It is an awesome site! I've been living in the "F105 cinema" watching movies. I just read "When Thunder Rolled" by Ed Rasimus and it really drew me into the Vietnam era combat theatre. Now I crave every book written about it. These guys were legends!

Just finished that book as well, awesome!!! Thud Ridge is next on my list, I hear it's just as good. Ed Rasimus also has another book (Palace Cobra) about his time flying the F-4 in Vietnam if your interested.

Thanks for the website, those guys are must have had a special compartment for their balls!

Ed is an acquaintance of mine, I bought "When Thunder Rolled" and had him autograph it, as a gift to a friend of mine who flies for the 150th FW Tacos.

His book he is finishing up now is about Robin Olds.

Those men are my childhood heroes...I get choked up everytime I watch the videos with Karl Richter. Only 24 years old when we lost him...A great American, A great fighter pilot that will live on in the hearts of us all that understand the sacrifice of our nations warriors.

Great gift idea. Palace Cobra is next on my list.

Reading Flying through Midnight by John Halliday right now. It's a C-123's pilots account of a his time in the Vietnam. Half way through and would suggest it to anyone...good stuff.

The Vietnam era has a special place in my heart. I really enjoyed Air War Vietnam bt Frank Harvey. It's a collection of short stories on various aircraft types and their missions. One of my greatest heroes, my dad, is even in one of the stories!

Thud Ridge is an excellent book! I grew up next door to an ex 105 driver. His stories were amazing. I will have to check out "When Thunder Rolled." Thanks for the link!

A lot
I just started Going Downtown and I can't wait to finish it. Not to turn this into Oprah's book of the month club or anything but Thud Ridge and When Thunder Rolled are two excellent books. May I also suggest 100 Missions North by Ken Bell. This book is very similar to Rasimus's. So much so that Rolled and 100 Missions actually have the exact same art work on the covers.

Ya, we kinda hijacked this thread, but I would like to keep this rolling. I'm always looking for good books to read. Mods any chance we could get this moved to another thread titled Good books or something?

I'm 100 pages into Palace Cobra now, can't put it down.

All great books (although Duke's doesn't read the same after his little fiasco). One other I'd highly recommend is "My Secret War" by Richard Drury. It's about flying A-1 Skyraiders out of Laos as a FAC as well as providing cover for downed pilot rescues. Awesome. Someone told me he just retired from Fedex recently. I wish I had a chance to fly w/ him.

You're right about the "Sandy" part but I don't think he was ever a FAC? (minor point) He is a helluva writer and his latest book, "Flightlines", is a great compilation of his magazines columns.

I just picked up the book "Palace Cobra" by Ed Rasimus. I'm pretty excited to get crack'n at it. It was $7.99 at Barnes & Nobles. While I was there, there was a good book called "Bye Bye Baby" It's a reflection with photos on the F-14 Tomcat. It's like 40 bucks but I spend 2 hours looking at it for free. If you want it's 30 dollars on Amazon or 40 dollars in the flesh at Barnes & Nobles.
