Urgent pilot Report

OMA UA /OV OVR/TM 0000/FL030/TP BE58/Lrjtcaptain watchout! there is a crap load of ice in the clouds today, for further wx info contact flightwatch on 123.45.

There is only one way to get a corporate job with 500 TT
1. you own the company and the airplane.
2. Your daddy owns the company and the airplane

If neither, please enlighten us so that we can all get jobs.

PIREPs

I had a very good friend who was an FSS specialist for years in Billings and Prescott and an FSS instructor at the Monroney Center in OKC. She always advocated submission of pireps. She told us that even if nothing went on during your flight, submit it as a pirep. Any pirep is helpful.

Of course, if something's happening in flight you should submit a pirep. I remember one time we were on a normal training flight west of VRB. We spotted a funnel cloud and reported it. If you're going to submit the usual garden variety pirep, e.g. the "nothing is going on" type I wrote about above, you can wait til you land.

If you are currently handling a situation that includes a bunch of ice, no one expects you to change frequencies (during a crisis) to report a PIREP.

If you are busy at that time, a report 10 minutes later or as Bobby said, when on the ground, won't hurt a bit.

Listen, im gonna appologize if i pissed anyone off here. All i said was that why is it everytime i fly there are never any credible pireps. That was all.

My point is, is that im a low time pilot flying 20+ hours a week as PIC in a light twin. I dont depend on pireps or fss for wx but im just saying its nice to have all the available info. I hear 10+ flights at the same alt as i am so reality suggests that there have been more there before i took off. Why cant we call FSS and say hey, im picking up a little ice, or its bumpy. Just seems like i look at the wx. No airmets. Yea, visible moisture.....time to watch the wings close but all i was requesting was that everyone submit. I don't hide behind them as a means of informing me of whats going on. i just like to get a true observation by another pilot who has flown through the area recently.

As for your attacks on me about the baron, im not affraid of the ice, i usually stear clear of it......And when i say im bored, it gets old flying 20-30 hours a week by myself.....wish i had somehting bigger and faster with someone in the left or right seat. Last week i did 34 hours in 6 days, all under 91, those are long days....PIC by myself....just gets a little old.....so stop the flames....this thread was not supposed to start a fight......

It bothers me that you get bored flying a Baron. It bothers me that you aren't scared of ice. It bothers me that your flying 30 hours a week in weather but don't know what kinds of weather produce icing conditions. The picture of you flying the Cessna 310 bothers me on your web site. http://hometown.aol.com/skyboy232/index.html Then go under MeetMark. It doesn't look right. If you say that you respect ice but it doesn't scare you then that bothers me as well. In fact people who say they have never been afraid of the weather bother me. Especially when they say this when I'm sitting in the right seat and we are already off the ground and heading into bad weather. I just get a really "bothered" feeling about all of this. So tell us... Whats the real deal here?

ice doesn't bother me because i don't fly into it period. When i encounter ice, i either turn, land, or climb. depending on what is the best bet. I don't trust my known icing enough to fly throught but its a little added security and can buy me some time before im screwed. as for the 310 that im flying, what does that have to do with anything????

and why does me fly8ing 30 hours a week bother you. I never fly through **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**ty wx, im not an idiot

I was borrowing Learjet Baron Captains phraseology. When I say fear I don't mean shaking in your seat I mean a respect that goes well beyond your ego. I haven't seen that in many pilots. I am sure that is due to my low experience level and that most if not all pilots are filled to the brim with humility.

Is a Baron even certified for flight into known icing?

Someone may have mentioned this dude but if the temp is less than 10c and there is visible moisture (i.e. cloud) you will get ice. And yes it even happens in Florida during the summer out of about 14k if the conditions are right. You dont need a Pirep to sort this out.

If you get a winds aloft forecast it has the temps on it. When you see 0 C thats your freezing level. Stay below it and you should be ok. During winter in most parts of the US it goes down to the ground so it may not matter. If your aircraft is not certified for known ice and doesnt have boots, TKS, whatever stay out of the clouds when the temp is less than 10 c.

Pireps are from a time in aviation when computers, internet, duats, and all that neat stuff you can use at the FBO ever came about. Back when radar didnt even exist and the best wx info came from pilots that flew the route ahead. These days real time wx info makes pireps less necessary. That being said a forecast is a forecast not a guarantee. Even a pirep is useless after 15 minutes.

Pick up a good aviation wx book and learn about wx. A knowledgeable pilot will know when to expect turbulence, icing, etc by using simple weather info from FSS like the synopsis, temp, winds, etc. If you need someone to tell you when its ok or not ok to fly you need to hit the books a little harder.

Pireps are always welcomed... by every position are PIREP forms... we write out any info that is passed by the pilot and then it is sent down to the Wx office. The Wx office then enters the data into computers and as far as I know that info is available to FSS as soon as it is entered. (though I can't swear to that :D )

If we continue to see A/C asking for altitude changes, deviations, etc. at a particualr location we'll write it up on our own.

my baron is certified for flight into known ice but i never rely on my boots and all my other anti ice/deice **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** to work. There is never a trip that important. And i know when to expect ice. Its just nice to get a UA stating severe mixed, or light trace, or moderate rime.....something of that nature.....of course i understand visiable moisture and temps are critical. I know where to expect turbulance. Its just nice to get a report from someone who has just gone through it. Severe turbulance reported by a 757 would probably keep me on the ground if i read it. Just basic stuff like that.

Anyways, didn't want to offend anyone. We are all supposed to be friends here. We are adults. Why does it seem everyone has to up eachother each time.

And why does anyone care if a baron bores me? It's just not that much fun flying some of the pricks that i fly.

You ungratefull whacko! If you can't deal with one or two weirdo's what are you going to do when you get 20? Tell daddy you want a job where you draw a check and never leave the house.

I picked up some trace ice out of 8,500' coming out JAC last week. Just thought you should know dude.

How's this for a pirep?

PIREP 03:58Z 12/22/02
BWG UUA /OV BWG/TM 0358/FL050/TP P34R/TB CONT MOD-SEV TB 030-050/RM GETTING THE SNOT BEAT OUT OF ME

Thats a nice descriptive remark - or at least a mental image I'd rather not have :)

i've flown a baron into known icing, seen my airspeed drop to 130 and still been fine.... there is nothing to be scared of when your in icing with a Baron... its probably one of the best performers in icing. You dont like it, climb out of it... Baron can fly at 10,000ft.

Heeeeeeeey

Hey, Lr

Is being mentally unstable holding you back any?

Just wondering...............................

you are all pissing me off, i dont' depend of FSS for WX, they give me the standard and thats fine. I listen, i look at all the charts and **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**. If you **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**ing understood where im coming from then that would be fine but you all are just acting like you are all just the **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**

alrighty guys....enough.
mentaly unstable......I am semi mentaly unstable. :-)

the baron does perform well in the ice. I just look at the wx, know there will be ice.....but never know what kinds of accumulation to expect. as in should i file for a lower alt or higher, am i going to be able too shoot through the layer or no. I just like to read the pireps because its a great way of knowing what to expect. OUr WX centers aren't the greatest but they do.

I just make it a point to submit everyflight.....
