For those operators out there who use flight attendants, do you have a policy on visible tattoos? One of the flight departments which I am currently working with has a newhire FA who has an anklet tattoo. It's visible through pantyhose, but just barely. My opinion on the matter has been asked, and I am looking for other opinions as well.

I personally do not have an issue with it, but am looking for others viewpoints.

Post some pics of the offending body art, then we can give you a better answer.

Jeff, I think its the sign of the times, but you put him/her with the someone thats old school, you bet, its probably going to be an eye catcher and a conversation piece....

Jeff,

For the life of me I can't figure it out but tatoos are very much a sign of the times. You can watch 5 hours of TV dedicated to the subject every day fer-cryin-out-loud! Maybe it's Gen-X's inability to envision their lives beyond next week. Maybe the concept of consequence has been totally eviserated. Maybe, because nothing else in their lives is permanent, the notion of it is beyond comprehension. I don't know!

In any event, one comes quickly to the conclusion that it's a judgement - what's acceptable vs. what's not. Seems to me the list of attributes posessed by a F/A include pleasant appearance but superior service depends upon so much more. So I think you gotta make a judgement, Captain. I know we live in a world increasingly hostile to that notion but that's why they pay ya the big bucks. Can you live with it? Can you find someone as good without one? Maybe the job posting lists tatoo-free as "preferred" rather than "required".

Around my house the rule is "Not while I'm paying tuition". I'm hoping that gets me through the most vulnerable time.

caseyd

It's a catch 22. I don't think that you can ask someone if they have a tattoo during a job interview.

If you don't want them, then what I would do is add it to the job description, have them read it sign it and advise them that deviations during probation will be met with dismal.

Our department has a no facial hair for men (an women too, lol) along with a no visible piercing policy. Earing's and mustaches don't get in the door.

This policy was brought to my attention by the CP during the interview process when I was asked to read the job description out of the flt manual. Then I was asked if I would have a problem.

The same can be done with tattoo's if you choose to do so. You just need to have a uniform guideline that requires skirts and no pants and make them aware of this.

Currently we only have one FA and she is tattoo free, so this has not become an issue.

This way if it shows up

I'm old school...ink is for ex-cons...there is no such thing as "tasteful"

I see ink and I think scumbag...

We have our share Jeffrey. Company doesn't have a policy as far as I know although if it were visible during the interview, I doubt they'd get the job.

PS When are you home? It's been too long. Love to S.

Ya I have to agree, tattoos are taboo. I think that the FA's should exude class, considering the clients we haul... I say NAY to visible tattoos. Same for body piercings other than ears. That goes for all the crew, not just FA's

Just plain tacky.. I would not even consider hiring a flight attendant with a tattoo..piercings are just as bad. For me a tattoo says wrong side of the tracks...
