I tried being one but then someone reminded me that I wasn't the Chief. If you really have 10,000 hrs and are just running into your first then you're a lucky guy.

I am just curious about some of the experiences. Wierdness, obnoxiousness, etc. Want to compare to see if there is a trend.

I am a chief now, but I refuse to use that term. Only for FAA and insurance purposes. I will not ask our other pilot ( co-pilot ) to do anything I would not do. If he washes the airplane, I go help! We are a small (1 airplane, 2 pilot ) operation. I despise 2 pilot operations where one is the CHIEF and the other does all the work ! Ridiculous !

I have had several corporate jobs. I have not had a Chief Pilot I wouldn't go back to work for.

I once worked (very briefly) at a tiny part 91 outfit with a "chief pilot" (and two "non chiefs" I wasn't doing a lot of flying, and the company had decided to move their office. The chief pilot asked me to help him move the office. On the day decided, I had rented the truck, and showed up, and he didn't show. I called him up and he said he had other stuff to do and wasn't coming in, I had to do it myself. Keep in mind we're talking moving heavy furniture down flights of stairs. There's just no way.

So, taking the initiative, called one of my buddies to help me out. Beer and pizza as incentive. I still felt bad about it. Beer and pizza moves are for your personal stuff, not work stuff. But I had no other option. So we get all the stuff moved. I submit the beer and pizza receipt, and company refuses to pay...

In a word, YES.

However, that was back in the good old days (that really were not that good).

One chief pilot never, repeat never, told any of the pilots about a trip until the day of the trip no matter how long it had been planned, or long you would be out of town.

Another chief pilot would not show up in the cockpit until the baggage was loaded, all the passengers were on board and the pre-start checklist was done. I quit this job and a year later I was hired to replace him and ran the flight department for 20 years until the company was bought out.

Then I went to work for the United States Marshal Service Air Operations Division flying 727s.

Now that is whole different subject.

Yes. This guy will never suffer from hemoroids - he is truely the perfect... One of the more memorable quotes: "There is enough margin built into the performance charts so that you can safely ignore them."

The guy practiced what he preached - he landed one of the airplanes 5,000 lbs over max landing weight and bent things up so badly the airplane had to be ferried back to the factory so that they could put it in the jigs. (The factory happens to be in a country on the other side of the Atlantic. ) He was in the front seat when a contract pilot one of our brand-new jets into a chain link fence. On one of his last flights for the company I understand that he landed "a little hot" at Carlsbad (KCRQ) and nearly ran it off of the end of the runway. It scared the you know what out of the poor guy in the right seat.

All this from the guy who "adjusted" the W&B and BOW on the company aircraft to allow them to fly with full fuel and full passengers, baggage, etc. (See the above quotation.)

Those aren't even the good stories. After running off 8 or 9 pilots over a 5 year period, (not all of our pilots were willing to play his games) upper management finally figured out what was going on what was going on and canned him.

I worked (!) at a place that went through 26 pilots in a 9-year period. We're talking a 3-airplane operation. The CP had been a CFI when brought on board, never flew corporate, freight, etc. Nothing wrong with that, but he had no depth - in anything. Very weak manager, and a twitchy pilot. We carried multiple ASRS forms when flying with him. He would bust an altitude at least once per leg - many times on purpose. This at a F500 corporation. I couldn't take it beyond a year, went back to 135.

I had a friend who worked for a lagre chain FBO out of Addison Texas. I'm sure some MillionAir owned the place, but I dont want to say the name of the FBO. He flew Falcon 20s and Hawkers for them, but he is at CAL now. He told me about the GEM of a CP that still works there. A real loser.

Has an accident on his record so he is stuck and can;t move on
Got the ulgliest F/A (a real mutt) working for the company knocked up (Sleeping with the employess you oversee; now that's a real professional)
Married her (oh, that'll last!!)

But what really takes the cake is that he keeps applying for the D/O position and keeps getting turned down and then says he really didnt want the job in the 1st place.
Not to mention the 1 time I met him on a trip to SEA, getting showered by his dandruff was a little more than I could handle.......

The problem is with management when they never realize that the chief is the problem not the indian. Many companies have lost good employees because people have been put into a management position without any proper training in people skills.

Never dealt with him except to quit...but he was famous for calling guys about issues and if they didn't see things his way he's launch into his "son, do it or your fired, you can just send your manuals, ID, Wings and Hat Brass back to Headquarters" speech. An idiot? He gets my vote.

The " Boss" I flew with won the King A-Hole, and Crazy individual award, this guy I worked with takes the cake..............Too many stories to pass along, it would take days of typing.........

He had mental issues, among everyother issue known to man!!! I had enough, and escaped with my sanity and life!!!!

I may have to write a book or make a movie about my times.........

had a chief who took his GF on charters, took the company plane for personal trips and billed them as training flights and alienated most of the other pilots, especially CFIs. ran the business into the ground got laid off and continued to hang around for six months.

Well, since most pilots, NOT ALL OF THEM, are azzholes who think they're special because they fly planes, the ones that make it to be Cheif Pilot usually turn into the KING's of AZZHOLES.

But I have worked for some cool ones that don't think they're god.

The worst thing about SOME Cheif Pilots is: They try to tell you how to fly in what they think is THEIR aircraft.....I always get a good laugh at that. When they can show me, in the plane, that they can do it better than me than MAYBE I'll alter my technique and/or procedures. Until then, shut the fukk up and go do your paperwork. Luckily I haven't had a bad cheif pilot in awhile.

A chief pilot is just like anything else in life. He may have good and bad tendencies but 90% of it is how YOU deal with him. Positive behavior breeds more positive behavior.

A chief pilot is just like anything else in life. He may have good and bad tendencies but 90% of it is how YOU deal with him. Positive behavior breeds more positive behavior.
