degree

PHP:
excuses are for losers

Billy is right about one thing. No HR person will be impressed by perceived excuses for not having a degree. However, they would be impressed by the fact that you were determined to get a degree in spite of your other obligations. Be very careful not to justify lacking a "preferred" qualification.

Thanks.

I am actually enrolled at ERAU. Have been since I have been in the mainland.

this subject is lame, not what the original poster was after.

once on here, a Jetblue pilot said, "degrees are for airlines that haven't figured out how to hire pilots."

oh well, trash this one, or we can all drop it....

pray for surf!!

si yi'uos masse(mahalo)

safe flying to everyone!

aw shucks...I was still waiting for Bill Nelson to offer any kind of explanation for his aircraft listed.

I guess you can just make stuff up, but I thought most people on here had a little more pride than that when it came to their profile.

I was waiting for the same thing. Would have been nice to see when he allegedly flew the F-22 and the SR-71. I flew quite a few business efforts at Edwards refueling the F-22. Got to meet most of the pilots. It's a VERY small community. Some of my buds I flew with got U-2 slots at Beale and knew most of the guys flying the SR-71. Would be very interesting to see if the story checks out.

As far as treating the enlisted, you should treat EVERYONE they way you would want to be treated. I was presented a Boom Operator coin and made an honorary boom operator at my last base (and yes I have 2 contacts--allegedly :) ) The crew chiefs still stay in touch with me as well. I'm sure the Guard unit that hired me called my enlisted friends first and then called my commander. OK enough of the Golden Rule.

My thoughts: press and get the degree. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to finish it later. Ultimately it is your decision. Do what is right for YOU.

By the way did Bill Nelson mention he commanded the Starship Enterprise? I might have missed that one.

Averages

This thread got carried away from the man's question. As I stated, you can get some insight into averages (for JB anyway) from their website. I hope you ignored all the rhetoric about degree versus no degree and got your info.

I do know this; a degree at JB is preferred but not required. In fact, during the Phase I interview, the subject of a degree will not come up whether you are talking to an HR or Pilot Recruiter unless you use it in one of your stories. That being said when and if you go to Phase II (Background Check and review from the Pilot Hiring Committee) I am sure that any college you have (degree completed or otherwise) will be looked upon favorably. My only point was that the guys here that stated that an unfinished degree is as good as none at all is probably true in the respect that you cannot state that you have one. Plain and simple. Anyway, good luck in your quest.

Happy Memorial Day All.

Of course my profile is not accurate. Most peoples on this board isn't.

The truth is, you can't judge someones experience based on what they put on their profile.

The bottom line to the initial question remains the same however, if you don't have a degree you are not as competitive as you could be. Having 150 credit hours but still no degree doesn't make you any more competitive than the guy with zero hours. So stop making excuses and get a degree if you wish to compete in this highly competitive market!

BTW, did I mention I flew the Space Shuttle? (maybe that will make some of you numbskulls listen up a little better.)

Slick Billy

I'll catch you on the MilkyWay7 arrival. I'm doing my type ride in the millinium falcon tomorrow. systems are killing me. At least I have a good FO. I like to call him Chewy

Good one Cueboat! LAMO! :D

Very true we got off the track with this thread. On another note I think that most of our profiles are pretty accurate. I just don't see the need for lying about who you are and what your experience level might be.

Props to my peeps. Fly safe, have fun, and sound cool on the radios!

Bill Nelson

Your rationalization that your profile is "of course....not accurate" because "most peoples" isn't either is so lame I can't believe it. You sound like the type who would justify cheating on their taxes because everyone else does. You are sad.

Please don't try to justify your sick attempt to make yourself out to be someone other that who you are by saying that everyone else has falsified their profile.

You have every right to post whatever you want, regardless of your experience or lack there of. You have no right, however, to accuse the rest of the flightinfo community of stooping to your level in an effort to impress others.

Sensei and Falconjet make some good points. The only reason I can think of to lie on one's profile is because some people like to hide behind the anonimity of the internet. I think those on this board with accurate profiles know they can be "found out" and behave more appropriately, while others flame, post names and rip others to shreds and hide behind a false profile.

That would be an interesting way for the webmaster and moderators to keep the peace around here - actually require a true profile.

Well duh! Of course I wouldn't speak as pointedly if everyone knew who I was. That is the beauty of the internet. I don't say things that I wouldn't want to say in person, but the truth is that we can't always speak whats on our minds in person due to the reprocussions.

I have many very strong opinions on many things. Some I speak pointedly about and some I let die. This topic however, is one that people need to know the truth about, so I spoke up. Anyone who is mislead to believe that a degree is not very important is definetly being led down the wrong path.

How would you feel if your son was contemplating PFTing and nobody spoke up to tell him the dangers of doing that? I think most rational people would prefer to have someone "hide behind a false profile" and let him know that many PFTers are looked at no better than SCABS!

Thats all I am doing. Letting these folks with legitimate questions hear legitimate answers, only doing it from the shadows.

BTW Falcondriver,
If you think "most" people profiles are accurate, I've got some ocean front property I would like to sell you.

And English,
If hiding behind the anonimity of the internet is bad, I guess you will be changing your screename from English to your real name? Didn't think so. Nearly everyone on here posts behind a screename as not to be "found out."

Irrelevant point

Bill: You make an irrelevant point. I don't care whether the profiles are or aren't accurate. To justify your making yours up because basically YOU feel 'everyone else does' is YOUR problem, not everybody else's. My profile is 100% truthful, as is everything I have ever posted, and I would give everybody else the benefit of the doubt that there's is truthful as well. Sure, I take everything with a grain of salt, but for the most part people are trying to help inform others with their comments.

YOU may chose to believe (and post) whatever YOU want. Please don't lump me (nor everybody else) into your twisted sense of right and wrong. I can't think of a more cowardly excuse than to say that everybody else does it, so why can't I? It doesn't even work for 2 year olds, why do you think it should get you off the hook?

It is particularly disturbing that you would claim to have a background in the military when (if) in fact you haven't served. What a slap in the face to the true heroes who DO serve and are giving their lives up daily in the service of our country.

You can give your advice and opinions just as anonymously with a truthful profile as you can a fairly tale.

Bring on the ocean front property, I've got loads of cash to unload for somebody who knows everything about every person and their profile on this board.

My profile is completely accurate to........We'll except I may have left out how really good looking I am!!!!

USNFDX isn't baggin' you...like most of us FDX types he's a darn handsome fella. Having that third seat "lounge chair" keeps us fit and sexy even as we fly at 4 a.m.

While we are on it...some guys stay anonymous for safety or for other reasons (i.e...don't want company to know who is out there spreading gouge). Others of us, for business or personal reasons, are less anonymous. I have met a lot of great folks on this forum, including friends of friends, clients, and folks seeking help getting info on starting a military career.

Now...I'm not saying everyone on the board has to reveal their real identity. However, for those of you asking for info...you know who the real dudes are out there. By the same token, don't let the occassional diabtribe or negative comment dissuade you, especially if it from a small minded type who hides behind a screen name and fake credentials. Like the proverbial cartoons which show two middle aged men chatting on a sex chat site, both pretending to be 21 year old women, there are a host of phonies, jerks, and misanthropes who frequent these boards. However, aviation is filled with some awesome people who not only enjoy slipping the surlies, but like to share those expereinces with other folks attempting to do the same thing. Do a threat search and you'll see names like UAL78, Chase, EagleFlip, and a host of others who you can actually meet and get to know if you need some help.

And for what it's worth, I've had several clients who didn't have degrees that are now on the property at jetBlue. Swing for the fences and good luck. PM me if you need contact info...

It ain't that hard to be nice. Jeez...we fly jets for a living, don't we?

Profile??

Maybe I am little biased considering that I am sitting in jail right now but I gotta say that I am not real big on PROFILING these days:D

Johnny

OK, it's very clear that even with a college degree in civil engineering that I that I need to keep my pocket dictionary handy (or the roll of toilet paper with one new word per day) handy to translate Albie's posts (ex: diabtribe and misanthropes) for I am but an unfrozen caveman pilot. Your flying machines frighten and confuse me, but his I do know...Albie speaketh the truth even if I have to look up half of the stuff he writes.

Preach on my brother!

PS yes I've been drinking tonight.
