Did any of you guys get vaccinations when you started flying to all those exotic places?

A lot of companies will take you to a clinic in ground school to get them, or at least reimburse you when you get them.

I carry a emergency penicillin shot with me just in case and thats just for Canada.

No. But every time I go through India I swear I'm going to.

I think most of the companies will flip the bill for anything that you will need. However its up to you and Yellow Fever is really the only one that would be required.
I did the Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Hep A/B, a fresh Polio Vaccination, and always get my flu shot.
One thing you shouldn't do is get them all in one day.

Did you have a reaction to some of the shots?

My doc just went ahead and stuck me with all of them in one sitting. I did OK, just got a little nausea for ten minutes or so after the fifth or so shot, thats about it. But then again, I don;t like needles, so maybe that was it.

I never thought of carrying penicillin for a trip to Canada. Must be for diseases carried by the fish in all of their unspoiled rivers.

JohnnyP to answer your question I experienced no adverse side affects. I only received maybe three injections at a time.
The only shot I don't have is Japanese Incephylitis, my doc said thats a pretty bad one with a high percentage of reactions.

If you go to a clinic who if familiar with this, just tell them you want the world wide series.... It will take a few visit but you should be covered...

I would recommend that you go to a clinic that knows wtf they are doing. I managed to get them to do typhoid and Hep A and B. They balked about hep B-"we only give that to medical professionals" until I told them I was on a beat up freighter with all kinds of pieces of sharp metal sticking out everywhere to get cut on.

Next time I will do some better research...

If you flying into 3rd world sh*tholes your crazy if you don't get the full recommended array of immunizations. The scumbag freight operators could care less about your health. YOU have to take care of you. The scumbags I flew for wouldn't even put DEET on aircraft flying into Africa.

Regardless of the destination, you should get the Hepatitis vaccinations. An ounce of prevention . . .

I'm pretty sure DEET is dangerous and not allowed in the US (I could be wrong). Nevertheless, there are quite a number of countries that require some sort of bug killer to be sprayed before takeoff or upon arrival. However, this is a measure to protect the destination country (and not the crew) from bugs from the country of origin.

I would get any vaccination available except Anthrax. You only need that one if you're going somewhere that requires chem/bio/nuke gear and that's NA for the civilian types. If you are civilian and carry that gear, you better make sure you're getting paid REALLY well.
