gringo said:Flyguy6, I think you missed the point. Nobody here is celebrating that this Marine killed a girl. What we ARE celebrating is that 1 guy, armed with only a pocketknife, defeated 4 thugs armed with guns, knives and brass knuckles. The fact that they were teenagers is really irrelevant, especially these days..
It is only irrelevant if you make it. Interestingly the Marine isn't celebrating, and he has more right to this event than any of us....
gringo said:The fact that a teenage girl died for her misguided stupidity is not the point. She and her group decided upon a course of action which led to disasterous results- and if you read the article, it seems that this group was responsible for other muggings as well. .
Yes, it is the point. Unless of course you don't make it the point. It is bad enough that 17 year olds are mugging but to respond nonchalantly and say oh well is almost as bad. At what age are we outraged? Are 15 year old muggers ok? How about 10 year old?
gringo said:It really is a shame that she died, and no, I´m not saying she got what she deserved, but that´s life. She was 17, fully capable of making her own decisions, and she made a very very very bad one. People die every day for dumber mistakes, mind you..
It is a shame? You just stated that it was irrelevant. The US gov't says she can't make decisions, like having sex (rape), voting and drinking. So she isn't fully capable.
If she was your 17 year old daughter, would you want her to have the opportunity to right her life? Obviously the state does too.... That is why minor records are sealed.

I did not serve...agreed.

Would you have felt better if it was a 30 year old man that died? or what if the former Marine had died? At least the poor misguided children would keep growing up. your scenario of everyone living after the incident is quaint, but you can't set ground rules in attacks such as this. It is a split second decision.
That girl and her friend were not making "bad judgement calls," They were not victims of society, they were acting as criminals and deserve whatever they get.
Right or wrong? Black and white? No. This is very grey. There are no winners here. It is poor parenting, poor decisions and death. I am glad the Marine defended successfully, but The Marine clearly states he doesn't feel like a winner, victorious and happy. If he doesn't then why should we?
According to the popular logic of this thread, if ones grandmother or toddler jay-walked and got run down dead, the attitude wouold be- "They deserved it" and Oh well.
The issue here is not the crime or the event. It is the response to the event. How one responds defines who one is.....
