I noticed that most news articles and even airline pilot central.com dont refer to SWA as a legacy carrier. The only two requirements I found to be a legacy carrier were; exist before deregulation and be a low cost/low fare airline. Southwest has been around before 1978 an their tickets are of average price, sometimes more expensive. If anything I think US Airways should lose its legacy standing as it consistently offers the cheapest fares and has some of the lowest labor costs. I'm thinking less than two years SWA will get its proper recognition.

Then you can tell all your friends you fly for a "mighty" legacy carrier. It's also great with the women.

Oh come on. Legacy means its been a major player since the early years of revenue air line companies. It's just a brand. The only people who give it meaning are the nerds who mock the term out of envy.

"Legacy software" is not necessarily considered to be a complimentary term.

That's what my research showed. The use of "legacy" as an adjective started with computer software, which meant antiquated. I don't think it's a complimentary term. I just find it fascinating how the term startered and stuck in our industry. Legacy became the new major, I just can't remember when.

On what planet do you do your "research" ?

" A legacy carrier, in the United States, is an airline that had established interstate routes by the time of the route liberalization which was permitted by the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 and was thus directly affected by that act. It is distinct from a low-cost carrier, (a term fostered as a form of disparagement against post deregulation start-up air carriers, and the traditional airlines once heavily unionized work groups) which in the United States are generally new airlines that were started to compete in the newly deregulated industry.
Typical characteristics of legacy carriers are that they provide a higher level of services than a low-cost carrier..."

A short and dirty explanation:

The "Legacy Airlines" were the REAL airlines BEFORE De-Reg.

You know, the ones that PAID their employees and provided a real SERVICE to their Customers.

Southwest and De-Regulation are what started the slide to the BOTTOM of this barrel....And NOW....The Bottom is The Top.

History sucks...But, total DENIAL is even worse. Get a Clue.

A 12 year old could do a better Book Report than your current assessment of this Industry.

No, legacy airlines have all been through bankruptcy and are now highly profitable. Neither describes WN.
