All that an Bobby Knight too. HaHaHaHaHaHa!!!!!

Lubbock may "suck" but the women there, are Texas' best.

Lubbock may "suck" but when someplace in Texas "sucks", it's still head and shoulders above the rest of the country.

Seriously, We central Texans pick on west Texas, but don't none of you furaners dare call any a our fellow Texans names. We Texans have to pick on each other to keep ourselves humble. Our superiority over the rest of ya'll naturally leads to a good ol fashioned case of the big head, and knowing that the big head is a bad thing, we have to pick on each other in order to maintain a modicum of humility. I just wish I could explain Natalie Maines. I can only say that she came from the high plains but claims Austin as home and we all know that Austin is a country all to itself. Most of us try and overlook the Austin attitude because the BBQ is so good there, and the music. Who said something about ADD pilots? See, I knew where I was going, Music. If a musician played at Threadgills, the Broken Spoke, or the Oasis, I'll listen to em.

Do ya know why Texas doesn't slide off into the gulf? Because Oklahoma $ucks!!!! just a joke, just a joke. Oklahoma is the second best state in the union. Except in football season, when they rank only one place above Arkansas..

Fire away:-)

When I want to rock:

Boston
Van Halen
Ted Nugent
AC/DC
Led Zep
Triumph
Ozzy w/ Randy Rhoads
Pantera
Black Label Society
Judas Priest

When I feel mellow:

Sarah McLachlan
Pink Floyd
Crosby, Stills, & Nash
The Soundscapes channel on my digital cable radio station.

Lubbock / Amarillo: I believe the greatest restriction to visibility are oil derricks and tumble weeds. Normal visibility in the air is about unrestricted.
Some college student there explained me the nightlife opportunities in LBB: cowboy bar, cowboy bar, cowboy bar, McDonalds, cowboy bar...... (poor girl came from the caraibian).
Flatlanders are in de cd player right now..

As for Lubbock and the rest of West Texas, at least it's not so humid. another 90+% humidity morning here on the Gulf coast.

Ever watch the 80s stuff on VH1? The 80's rocked!!!!

The 80s, which was rife with unimaginable, talentlesss, repetitive, techno-pop totally sucked!! Or the interchangeable, can't distinguish one from the other because they too, are all the same, "hair bands"., i.e., Dokken, Cinderella, Motley Crue, Rio, Poison, Ratt, etc, etc, ad nauseum. The absolute bottom of the rock -n- roll music genre from its beginning to its current state,

Of course, this is only my opinion, but it's the opinion of an extremely passionate and ecclectic rock music fanatic since the very beginning of rock-n-roll. If you want to see what I'm listening to now, scroll up a bit and find my post, and you'll see I'm not some burn out stuck in the 50s. 60s or 70s.

Screw the techno. I was talking about the 80's rock. It has been the influence of some great bands. I mean come on, look at “The Cure.” They rocked harder than probably at least half the garbage bands that you hear on radio and TV. And what about the Ramon’s? I don't agree with what they represent but they were the leaders for the down-to-earth rock sounds that some of today's great bands have evolved into.

And no offense or anything, but isn't Dashboard a chick band? I know it is a guy who sings but it reminds me of a NSYNC (sp) with a guitar. (No offense Matt.) He (Chris Carabba) should have kept that hardcore edge he had going for him when he was still in Further Seems Forever. All in IMHO!

The goods!!!!!!!!!!!!!

click here for something that rocks!

And BTW--Not that many of you will care, but Further Seems Forever, Anberlin, Emery, and mewithouyou are starting a coast to coast tour in February!

I cannot wait. They are all my pretty much my favorite bands and that show will probably be the highlight of my 2004 year. I don’t have much of life I guess.:D

Hey futureRJ ill second that

BT
Paul Oakenfold

I listen to a lot of house and drum & bass:

Danny Tenaglia
LTJ Bukem
Deep Dish

Reggae:

Marley and all his kids
Luciano
Buju Banton
Sizzla
Ras Shiloh

Underground Hip Hop:

Dilated Peoples
Gangstarr
Beat Junkies

I don't listen to all the spoonfed crap that cross's the airwaves, you really do get what you pay for!! The only radio I listen to is TOM LEYKIS, priceless.

James Taylor- was awesome at MGM Grand- great concert.. (chicks seem to dig him too):D :D

kenny Chesney- no shoes, no shirt, no problems:D

Frank Sinatra- New York New York (no sarcasm intended):D :D

Paul Simon- nice house in the Hamptons:D

"Good '80's music"

A thread titled "Good '80's Music" would be a very short thread.

But, there was *some*.

The Police
U2
Robert Cray
and, um, Rush.

Yeah. That about sums it up.

Right now I really like Coldplay, Moby and that last Johnny Cash CD, American IV: The man comes around. AWESOME!

Travis is cool too.

I'm also developing an appreciation for ambient and Italian folk music (and even opera--with subtitles).

Ciao.

I have learned not to "label" or pigeonhole any band or music. That's just an indication of a closed mind. However, I'm not here to debate the merits of any one band, but to express my opinion of the 80s in general, which I still contend produced overall some of the weakest music in the history of rock. There might be one or two exceptions, as there are to any rule, but this one holds true, IMO.

BTW, I listen to Dashboard Confessional for the guitar work, which in many cases, is excellent. I could really care less if Chris Carabba reminds you of NSYNC with a guitar. Try listening to the guitar sometime.

But, like I said....music is a very personal issue, and what moves one person may do nothing for another. I am simply expressing my opinion.

And you are absolutely right. I respect your opinion and want to apologize for what I said about Dashboard. I made that comment because I guess I felt like being a smart@--. But I know what you are saying and agree that the guitar work is very talented, I just think he (Chris) was more cut out to fit a band like FSF. It all worked out for the better anyway though, because it got FSF the new singer they now have (Jason). He (Jason) is the most talented performer/songwriter/artist I have ever experienced. And Chris is able to do what he has more of a passion towards--writing songs for 16 year old girls. Just kidding!!!! :D :D :D

Seriously though I love music. It is one of the coolest things about life. And it wouldn't be the same without the diversity of musical preferences.

I have a rotation of about 90 bands in my MP3 player but my favorites right now are:
TOOL
Audioslave
Mudvayne
A Perfect Circle
Disturbed
Korn
System of a Down
Type O Negative
Anthrax
Chevelle
Adema
Fingertight
ill nino
Motograter
Ra
Seether
Smile Empty Soul
Static-X
Three Days Grace
Trapt
Godhead

When I have my ADD in control I will sometimes listen to some of the slower bands like The Police and Dave Matthews. This happens very rarely because anything too slow just is plain boring and can't hold my attention.
It's kind of funny because everyone I meet can't believe I listen to this type of music because I am relatively conservative and older than 99% of the people who listen to new Heavy Metal. I've been listening to it since the early 70's and didn't feel the need to change.

Lotsa great music!!

Cut my teeth on the Police and U2, back in the '80s. Gotta love Stevie Ray and any of the old bluesmen. Being from Mississippi, I'm kinda partial to those old guys. I hate to be a fence sitter but I really like a lot of stuff from Hank Sr. to The Roots. I can do without the arena rock stuff of the '70s/'80s and the hair bands of the '80s/'90s.

BUT . . . . . You gotta love REAL Country Music. Pretty much what TX_Pilot and enigma have been espousing. There's a lot of good country music out there and it AIN'T bein' done by Garth Bra-WOO-WOO-WOO-WOOKS or Shania Twain. Now that I live in Texas I can listen to Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, The Flatlanders, Yellowbelly, Mark David Manders, Junior Brown, Kevin Deal, and everyone else I'm forgettin' to mention on 95.3 The Range, KHYI. http://www.khyi.com

Oh, my wife is from Newfoundland and has turned me on to an incredible band from up there, Great Big Sea. Their most recent album hit #1 in Canada. They play traditional Newfoundland music, kinda Celtic, but revved up a bit. http://www.greatbigsea.com

Jimmy for me!!

Fly Chicaga...

Not to fear!!! My iPod is loaded to the limit with Buffett albums and I never leave on a trip without it. There's nothing like a little Jimmy to brighten an otherwise dreary four day!

Don't stop the carnival!

Queens of the Stone Age & the Strokes

Finally someone mentioned Queens of the Stone Age and the Strokes, those bands would make the rock gods proud.

Since beginning of this thread I discovered a really good NY band, Interpol , they're kinda like a Cure/ Smiths sounding music. Non-stop playin in my car. They don't get any radio play though (maybe that's a good thing?)

White Stripes

Highly recommended. If the White Stripes play in a town near you I strongly recommend checking em out. You will not believe what those kids can do with one guitar and a drum (no bass). Their set list revolves around blues covers, & probably the best show i've seen in years. (forget all the hype MTV is giving them, these kids are the real deal)

I absolutely agree with you there. Music is one of the most important things in life (mine anyway), right up there with the basics....food, water, shelter, etc. Some of my earliest memories from when I was abound 3 or 4 (this would have been '58-'59) involve my first exposure to "rock-n-roll" music, and it's been a complete passion ever since.

I have a large collection, so the rotation changes frequently...but I thought a more valid method instead of just listing some names of bands that I like would be to go down to the truck, get the CD case, and write down what's in the current rotation. It gives a fairly broad view of what I'm listening to right now, but like I said...the rotation changes often. Here's the current list:

Cracker - Forever + Bonus Live CD
Jimi Hendrix - Live at the Fillmore East
Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Sister Sweetly
The Allman Brothers Band- The Fillmore Concerts
3 Doors Down - Away From the Sun
Eagles - Desperado
Robin Trower - The Essential Robin Trower
Cracker - Kerosene Hat
David Gray - A New Day at Midnight
Everclear - Slow Motion Daydream
Sublime - The Best of Sublime--Millinium Collection
The Allman Brothers Band - Hittin' the Note
Blues Traveler - Brooklyn Bridge
Gov't Mule - Live at the Roxy in ATL--New Year's Eve, 1998
Staind - 14 Shades of Grey
Linkin Park - Meteora
Savoy Brown - The Savoy Brown Collection
Led Zeppelin - How The West Was Won
Live - Birds of Pray

And crash-proof:

I agree with you about the White Stripes. I was living in Lansing, MI a couple of years ago, and the MSU college radio station was playing them before any of the "mainstream" rock stations got wind of them (being from nearby Detroit). I was hoping to catch them if/when they came through, but it just never happened. It would have been great back then, since I'm sure the venue would have been small and intimate, compared to now that they have a wider audience, and play to larger crowds.

I think that is a good idea. Instead of just listing who you listen to, list what is in your CD player or whatever RIGHT NOW. I don't have a rotator (so it is just one at a time for me) but if you were to go into my truck you would be hearing blindside. I am listening to Emery right now (through the computer) and have plans for a FSF session next time I go for a drive. :D

I am such a stock, aren’t I?:D :D :D

Speaking of Queens of the Stone Age, I had them on my plane a few months ago. I recognized Josh Homme and approached him. He was, of course, very cool and had me walk over to the window with him and tell him all about the CRJ. No, Dave Grohl was not with them.
