yap, in the middle of the south pacific, but if you positive space me home, to get a uniform, I can be there by, say, Thursday...

3) you use your voicemail!

4) you negotiate for a hotel room, positive space travel and take the premium pay, if you want to do the trip

5) if you're at Eagle, you get on the computer to see what it is they're trying to stick you with, then decide if you want to answer the phone.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. I've never been jr. manned, and if they ever try to- I guarantee I'll be drunk.
I'm drunk right now, and glad that my company doesn't have junior manning.

Did Xjet get rid of junior manning with their latest contract?

They do at my airline, and I laugh every time. Then they laugh back at me.
