What is AA going to do with it's 10,000 80's. How long can they keep going?

Apparently, they are flying them to ROW 20 at a time...TC

Don't forget, at Delta, they're MD-88s. Don't ever ask a Delta captain if he flies the 80. The answer will be no. He flies the 88. :D

Whoa boy man... a long time. Latest I've heard is the year 2020. Heck, the newest one (N984TW) is a late '99 model courtesy of TWA, and a dang nice one at that - in fact it's the last MD-83 ever built. Our oldest one (N203AA) was delivered in '83 or so.

So far the latest fleet count had around 320 MD80s system wide, but 27 of 'em are going to the desert for good.

They are called Super 80s because when the MD80 first came out, it was a "DC-9 Super 80", which is really a DC-9-80 series (as opposed to DC-9-50, -30, etc). The "Super" is a marketing term which AA really liked, I guess, and the name stuck. In fact, when you go on Sabre (AA's computer reservations), any AA MD80 is displayed as "S80" on flight schedules whereas any other airlines' MD80s are coded "M80" or "M88".

Delta only flies MD-88s, which is really a fancy MD-83 with dual FMS and cockpit coat closet. It was designed in, you guessed it, 1988.

EVentually, 737-800s will replace MD80s, but not for a looooong itme.

Back in the day ('87-88), the ORD controllers used to call MD80's "Snakes". The UAL 737-200's were called "Guppies" and the 733's were "Super-Guppies".

But that was also when they had the "Scenic", "Wedge", "Cargo"... :( TC

And then towards the end, UAL's 737-200s were "Thunder Guppies", 737-300/500s were "Guppies", and 737-800s were "Super Guppies."
