It depends more on your qualifications than anything else. If I remember correctly, you need 2000TT and an ATP to upgrade, so if you start with 1000 hours, at 250 hours/year it's going to take a while.

On the other hand, some people have been hired directly as PIC in that program. I think they are fully staffed right now (PICs anyway), but some turnover is common.

This is all based on my somewhat fuzzy memory, so I could be wrong on any or all of the above.

I've known a few of the instructors at Hillsboro Aviation that did/do the air ambulance thing for Aero Air while instructing, but once they get an airline gig they leave......
 
What is so bad about the charter side of things does it depend on the owner?And I could imagine why they would leave if they were only getting 250 hours a year.

Like any organization whether it be TAG, The Air Group ect, it always depends on the owner. Some owners treat their pilots great while others treat them like dogs.

I live in Texas and have been up to PDX several times over the last year or so looking also.
The Falcon 2000 in Salem has been the same guys for years. There is a Citation 2 on 135 charter that does approx one flight a month, not hiring. A Beechjet, same story same captain there for years. I went to Eugene. The Chief pilot for Pape Group wouldn't even talk to me or take my resume (PPiva), I took that to mean they were not hiring. There is several more citations and things in EUG but they are on the other side of the fence, and hard to get to. A G-4, several citations, Astra, etc. Couldn't even get a bite from anyone.
