That's why they crash airplanes and kill a couple of hundred people every few years.

P.S. To answer your original question: No Southwest won't hire you with 0 PIC turbine. Why should they.

That's just uncool.

Jackass.

what is qualified?? Why is a 10yr. experienced pilot from Usair who is furloughed with 10,000 TT with 4500 hours in the 737 as an FO not qualified to apply at SWA who does not have 1000 PIC Turbine but has plenty of PIC time Total. I think SWA would hire the same quality of pilot from there interview process and recommendations whether they had 1000 PIC turbine or not. getting 1000 PIC turbine doesnt all of a sudden make you a Super pilot. I think its more of a way for SWA to get a lower rate for crew insurance?? at least this is from i have heard.

i think they are qualified but YOU COULD argue that having time in the left seat builds a way of thinking toward leadership decisions that then carries over to when you move back to the right seat. in effect you still think like a captain as a first officer. while many guys can learn and develop this attitude without actually practicing it from the left seat, some can't and need that experience of being the final line in the sand. SWA and MOST OTHER MAJORS like to know that all their pilots have had this opportunity to be PIC of a turbine aircraft because i think they believe it changes you for the better as a pilot forever.

Well the funny thing is that America West does NOT have a pic turbine requirement....Pot calling the kettle black

Just piling on to what a jackass Cactus is.

If SWA only considered 121 Turbine PIC, then you could at least make a rational argument for the requirement.

But if it is true that they will consider 1000 PIC in a Caravan, but will not consider a furloughed USAir Pilot with thousands of hours in the 737, you have what might be called an IDITIOC REQUIREMENT.

And one that is highly insulting to those high-time USAir furloughees.

Even 1000 PIC in a Caravan? I think that if they want the requirement to hold water, you would need to say that Single engine turboprop PIC, and Maybe even part 91 turbine PIC does not count.

I think a high-time 737 FO would be able to kick the freakin' a$$ off of a lower-time Caravan "captain", so-called PIC time notwithstanding.

And yet, I personally know pilots at almost all of the majors who did not have any PIC turbine.

The requirement is what it is, but it is hard to argue that it is not arbitrary.

Airtran's requirement is a LOT more logical - 500 121 PIC.

Now 500 121 PIC proves a whole lot more about your ability to perform as a 121 pilot.

Gotta hate those iditioc requirements... :)

Yeah 100LL, my time shouldn't count, it's only thousands of hours flying all over the world in Gulfstreams and Hawkers, all as a Part 91 PIC. So please enlighten me as to how "500 hours as 121 PIC proves a whole lot more about your ability to perform as a 121 pilot". Funny, just starting my first line next week at Fedex, which last time I checked, was a 121 carrier.

Here's a tip, go to Jack Brown's seaplane base in FL and get yourself a seaplane rating, so that you can land in the river you're crying.

I don't think any of us will ever unlock the secret to getting an interview, at any major carrier. My assumption is that they would like a broad spectrum of experience from throughout the industry, whether it be 121, corporate, air taxi, or military, as well as young and older. Hey, they hired me, and I am just an airplane driver like the rest of you.......albeit a very happy one!

Cactus, here's a newsflash for you ... your airline hired quite a few new pilots with 0 PIC turbine hours. I know, because I was one of the B737 new-hires during that period of time. I was there for a few years and then moved on to another position. I don't remember any planes crashing, do you?

Why don't you think before typing stupid remarks like this? Or are you that closed-minded Captain? I think the reason planes crash is because guys like you are commanding the jet.

Its not what you know, its who you know or who's your daddy thats sometimes helps you get a job like you see in every profession. As far as having a hard line 1000 PIC turbine min to get an interview at Southwest is great for the pilots that are at regionals that are upgrading but bad for the pilots that want to apply there but cant due to lack of upgrade opportunities at the airline they are at and having to wait for how many months years to upgrade. Southwest is misssing out on alot of great pilots that have great expereince.. jet, previous 121 exp..etc that cant even apply cuase of that min.

Fricking crybaby! WHAHHHH!!! who cares? They have minimums for a reason. Put your time in and shut your pie hole. You sound like a Gulfstream guy. There are always people out there who don't want to pay there dues. Well guess what?? I was that no time, right seat guy. I paid my dues, upgraded, paid them some more, finally got the mins, applied at a major, and got hired. It took a long time but that's the way it goes. If you are looking for a quick route the the majors....get another career.

You can sit in the right seat of any airplane for tens of thousands of hours and never develope "Command Ability" which is what I believe they are looking for. In the left seat of a Caravan you have to do the thinking and decision making, that is "not necessarily" the case in the right seat.

First off Cactus's post is not worth repling too.

Second, SWA can set whatever Mins they want. Does the PIC requirement mean they are getting better pilots, who knows? If you're in the right seat or the left seat and flying Part 121 you're a pretty sharp pilot either way.

The fact is they have thousands of pilots to choose from with B737 types and a lot of PIC time.

He does have a point. Twice in Denver this year they have had some real close calls. In a way I guess AA is doing a good job because in the two Denver cases they technically did end up on the runway for at least a portion of the landing.

1000 ain't gonna cut it.

From a SWA crew in the hotel shuttle. They have 2 stacks of resumes. One stack has over 8000 resumes that meet the minimums. The other stack has roughly 2000 resumes that have the following...a college degree, 2000+ PIC turbine, and a type rating. There was a fourth item. I believe it was internal reccomendation, but it slips my mind right now...guess which pile they are recruiting from. Take it for what it's worth.

Very classy there, Frontier. Nothing like ripping on an airline's run of bad luck - of which every airline has had, or will have.

The two of you make a great pair. I'll make sure I keep my mouth shut if Frontier dicks one up.
