i like mega too but i can't agree with her stance here either. the award should be equal to the damage, and the damage was/is likely the guys career. in this buisness it is possible to chase the dream to millions and if a company wrongs you to the extent that it is impossible to see that dream through well you should see a payday.

the example of passengers on an airplane suing for millions isn't the same thing, because someone with a bump or just having been scared won't really limit them in terms of their capablity moving forward in time with careers etc. and so a large reward is inappropriate. Obviously a death is something else so no needs to slam that back in my face.

Whoa Kitty,

Calm down little *************************.

Firstly, I am not French but being referred to as a 'frog' reveals your that I am dealing with a lower intelligence and/or a racist.

First of all the term "frog" is not a racist statement. I guess you dont even know what the term racism implies. Being a "frog" does not state nor imply skin color or ethnic heritage.

Secondly, when I got my LR-60 type my partner was a French Citizen. He flew for the French Navy and spent over 25 years there. He hated the French and only went back when he had to. He told me point blank that France has a terrible time with racism. They are one of the biggest racist nations out there. Again, this is not coming from me but from a French national.

And lastly if you are not a frog then why do spend so much time defending that piece of crap country?

Secondly, the CIA Factbook is published by the Central Intelligence Agency and is available in your local library (find a map' it's usually a big building in town)

Thanks, it's also on the internet and I found the info. Too bad you are wrong with the USA numbers. The literacy rate is 97% in the USA. With the sampling of that many people there would easily be a 5%+/- chance of error. So, statistically the rates of literacy in the USA and France are neck and neck. You have nothing to brag about here junior.

G21Agoose said:
Lastly, to make the math simple 5% of 296 million = 14.8 million (US)1% of 61 million = 610,000.

Like I said before you percentages were wrong from the get go. 95% is not an accurate number.

G21Agoose said:
But you fail to understand you still have more illiterates PER CAPITA. UNDERSTAND?

Of course we do you moron because we have more people living here. Thats what PER CAPITA means. All PER CAPITA is is a head count. When you have more people you will have more cases of illiteracy. You still dont know what the hell you are talking about.

Statistically, the US and France have a neck and neck rate of literacy. Sorry but you are going to have to find a different topic to bash the USA with.

Why dont you talk about the rediculous rates of unemployment in France or the rediculous high taxes?

This is perhaps the dumbest defense I have ever heard. "Becuase with having 4/5ths more people and exposure to illiteracy the USA would have a greater chance of having more illiterate people. As a whole and as a percentage" A percentage is just that. Having more people doesn't mean your percentage changes. And throwing out ethnic slurs!!?? That's a smart argument. You're stupid because you're French? Everyone knows the French are stupid because they choose to not bathe, chain smoke, and elect socialists.

Calling someone a frog is not an ethnic slur. Where you got that is beyond me.

I am not going to argue statistics with you. You obviously dont get it.

Sorry,

But jury awards are out of control and IT DOES affect us all- these awards are passed down to us in the long run.
So how does reducing jury awards prevent corporations, governments and individuals from acting negligently?

Negligent acts create the losses. Put the horse in front of the carriage.

Yeah, but they can only read French. What good is that?
You got a point, but at least they translate the MOM's so that you can read them and get your job done.

IF........IF the guy's career is truly over....then MAYBE he may deserve (I am going to say the word that makes me seriously want to vomit) COMPENSATION. I am just so disgusted by the many frivolous lawsuits that I just hear the word "sue", "lawyer", "compensation", etc. and my blood pressure goes up. Everything I have I have worked my a$$ off for. I was not given anything nor do I have the desire to be just given something. I am truly sickened by people's sense of entitlement these days and lack of accountability. It also extremely disturbs me that someone would become a millionaire because unfortunately something $hitty happened to them. I do feel that a lot of juries award amounts of money that are excessive. Of course, every situation is different and I am not necessarily talking about this case in particular.....just overall, I find it all truly sad, out of control and disturbing. In the end, thanks to these people that get rich (lawyers, plaintiffs, etc), all of us pay (increased insurance rates, etc, etc.). Now, after all of that jibber jabber, if you all don't understand my outlook on this, I am not explaining myself further because you just won't understand no matter what I say.

I agree with this assessment. I think frivolous lawsuits are just that. When someone spills hot coffee in their lap and the courts find the resturant who served it responsible, well that just undermines the whole system.

However, in this case, the award wasn't to make the pilot rich. It was meant to send a message to NAA that what they did was unacceptable and that there are consequences. If the award was small, then NAA will just chalk it up to the cost of doing business and continue to run things how they did. This award will make them reevaluate (in theory) and hopefully change for the better.

Yeah, sour grapes. I am jealous because I really want to be part of the me me me, everyone owes me, I am not accountable for anything, it's never my fault, I should be rich for nothing crowd.
I suppose some of us support this verdict because we see it as SOME restoration of Captain's authority. I think it sux that we are forced to resort to lawyers to restore Captain's authority, but if this company is not only flying unairworthy airplanes, but is brazen enough to fire ppl over it then they need to be stopped.
Everytime someone has something $hitty happen to them thinks they are "entitled" to "compensation". If that is the case, I wish I could get fired.

I guess all the passengers on the SWA flight that crashed should be millionaires too, huh?

We won't know the score on that until the NTSB is done (thanks for bringing it up though), but if we are found negligent in some way, we'll be paying through the nose. What North American is accued of is not just negligent, it is criminal. On top of that they are accused of firing somone with the guts to try to stand up to them - I'd call that extortion.

Management needs to be held accountable too.

I've only got one thing to say...Capt. Megamouth, you're a tool.

She may be a tool.....but at least she's OUR tool. What would Flt Info be without our dear beloved "Captain's" thought provoking and witty insights...

Seriously, though..... Happy New Year Megadeth!!
