Oh, those poor, misguided yout's. That hulking, brutal Marine. Caddy with booming hip-hop. I bet they just wanted to ask directions.

No worries, I'm sure the yout's have learned their lesson, are contrite, and are ready to apologize. After that, they will enter the world as productive citizens, and will NEVER, EVER commit another crime.

Like jail will change their minds on what they will be to society.

Do you honestly believe that this was their very first crime, ever?

The objective isn't to "change their minds", it's to remove the threat to society. The term rehabilitation is fairly new. In the past, crooks were punished, not rehabilitated. Rehabilitation is a "feel good" term that means little. The idea is to punish severely enough that they won't want to return to the big house. This can be done with jail, or death by marine.

No one is rejoicing; it sucks that there is crime, it sucks for this marine, and yes it sucks for the perps. Of all the sucky outcomes, this is one of the better ones. Crooks don't succeed, victim alive and well.

I never said that this crime was not their first, only that I dont think that sending them to the big house will cause them to make this their last crime.

Rez,

I understand your perspective but the basis fo part of your argument is troubling.

"Many teenagers get caught up with the wrong crowd or make bad judgement calls and are lucky enough (unlike these kids) not to have to face the consequenses.... and when you are growing up...that is OK!

Hey- if these were terrorist that would be one thing... but American teenagers..... give yourselves a break......"

With these comments you have said:

A. It is ok to run in a gang and terrorize people when you are growing up. It is part of the process. It is only the unlucky few who get caught that have to actually face the consequences. "and when you are growing up...that is OK"

B. These American teenagers are not evil like terrorists, they are just kids being kids.

While you say you support the actions of this gentleman. You would have prefered that he took the time to look beyond the guns pointed in his face and realize that these were just youth making a bad judgement call and counciled them on their discressions. In the split second he had to decide what to do, he should have just decided to placate these misguided children. It would have been the right thing to do.

To compare these misguided teenagers to terrorists is just wrong. While a terrorists uses weapons and force to scare victims, these poor children were just using weapons and force to take $12 from an innocent person. Big difference. At least in your world.

While I agree with you that "cheering" a death is wrong, congratulating this man on making the best of a very bad situations with the odds well against him is absolutely justified. I know I was impressed.

This is not a law of the jungle debate. It is not a fight between the "haves and have nots." It is a classic case of right vs wrong. Right won. Would you have felt better if it was a 30 year old man that died? or what if the former Marine had died? At least the poor misguided children would keep growing up. your scenario of everyone living after the incident is quaint, but you can't set ground rules in attacks such as this. It is a split second decision.

That girl and her friend were not making "bad judgement calls," They were not victims of society, they were acting as criminals and deserve whatever they get.

Coughing up your wallet does not mean you're not going to get blown away for your magnanimous gesture. Many years ago when I was a student at the University of Miami I was on my way to the local watering hole and saw a police car with lights flashing stopped in front of the Li'l General, I believe, a local convenience store. The officer was standing over the clerk who was thoroughly dead. He ,the clerk, gave the robber(s) the money and they shot him anyway. Just a kid trying to earn some extra money.

not to be a party killer, but this ex-marine may have been a top notch trained " blackbelt" in whatever art you may think of.........kickboxing, karate, judo, etc.........all is never told with the press..........as we all know from the flying articles
You've gotta give credit where credit is due.

"Stephens credited Autry's military training with helping him fend off the group."

dang if that doesn't make me proud!!

It makes you proud that he killed a young girl? What kind of man are you? The Marine isnt proud of it at al. He wishes it hadnt come down to that. I live in Atl and I saw the story.
I am also a combat veteran just back from iraq and I can tell you that I got no joy out of killing somebody. Oneof God's children. thayts not something to celebrate regardless of wheather the kids were doing something right or wrong. Those without sin cast the first stone.

Ofcourse what these kids did was wrong but to celebrate killing themis plain asinine
