That UND landing was great, watching the girls headset come flying off, it was the perfect example of what not to do. And the worst part was she didn't even get disqualified!

Just got home from Smyrna today. Had a great time, but it was a COMPLETE Charlie Foxtrot compared to the last 2 SAFECONs I've been to. I hope KSU will be better next year....especially with the parallel runways (a huge benefit in my book). Congrats to everyone....I just wish we (SIU) could've made it into the top 3 this year....I think we would have if the new scoring system would have been introduced already. Anyone notice the hot chicks from Mt. Sac and Hampton?? :D And no, those are not NIFA-goggles in my opinion! Oh, and is it just me, or did the winner of aircraft rec. cheat???? How in the world do you get 179 out of 180 right? Jeez.....I got 5th, though. :)

Well, I wasnt there this year, but I would guess it was the four-eyed UND dork who sleeps with his rec book.

When we hosted it in MKT 2 falls ago, we were sitting at the table in the hanger between events playing hearts with some SCSU guys (those guys are awesome!). The UND rec guys were sitting at the other end of the table completely ignoring us, on top of the world. They were studying aircraft rec out of their books. Now, this should be a normal sight, right? Well, it flagged us because the rec event was the night prior. WTF? So I passingly called down and said "rec is over boys, come play some cards." Well, in a smug voice one called back "not nationals."

Riiight...

In defense of some at UND, I met a couple cool guys that were real easy to BS with, but the vast majority are so stuck on themselves and their "duty" to UND that they have the reputation they have earned.

179 out of 180 is absurd. I used to think I was a Rec dork, but not anymore....

One of the guys from Lewis (Region VIII w00t) summed it up perfectly (referring to the UND guy) - "That pasty white f**k doesn't know the touch of a woman, or a guy for that matter, only his Jane's book..."

I, for one, had fun slinging the burgers and hotdogs to the people at MQY. It had to have been a funny sight, the Purdue flight team working concessions at the MTSU SAFECON. Good times, see ya'll in Salina next spring.

Pasty White guy got 179 out of 180? He's to Rec what Drago is to Rocky 4........somebody has to beat him. Then again I never got better than 4 th at Nat's.

Heard some of the scoring was messed too....ah Safecon, some things will never change.

The ramp was larger than the friggin' Sahara, and the honey-hut near the hot box was full by Thursday night. One would think a phone call could get some new blue juice in short order.

The whole episode with UND's static wicks was embarrassing for NIFA as a whole. What kind of idiot damages an airplane, even if it were just static wicks. The idea of someone doing it purposely angers me.

Overall I enjoyed the week, but I need a break from NIFA for a while. I think that's the last competition I'll go to for quite some time.

This sounds good. Do explain...

Yeah, what was the deal? We flew in on Sunday instead of Saturday due to weather delays. NIFA wouldn't let us even fly that day due to the vandalism thing! JEEZ!!

I'll explain the static wick thing as best I understand it.

On sunday (only the second day that most teams had been down at MQY and before the competition actually started) someone (Rumors are UND, but as far as I know, this hasn't been proven) claimed that their airplanes had been vandalized. The static wicks were cut and there was allegedly a dent in the fuselage that looked "like someone had kicked it." At any rate, NIFA grounded all the airplanes from every school until each team certified that its airplanes were airworthy. Some schools actually sent mechanics down to check their airplanes, others just sent team members to preflight the planes. At any rate, if someone actually did vandalize another school's airplanes, they have no place in aviation. If this was just a case of someone just performing an overzealous preflight and thinking it would be funny to claim sabotage, screw you for robbing from the rest of us a day of flying. You might not have a place in aviation either.

On a related note, someone said that UND has its warriors on an MEL and that static wicks aren't included on the MEL so that's why they grounded their airplanes. Is this true?

P.S. I took that air rec (wreck) test. Anyone who gets 179 out of 180 on that thing will probably die a virgin.

man this is a blast from the past.
was alot of fun when i did it. can't imagine what its like now however the same schools are doing the same things it seems. at the nats i remember running into several of the UND team and they avoided us (da mules) and anyone else like the plague. was fun tho beating the snot out of the airforce academy like step children. and all by 12 guys from an underfunded school. FU AF!

Aparently they were then known for having specific people that compete ONLY on ONE event and thats it. so if youre doing the e6B event, you only study the E6B and get locked in the closet with that thing. you fine tune it with 2in1 oil so it spins freely, you check the torques on the plate screws so its friction is how you like it.....you get the picture. everyone was like that and there was no socializing at all allowed for them. i guess their coaches were afraid of getting their students kung fu messed up.

its funny how the most unsafe flying youll ever do goes on during those SAFECON events. just to get that perfect landing. just to get that perfect fuel burn. etc.

96-97 was great for me. go mules. and rock on K-state! I gotta support my neighbors too!

Apparently I didnt get the memo on that one.

Im Broke B!t@H, Im Broke.

Anyone else member when UND's crashing...I mean flying team showed just how strong piper products are back in 2001 when they beutifully demonstrated a power off stall at 150'. Good thing it was a SAFEcon competition.

FUND

LOL I remember that....the piper was about 300 feet from the line about 200 feet in the air. The plane stalled and landed/crashed short of the box. The plane hit so hard the pilots headsets flew off. The worst part was that there was no inspection and the plane went right back around for another flight.
