Telex 850 in CRJ?

Has anyone used this headset in the CRJ? Do you need to wear earplugs with it even though its ANR? I have ENC David Clarks....should I just stick with these? Thank you!

I also tried the 850 on the CRJ and found very little noise attenuation. I returned it and got my $450 dollars back! Not worth the money.

Telex 850 ANR won't work in the CRJ unless you leave the mic hot. It's really irritating to both pilots at cruise with that hiss in the background from a hot mic. Once you switch the mic off, the ANR loses power and the jet noise comes back. Frustrating!

Not true, the ANR still receives power with the "hot mic" off. The jack is still powered, just not "Transmitting" when turned off.

The CRJ isnt that loud to begin with. I use a 750 and the only time its even a little noisy is when your fast at lower altitudes i.e. FL180 and 300-320 kts.

The 850 got rid of all of the static from the headset. I couldn't hear a difference between when I had the mic on or off (although the captains definatly could). The 850 did not cut out any of the wind noise. It sounds as if you are not wearing a headset at all.

The 750 with comfortable earplugs is the best way to go in the CRJ.

Also Tried The 85o And Had The Same Problems Loud Not That Comfortable (big Ears) And Found It Difficult To Tune The Volumes For Atc And Captain. I Spent The Extra Money On The Bose And Havent Looked Back.

Use the 750's but go to Radio Shack and get a pair of replacement earpieces. Not the foam ones that come with the set but they make a soft, "pleather" covers as well. It makes a world of difference and only costs like 7-8 bucks.

I have the 850. I love it. I used the 750 for a while and I think there is a world of difference in the 850. I think you can still hear a little wind noise but it is not bad at all. Actually someone told me that the wind noise is at a freq that is not covered by any ANR...so no ANR headset would remove that noise, only one cupped around your ears or earplugs.

I know everyone has their own opinions...but I like mine.

I tried the 850. I wanted really badly to like it because of its small size, light weight, and simplicity, but I just couldn't because it was too darn loud. I can't stand wearing earplugs, so I tried, and subsequently bought, the Sennheiser (HMEC 25 something or other). Crafted in beautiful Deutschland, this is the BMW of headsets. Fine Teutonic workmanship wins out again.

The package includes one earpiece and one mic cover, so get two before you leave Radio Shack. I remember after I got this I kept the volume control on the CRJ about 25-50% less than when I had the foam pads that come with the Telex 750's.

No one has mentioned the Sennheisers! These are superior to the Telex models. Was testing out my sennheisers and then flew a trip with an FO who had the Telex 850 ANR. We swapped before taxiing out for a flight. At the runway I got mine back because of the noticeable difference between the two. They are an extra $100 but well worth it. You get a reduced price by shopping on the alpa website.

I'll second the pleather covers from Radio Shack for the 750's. I used to have turn the volume all the way up and now its at about half that level. Like said buy two sets of the earpieces. It also cups your ear better than the foam covers and blocks out a little more wind noise.

I looked for those in one Radio Shack but could not find them. Didn't really know what I was looking for though, either. I remember ClubORD mentioning them in another thread. Radio Shack's web-site is not very helpful. Will look some more then might break down and buy from Oregon Aero. They have retro-fit kit.

The best thing for a Mo-fo to do is try out a number of headsets and then make a decision based on your experience. Some people swear by headsets I can't stand. Whatever works for you is best. I happen to like my Sennheisers very much. Even with dead batteries, it works great in the CRJ. In my opinion, you really need a bit of ear cup to cut out the wind (and recirc and display fans on the 700 sound like a tornado!!) noise.

This new Lightspeed headset looks kinda cool, and I bet it will block out all the barbie jet wind noise. I'm not sure if they are actually available yet so I guess the jury is still out. I think the best thing about it, is the built in secondary audio input for your MP3 player...

True, true!! This Mo-Fo has tried almost every headset around. The Sennheiser HMEC 25's work great without the batteries, but alas they squeeze the noggin after awhile. Tried the Telex 750's with earplugs and it wasn't too bad, but I was on the quest to find something better. So then I tried the Telex 850 and liked the comfort. It cut out enough noise for me, but the sound quality sucked (may have been that set). Returned those and pulled out the custom ear molds with a Telex 5X5 and found a winner. I have some of those pleather things laying around so I'm going to give that a try in my next trip.

The part # from Radio Shack is 43-2004 and they all are on clearance now for $1.61 for the ear cushion & mic screen. Buy 2 of them for $3.22. They are getting rid of them so they are kind of hard to find. I'll see tomorrow if they work.
