Southwest plans Mexico codeshare

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines Co (NYSE:LUV - News), the U.S. No. 1 domestic carrier, is to start a codeshare partnership with Mexican airline Volaris, extending the U.S. airline's plan to access international markets.
Southwest, which is in the process of forging a similar partnership with Canada's WestJet Airlines (Toronto:WJA.TO - News), said flight schedules and details of the codeshare would be hammered out by early 2010.
Under a codeshare, airlines can sell tickets on each others' planes, reaching new customers while saving money on marketing.
Dallas-based Southwest, which invented the low-cost airline model 37 years ago, serves only U.S. destinations, but is looking to expand its network even as rivals cut capacity in the face of volatile oil prices.
Volaris, founded in 2006, flies single-aisle Airbus (Paris:EAD.PA - News) jets between 23 cities in Mexico. [SIZE=-2] [/SIZE]
 
This is a joke! WestJet ok but Volaris??? Southwest pilots should be flying this stuff. Shipping jobs south and north of the boarder. Either SWA is in big trouble or they are just shipping jobs away to save a buck. Swapa needs to stand up for its pilots or it will become another worthless airline union. I am starting to think GK is going to just be another one of those worthless airline Ceo's. He made one shrewd move years ago that made him look smart and now he is scared to take anymore risk and risk losing his lofty reputation.

We blaze a trail and learn the ins and outs of int'l flying on someone else's coat-tail, and then do it ourselves. It is VERY expensive to open up a city. I believe it's a cheap way to explore intl ops.
By the way, I am of firm belief that Gary would crash the 737 in the first 1min of flight - he's not a pilot. All pilots would run this company into the ground in the first week if we were CEO. He is doing his job, we are doing ours. He and Herb have NEVER yet given us a reason to believe that they don't have our best interests in mind.
 
Congrats guys! This will be a cash cow. I would think an RJ codeshare thru LGA, JFK or ATL(Critter) would be next.

Well "HE" aint Herb and the Westjet and Voltaris announcements are TWO reasons I don't think Gary gives a rats about you and me brother. You must remember "our" best interests are viewed very differently from the boardroom vs. the cockpit.

Yes I do drink the coolaid. But, pilots can barely manage their finances, why do they think they can run an airline?

HE definetly ain't herb. You and I are completly in agreement here. They are damn near polar opposites. HE dresses up on Halloween, but there are 364 other days that HE can hold a flame to Herb. However, I don't have a reason not to trust HIM yet.

Wow… Let me first say AS is no WN but look what are knuckle head management did. Went into Mexico hard in the late 80’s and now flies more domestic traffic to Mexico then any other airline. Got Etops certified and is now serving every major city in HI with load factors darn near 100%. If our managers can do this then to me that means only one thing you guys are getting screwed because it’s cheaper to use someone else. Don’t confuse Mexico with international or the outsourcing of your jobs with blazing a trail… it isn’t hard not if we did it! But hey sit back relax enjoy the ride its only a 50 seat RJ what will it hurt GK and you guys are family right!

Well at least you are honest about drinking the koolaid, it takes a big man to admit it. As far as finances, speak for yourself. there are those of us out there that are running ours very well thanks....

You mean like with ATA. This is an example of airline management 101. Why would a company as big as SW need to ride on coat-tails to fly to Mexico.?. Flying in mexico is nothing like flying in let's say the Carribean. I don't get this one either.

I would agree with you, but Volaris has no int'l experience. They don't currently fly out of Mexico as far as I know. The press release says they will begin flying to the U.S. next year. I hope we are not going to try to learn int'l ops from them, they don't yet know how to do it. Bottom line, I am very nervous about codeshare, and swapa's willingness to let the company continue to explore more.
 
GK doesn't think you can.

It's pretty tough. That's why only the legacies, military, fractionals, cargo, and regionals can do it. Maybe you guys should talk to the training depts at Mesa and they could show you how it's done.

Uh, yes it does, each section as it is completed is a part of the TA, we therefore had an agreed upon codeshare TA GK is now backing out of, against his promise, so he lied.

It's not about blowing a billion bucks, it's about growing another airlines bottom line at the expense of SWA pilots quality of life, income, growth, upgrade, etc.

Southwest to Partner with Mexican Carrier Volaris 11/10/08

DALLAS (AP) - Southwest Airlines today announced it will sell tickets for travel to Mexico -- beginning in 2010 -- through a deal with Mexican partner Volaris.

Dallas-based Southwest earlier this year reached a similar deal with WestJet Airlines that will allow it to sell travel to Canada late next year.

Volaris was founded in 2006 and serves 23 cities in Mexico.

Both the Volaris and WestJet deals are called code-sharing, in which airlines sell tickets on each other's flights and share the revenue.

Southwest spokeswoman Beth Harbin says Volaris will do all the cross-border flying.

That's similar to the agreement in which WestJet will handle flights to and from Canada, connecting to Southwest flights at U.S. airports served by both airlines.

Harbin says Volaris plans to begin service to the U.S. next year.

I beg to differ on your assessments of the ATA Codeshare "just for the gates".

Does it make sense that SWA spent a few years building the Hawaii codeshare, gaining market share, adding millions to their bottom line with relatively llittle investment, just to throw it all away in the middle of the night...After they already had control of all the ATA gates at MDW?

I don't think so.

Why are the WestJet and Volaris announcements surprising to anyone?

Kelly and Company have stated for years that they would be entering into Canada and Mexico via a codeshare with ATA.

The Klowns at ATA farked it all up and ruined SWA's plans for international codeshare as well as leaving a nice stain on the SWA name by stranding THOUSANDS of good, loyal SWA customers on April 3rd. Do you believe that was part of Kelly's plan to get gates at MDW?

Quite simply SWA is just trying to clean up the ATA mess and they are going ahead with the plans they have had all along, international expansion via codeshare.

I think what they learned from the ATA debacle was that you don't want to have all your eggs in one basket. Hence, WestJet and Volaris codeshare agreements.

Gary blasted this problem all over the media when he announced it yesterday. I hardly think talking about the s#$% sandwich that this codeshare is becoming for us on flightinfo makes a difference.

You need to step away from the KoolAid pitcher and take off your rose colored glasses and see this for what it is.
