It's official, VA gets the gates. Things should get interesting at Love.

(Reuters) - Virgin America on Friday said it would offer new flights from Dallas Love Field after it was awarded two gates at that airport by the U.S. Justice Department.
San Francisco-based Virgin America, a carrier in which Richard Branson's Virgin Group has a minority stake, said it will start flights between New York's LaGuardia, Ronald Reagan Washington National, Los Angeles and San Francisco airports and Dallas Love Field in October.
American Airlines Group agreed to give up the two Love Field gates Virgin America is receiving to settle a U.S. lawsuit that sought to block its merger with US Airways. Southwest Airlines, which controls 16 of 20 gates at Dallas Love Field, and Delta Air Lines had also expressed interest in the two gates.
Virgin America said it plans to move its current operations at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Love Field in October. DFW is the city's largest airport.
Virgin America recently won takeoff and landing rights at New York's LaGuardia Airport and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport that American Airlines also agreed to divest in the merger settlement. American was also required to give up gates at airports in Chicago, Miami, Boston and Los Angeles under that agreement.

Well, so much for Flopgut's Government-Southwest conspiracy theories.

Too bad Glee wouldn't accept my bet that Delta would most assuredly not receive these gates. We could have basked in another month free of his bloviations.

Let the games begin and this should present yet another outlet for the SWA bashers, it must be great to be that successful that almost every thread on here turns into an SWA bash.
If SWA wasn't making so much money it would be laughable.
Remember what Herb did to the other airlines at DAL who tried to ruin him - all gone

Howie was correct for once. Too bad the gates couldn't have been multi purpose or multi airline. I think DL was going to run 6 daily 717s to ATL and then a bunch of E175s all over. DL may actually get zilch, which is ridiculous. Oh well, I have a feeling DL will probably still make over $3 billion in profit this year anyway, even without the DAL gates.

Bye Bye---General Lee

Delta had a base in Dallas? Why do you think
AA wants VA out of DFW and to LOVE? VA can grow
Out of DFW all day long?!?! Hope the city gets
paid for their gates uses in a timely manner.

So VAs flights to ORD,SFO,LGA,DCA is such great competition. How many flights are there to these cities already from Dallas?

SW said they would go to 10 other cities...cities like CLT. Check out those prices from Dallas. AA/US no competition.

SW would hire how many more jobs, and VA would hire how many?

Great news! Hope VA wasn't too soon to celebrate...

Virgin America CEO David Cush tells Today in the Sky that the carrier has an agreement with American for the gates and that the deal has the approval of the Justice Department.
The deal would still need to be OK'd by the city of Dallas, which owns the airport.
"The consent of the city manager is required for American to transfer these gates," Cush tells Today in the Sky by phone. "Our view is that it should be forthcoming quickly. At the same time, we are respectful of the city's process. So we're going to participate in that."

This, and the end language of the WA, are small victories. But they very good news for fair competition. VA is going to make some serious $ at Love.

So decreasing competition at DFW for AA (and where VA could add more and more flights out of DFW with more gates makes more sense I guess) We all know why AA wanted VA to move.

Going to laugh when United flies their 757-300 out of DAL to those same cities.

The additional Southwest cities include: Charlotte, N.C.; Charleston, S.C.; Detroit; Indianapolis; Memphis; Minneapolis/St. Paul; Newark, N.J.; Philadelphia; Raleigh/Durham, N.C.; Sacramento, Calif.; San Francisco; and Seattle/Tacoma. A little math tells us that some of those cities would get only one round trip a day.

In addition, Southwest said that it would start service to five more cities out of Love Field in 2015: Boston; Oakland; Panama City Beach, Fla.; Portland, Ore.; and San Jose, Calif.

I sure as hell would have waited for Dallas to ok what the DOJ suggested. I don't care if the DOJ and the Pope endorsed VA, they are not from Texas. Shouldn't change the decision, but a huge misstep on VA's part going forward.

"...not from Texas"? Is that the criteria? Wait... Are you saying that those gates should go to a good Texas airline like Southwest? :)

Uh, no Bubba;) I do think waiting until all parties, especially Dallas, agree VA gets them. GK hasn't conceded anything yet.

Both AA and the DOJ have chosen VX for the gates. AA tried to transfer the gate lease to VX and the city council denied it. AA has a right in their contract a clause to sublease the two gates to another airline and it "cannot be unduly denied" by Dallas city officials. Legally, the city doesn't have a leg to stand on if both the DOJ and AA want VX to get the gates. They are only shooting themselves in the foot, but pressure no doubt from a legacy (not LCC) SWA and their lobbied/bought LEK consultants.

SW would bring the most passengers!

Maybe. Until SWA announces a full schedule (quite a few cities would get only one roundtrip per day from DAL) and until they publish the fares, it is hard to say. Besides, do you really define "competition" being one airline going from 80% of owning an airport's gates to 90%? Sounds like a complete monopoly.

WHERE WERE VA/DELTA when the WRIGHT AD was in EFFECT---I ask again WHERE were they? Southwest had a thumb on them for years out of LOVE!!!!

If SW didn't stay there would be High raise building there, condos and everyone would be under AA mercy.

VA and any airline could have come to DAL anytime and fly to a neighbor state and then any where else in the USA, but they didn't want to do that to fly to LOVE then. I am not sure what VA would get out of Love...United is going to go to SFO, ORD, EWR, IAH from Dallas Love too. Southwest wanted to go to Raleigh, Charlotte, Panama City FL, MKE, BOS,SEA, ORF, IND...to COMPETE with AA out of DFW.

Hey if VA gets the gates, the traveling folks will get more options on 4 cities versus 15 cities

Competition, compare the prices at home and decide which has the best price and drive or ride to that airport. They are a whopping 20 minutes away.

Maybe whoever loses will sue and tie the gates up in court for years and no one will get to use the gates. Sound familiar?
