I've had Ecco shoes for several years now that were very comfortable and had no metal in them so I could leave them on going through security. My wife got me a new pair of Ecco's and I just assumed that they were airport friendly too and wore them to work. Sure enough, when I go through the metal detector it goes off. The new shoes have a metal shank now!!

Does anyone know if you can remove the metal and replace the shank. If so, can any shoe guy do it or is there a company doing this.

What MORE will you put up with just to wear a funny hat?

( Ralph Kramden had nearly the same hat...BTW. That is where most of you are going....A Bus Driver, with appropriate Self-Esteem and Wages, just so you can tell unsuspecting Fools that you are an " Airline Pilot". )

Wouldn't it be easier to just return the shoes?

In the early 90's I bought shoes with out thinking about metal. I never made that mistake again.

I'm weird, but I like dress boots. I wore Florsheim zip up dress boots for years before I retired. Now I just wear Sperry Topsiders!
 
Shoes

I've used "Deer Stags" from Penney's for years now and they remain steel shank free. They're comfortable and comparatively inexpensive.
 
yep on the deer stags. 34 bucks at off broadway shoes. I could play tennis in them; they are very comfortable

Hey TWE go to the shoe repair shop, I think they got one up near the airport. They will take out the metal shanks and put in fiberglass ones for like 35-45 bucks. Eccos are worth it I would spend the money cause they last twice as long as stags.
 
I always thought the same thing about the Stags, but I ventured out a bit and tried a new style and they have SHANKS! So not all Deerstags are airport friendly.
 
A shoemaker can remove the shank in about 2 or 3 minutes. I had the shank removed from my Eccos, and he said that good shoes don't really need a shank, and if he could just keep the steel shank to use for a rebuild of a shoe for somebody else, I didn't even have to pay him.

That was over three years ago, and these Eccos are still going strong.

You could probably pull the shank out yourself. All it takes is a razor knife and some needle nosed pliers . . . remove the insole, and then make a left-to right incision over the shank (they are just a narrow strip of steel, maybe 4 inches long by 3/4 inch wide).

Take the money you save, and treat an FO to a couple of cold frosty beverages on your next layover.
 
My new Ecco's only go off in Amarillo. They've got that thing tuned soo hot it could melt my fillings. Every other city we go to, the shoes don't set the metal detector off.
 
Rockport makes a whole range of shoes that have composite shanks, that are airport friendly and for us First Officers (and RJ Captains) are waterproof. They are nearly as light as my running shoes and wear like tennis shoes.
 
There is not a market for Airport friendly shoes. Try Zappos.com There is a section on airport friendly shoes. I have always had good success with these.
