I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine. He was a 99 hire at UAL, spent some time on furlough, came back and was just offered a job with Fed Ex. He told me that when he went to give his resignation to the CP, the CP (in ORD) was very friendly about it, even talked with him about it, not trying to convince him to stay, especially with a Fed Ex offer. He didn't want to resign from UAL, as he said it was a GREAT job, and had an awsome time there, but thought the decision to go to Fed Ex would be a better one.
What struck me was, when he handed the secretary his letter of resignation, she put it on top of a stack she had on her desk, he asked her what that was, and it was a stack of resignations, over 700 of them.
My point to all of this, if someone in the know at UAL has any information regarding any of this, where the heck is everyone going that is bailing out from United?
Regards,
Midge

Would you want to work there? It speaks volumes when people that currently work there are leaving in droves. But if when they hire again, this message board will be swamped with questions from guys asking how to fill out the vaunted scantron form!

Unfortunately it will be those of us from the regionals who see a watered down United as a better option to the crap places we currently work at.

Well, unfortunately the work rules will look very familiar. :( TC

HAY GUYZ! Can anyone tell me what the junior base at United is? How long on reserve? How long to upgrade? QOL? THANX!!

Not that there aren't people leaving UAL, but do you really believe there is a secretary somewhere with a stack of 700 resignations sitting on her desk?

According to the UAL employee website there are 752 pilots exercising bypass rights. I do know of a few guys who have left, and many that are looking.

Bypass is sitting on the fence. There have not been 700 Resignations. Nice try at flame bait. If I could cut and past I would put the latest numbers from the company and ALPA on here. The bypass guys are just sitting on the fence and will be forced to either return or resign as they move up the recall list from the bottom. Those that do not return are not giving resignation letters to a sec. They are out processed over the phone as they do not hold UAL id's or manuals, they took those from them on furlough.

MRYFLYER you misunderstood my blog. It was not my intent to "flame bait" as bypass means something completely different than resignation.

From Skynetlite:
Junior Pilot to Receive Recall Offer:
clearpixel.gif
Seniority #: 8287
clearpixel.gif
Hire Date: 09/10/2000Pilots Exercising Bypass Rights: 752

There are 8655 pilots on the seniority list.
So, to break it down, you've got 368 pilots who have yet to be recalled and 752 who have exercised their right to bypass.

I'm on bypass; I will probably accept a Feb class date and immediately go on military leave. There are a LOT of UAL pilots on military leave. How many of the ones on mil leave return is unknown.
There are also resignations of pilots currently on property, but I'd guess that it's no more than 50/yr (total WAG based on UAL ALPA and other message boards).

700 resignations is possible if it includes all of the pilots on furlough who sent in resignation letters to get hired at other companies, such as FedEx. For the most part, United hasn't honored furloughees' resignation letters - ie, they're still on the seniority list. I know of at a few UAL furloughees who put in resignation letters and are currently on bypass.

As for me, I'm almost 46 and will be on military leave until I'm 51. I plan on returning to United for 9 years. PLEASE don't change the retirement age; 9 more years at United will be more than enough for me.

I guess you didn't read the part of my post where I wrote:

Stop being such an a$$ and claim to know everything, you might not be so hated!
I was only asking a question! My question is where are all the guys leaving going? There are "CURRENT/ACTIVE" pilots leaving!

Some are walking away from flying, others are going to carriers where, 'boxes don't b!tch.'
I'd say that covers almost all situations where active pilots are resigning. (There's always an exception). I don't think that (m)any are going to other passenger carriers.

Midge,
If you look at the "airline industry" in a historical perspective you will notice that the "box" carriers don't go through the same cyclical pattern exhibited by the pax carriers.
Fuel has probably bottomed out and will go back to and sustain the 60-70+ dollars per barrel that OPEC desires. With that as a background what do you think will happen to the prices of pax tickets? They will get hit with the "fuel surcharge" again and again and the carrier with the lowest costs / best fuel hedging will win. UAL has proven it can't hang as our s--t is in the street and we are basically for sale.
A typical UAL aircraft has 130-350 seats, and when fuel goes up by 10-20% the cost will be spread of those limited number of seats. On a "box" carrier, they have an almost unlimited number of "pax's" and spreading the fuel surcharge over them will be much more digestible to the point of being un-noticeable. Which do you think is a better business case? Both FedEx and UPS have been hitting record profits, buying large French aircraft and enjoying none of the fear associated with the carrying of people.
IMHO tell your friend to go INS direct to FedEx and don't look back.
