I'm pretty sure DEET is dangerous and not allowed in the US (I could be wrong). Nevertheless, there are quite a number of countries that require some sort of bug killer to be sprayed before takeoff or upon arrival

Strong bug repelent can be a life saver in Africa.
My flight MX died from malaria after he worked all day on a reverser problem on the ramp in a place called Niami in Africa.

Many a times we had to wait 8 hours for fuel as we did not bribe the right people in Lagos. With the doors and hatches closed to keep mosquitos out, and with no APU or ground-air, we were rolling around in sweat aboard the plane while we were waiting.
DEET would be just fine if we could keep the doors open and get a breeze.

Yes, get all the shots ya can before leaving, all the companies I worked for have refunded every dollar for immunization. Also ya may need the record of shots to enter certain countries.

Just about every bug repellent that's worth a crap contains DEET. It's legal in the US and on the shelves of every grocery store.

The military currently makes us world travelers get the full Hep series, yellow fever, small pox and a bunch more. The Anthrax shot is back too. Of all the shots and travel gear I've been given, the one thing that has saved my a$$ (on more than one occasion) is a package of Imodium tablets. I don't leave the US without 'em!

Thanks for the info guys. I checked out the centers for Diesese control and found a few clinics in my location. Some offer what they call passport vacination, they cover the basics.

Not allowed in the US? Go to your local outdoor store or Walmart. You'll be hard pressed to find an insect repellant that doesn't use DEET as the active ingredient.

The doctor I talked to (infectious disease specialist) strongly recommended carrying insect repellent with a higher amount of deet. I asked him about the talk I'd heard about deet being bad for you, and he said it's not a big deal and it's way less risk than the crap you can get into if you're bitten by a bug overseas. Makes sense to me.

I would recommend that you go to a clinic that knows wtf they are doing. I managed to get them to do typhoid and Hep A and B. They balked about hep B-"we only give that to medical professionals" until I told them I was on a beat up freighter with all kinds of pieces of sharp metal sticking out everywhere to get cut on.

Next time I will do some better research...

Not only that, but you need to worry about the blood supply in these places. If you get badly injured in a car wreck on the way to the airport, you're subject to getting blood that might be contaminated with hepatitis.

Hi!

Never got shots for civilian overseas stuff.

However, I'm going to Lowe's Motor Speedway, and other locations down South, so I better get a TON of different shots for all the bad stuff down there in the boonies!

IDIOTS in NYC and DC!
Totally out of touch with America!

Basically, all the Republicans and Democrats are worthless, money-sucking, corrupted a$$holes who don't give a crap about normal Americans like you and I!

True, however what's really funny (or sad) is that about 80% of the blood used in our hospitals is imported from other countries (probably the same ones you just described) as Americans simply don't donate enough blood. I know they always do a post donation test for hepatitis, etc but still - it's a shame more won’t donate...

Ps. I have been donating for some 15+ years; now I just make sure at least a week+ goes by before I fly…Cleared it with my FAA doc too…

Ps. Some say it can actually be good for you…

Of course, I’m sure other studies will show it’s really bad for you…

skyward80 has confused DEET with DDT. I have heard people mix them up before during conversation.

Ha! remember when the war started and the military was popping gabba gooblim or gooba goblim or whatever they called it.

Rather get gang rapped by the whole primate section at the local zoo than get that again.

Yep, nothing like a cheek-load of ice-cold GG to make your day. Although I think I'd rather go with that again than anything involving gang rape....:erm:

Got the "round the world" regimen in 1998, but haven't had anything since. One of those things I need to get to but just haven't made the time.
