Skybus starts with $10 air fares on May 22

NEW YORK, April 24 (Reuters) - Skybus Airlines Inc., a new U.S. budget carrier, on Tuesday said it will start flying on May 22 with $10 one-way tickets available on all flights.

"Beginning today, passengers can buy airline tickets for less than the cost of a tank of gas," Skybus CEO Bill Diffenderffer said in a statement.
The launch of the new low-cost carrier, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, could pressure established carriers like AMR Corp's (AMR.N: Quote, Profile , Research) American Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc. (DALRQ.PK: Quote, Profile , Research).
Skybus, which plans to acquire more than 70 aircraft over the next five years, hopes to be able to undercut rivals by selling advertising space inside and outside its planes and charging for priority seating and checking bags.

It keeps costs down by only taking reservations over the Internet and not staffing a call center.
The start-up carrier, which has raised $160 million from investors, will have at least 10 seats available for $10 on its flights through Dec. 15. The $10 tickets don't include taxes and fees.
Last-minute fares run as high as $330, spokesman Bob Tenenbaum said.
Skybus plans to fly initially from Columbus to Burbank, California; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; Richmond, Virginia; and Kansas City, Missouri.
On May 29, it plans to add service to Bellingham, Washington; Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and Fort Lauderdale.
In June, Skybus plans to begin flying to Oakland, California.

huh???

I almost blew a nut laughing at this......

In order to keep wages in line with their projected low fares, flight attendants will only be paid $9 per flight hour, and will not be paid per diem. While this is considerably lower than competing airlines' wages, flight attendants will also receive 10% of all sales made during the flight, splitting all commissions evenly among all flight attendants on-board. Starting pilot wages will also be well below average, starting at $65,000 annually

The Skybus Rules of Flying

On Skybus, you pay only for what you check. The first two bags are 5 bucks apiece. After that, it’s $50 a bag (yeah, so pack smartly).

Hungry? Thirsty? Bring cash.
Most people love our full cocktail bar and food menu, but if you’re not into that, it won’t cost you a penny. Why should your ticket cost include your neighbor’s dinner? That also goes for blankets and pillows–which, by the way, you get to keep if you buy. Oh, and don’t sneak food onboard unless you brought enough for the whole plane

Don’t call us.
We don’t have a phone number. Seriously. We’d love to chat, but those phone banks are expensive.

Yeah, we’ve got preferred seats. Sort of.
There are no fancy reclining beds onboard, but you can pay 10 bucks extra to board our brand-new A319 airplanes before anyone else.

I was going to apply just so I can give them $hit when they call me.

What a joke. I hope they don't stick around......PLEASE GOD....I hope they don't stick around.

so fa's make about $9000/year plus some pathetic commission and CA's start out at 65,000/year. I hope this piece of Sh#t airline goes down in flames. I for one don't think anybody willing to sit in the left seat of an Airbus for 65k deserves jumpseat privelages, period. The bottom feaders who accept these jobs better not plan on commuting.

Looks like someone has photocopied a few pages out of the eurotrash airline Ryanair's book. The only faith I have is that there will not be enough O/D (origination / destination) to sustain this craphole-blackeye to the true professionals who try to still make a career out this industry.

My advice to prospective pilots for this outfit. I'd move to Columbus. I doubt you'd get many jumpseats to CMH. I'd also rent in Columbus, with a provision in the contract for early lease termination.

cheaper than the real bus.........

"Ladies and Gentlemen, we have experienced a breakdown on our bus and are expecting lenghthy delays. To accommodate our passengers, we have re-booked your passage on Skybus and will refund the fare difference as well. Once again we apologize for the inconvience, and thanks for going Greyhound!"

Well, just wait until this winter (if they last that long), when the first snow/ice storm hits CMH; with almost NO Cust. Serv. agents, NO Resv. agents, they will make JB Valentine's Day experience 'look like a picnic'

Strange thing about this business is that the people who pay the least ($10 or $20 for a ticket), will bit*h the most. Who knows they may even riot and tare down the terminal and then it will be all over with :)

And, as a side note, I don't think you have to worry about the 'scum bag' pilots who work for this $hit bag outfit begging for a JS to commute; as they said all along that they are going to schedule everything as 'out and backs' because they are simply tooooo cheap to even pay for a hotel for their crews. And, I wouldn't let them on a jumpseat anyway, "just something about having someone that 'stupid' on my airplane (or in my profession, for that matter)."

Just my $0.02, for what's it worth.

I like how they show Seattle and Vancouver as destinations but its going to be Bellingham, WA. Hell the line at the border will take longer than the flight!

Dang!

I see that they have a top notch educational system in Columbus. Does anyone in Columbus know how to use a spellchecker before issuing press releases?

Nope, they are all OSU fans (rednecks). That right there explains their intelliegence level.

156 Seats

Easyjet has 156 seats on their 319s. To accomplish that, they install two extra overwing emergency exits (like the 320) and remove one of the galleys.
I assume SkyBuzz is going for the same option. However, the pictures I have seen are of a leased Virgin America 319.
My 319 only has 122 seats....

ALPA needs to censure these pilots for life. Work for a dirtbag outfit like Skybus, never get hired by a Major. Simple.

Enough of this tearing down what we professionals spend so many years building.

We must insist our hiring depts refuse these pilots should they ever interview. The message must be sent loud and clear to these PPTs (Pilot Profession Terrorists).

It's all about supply and demand, less about profit. India is proving right now, despite what the pilots make, and airplane can still be profitable. They pay captains $11,000 a month, because there simply aren't any pilots left in India to hire, yet they still make money charging cheap fares.

These Skybus captains don't HAVE TO WORK for $65K to make the company successful. But of course their not intelligent enough to figure that out.

i thought defintion of a major was one billion in gross revenue... i guess they are a startup. that is probably more accurate. they're no different than a startup flying cessna 402s out of cape cod. a startup is a startup is a startup...

The more things change the more they stay the same. An RJ guy continuing an age old routine of talking out his A$$!!! Why can't we all just get along?

Pot meet kettle...

Looks like someone has photocopied a few pages out of the eurotrash airline Ryanair's book.

It might be Eurotrash, but Ryanair has some of the highest payscales for narrowbody pilots in europe. Starting Pay for Captains is $120K, 5th year F/Os make $140K and 5th year Captains over $200K. And they are home every night, no communiting, guaranteed.

Clever management like Ryanair's apparently values motivated cockpit personell. How clever Skybitch's management team remains to be seen, looks like they forgot to copy a few important pages...

Cheers,

You really need to do some more research on Ryan Air. Ryan has some of the worst labor practices in the airline industry worldwide. Michael O'Leary has fired pilots for charging their cell phones at work because they are "stealing his electricity." Pilots don't get water out of the galley unless they pay for it. Numerous pilots have been fired for just talking about a union.

Michael O'Leary pays his pilots very well for one reason only: it's the only way he can get people to put up with the rest of the bull$hit that he pulls.

Looks like your "research" is mainly from pprune. O'Leary is very good at his job, which is generating buzz for his airline.

Isn't that the case in any Job? My friends at Ryanair are very happy there. Oh, and they don't mind to buy their own water from their fat paychecks. ;)

The CMH market didn't work for either TWA or AWA. I know this is just a couple of Airbii, but I really don't see this working too well. Not enough capitalization. Even if their load factors are full, let's do the math:

156 X 10 = $1560 dollars for a single leg. That won't even buy fuel for the A319. While I'm aware they don't intend to sell all their seats at such a fare, there is simply no way they're gonna be able to go into a thin market and make anything resembling money.

As far as you FlyI Airbus folks that are populating their cockpits, come on fella's...Continental, UPS, FDX, AAI, SWA, B6 and others are hiring. Have some respect for yourself. Even if Skybus takes off, your career earnings at any of the above listed airlines will be much better.

Nope, my research is from IFALPA which has been receiving complaints and requests for help from countless Ryan Air pilots for years.

O'Leary is very good at his job, which is generating buzz for his airline.

O'Leary is a worthless sack of $(%^ that treats all people, not just his employees, like nothing but cattle. Are you aware that O'Leary instituted a policy not to take any disabled passengers because they were slowing the boarding process and costing him time and money? A few lawsuits that he had to settle ended that policy, but it shows just what sort scum he really is.

Oh, and they don't mind to buy their own water from their fat paychecks. ;)

I can't believe an air line pilot would actually try to justify this. Buying water while working!?! Come on, you have more self-respect than that.
