I gotta a call today. They are not giving much notice though. Interview dates are the 7th and 26th. I explained to them that I wasnt able to go those dates because my schedule is already set for March and I am working those dates. I asked for April dates but unfortunately they don't have that set up yet because they are slowing down on hiring. Im an honest guy. I just dont want to call in sick with my current company.

How long has your app been on, and did you go to the open house?
 
Got the call this morning. Interview on the 7th. I applied twice, and updated after every trip, 1 LOR from an fo.

I've been watching this thread for a while--one of my friends and I went to the Feb 2 open house. I got a call yesterday, he got one today. My interview was scheduled for Mar 26--I'm not sure if the Mar 7 session is full or they just want me in the second session based on my June availability. Thanks for all the info on this thread!

Sounds pretty shortsighted to me. You might want to look at the bigger picture.

Exactly! beg, borrow, steal, get sick, forget to show up(don't make a habbit of it), whatever . If it gets you in the door you want to be in go... or don't and leave room for the people that really want the job.
 
I requested vacation, denied, bid for the days off, got denied, talked to my chief pilot and told him that I was interviewing and wont be available for the trip, he apologized that he didn't have a solitary reserve available to cover the trip so he couldn't pull me off. Then I called scheduling and told them I would not be flying the trip as I had an interview, they told me they would work on finding someone and would pull me off "emergency" for the trip if need be.. it ended up playing out that way even though they had 3 weeks notice. So I had "emergency" as the reason for not flying that trip... effect on my job at the old company.. nil.. ymmv

That's why, until you get to a more understanding company like JB, you never tell the CP that you need a day off. I mean, if you are sick, you are sick...

Not much notice? The 7th would be twelve days notice. That's a little short, but not unreasonable. There are plenty of places that will call you and ask you to be there on Monday. The 26th is a month away. That's plenty of time.

As far as your schedule goes, do what you have to do. Every company is different as to the climate regarding interviews. If they have a history of being reasonable, then you be reasonable. If they aren't that way, well, then they reap what they sow.

I had a similar scheduling conflict when B6 set up my interview. I tried to play nice with my old company and after a lot of hassle I was able to work it out. I was prepared to call in sick if I had to. It's just business. The fact they won't let you off to interview for a clearly better job tells you they don't give a shiite about you or your welfare. So be it. Call in sick.
 
CP: Why did you call in sick to go to an interview when we told you we couldn't give you that day off. That's a violation of company policy and the employee manual. You weren't really sick.

You: Well, sir, I was so angry and frustrated that we couldn't work something out I thought it would be safer if I didn't fly that day. I would have been so distracted and resentful at having missed out on an excellent opportunity to further my career that I was afraid I would have inadvertantly made a mistake and jeopardized my crew and the a/c. I'm really sorry about that. It was a tough call. Better safe than sorry. I'm sure you understand. BTW, count this as my 2 weeks notice. I got the job.
 
Who's got the skinny on the end of march-april class dates? Just wondering incase I get the job.

What's the scoop nowadays at JB? How long until current new hires upgrade? Any guesses?

How long to hold a line? To hold LGB? FLL?

Looooooooong time to upgrade. I was hired August 07 and expect 190 CA in JFK somewhere around the 5-6 year mark if I take first available. 320 CA JFK somwhere around 10-12 years. But who can look ten years down the road? So who knows. Expect longer at the other bases.

Reserve 320 FO in JFK for me was 4.5 months. The 190 guys got a line in in 3 months or so. a fella one class ahead of me (early August) got a LGB Reserve award for December. Guys in my class were awarded FLL for December as well. Reserve in LGB is a long time, maybe someone else can say exactly how long.

Thanks S! Trying to get some current info for a buddy of mine who's fed up with flying for a Supplemental.

That's WAY long time to upgrade. I thought you guys still had plenty of aircraft on order.
 
It's not a 5-6 year upgrade for the 190. The last class through had guys at the 2yr mark. The bus IS about 6ish years...maybe longer. We are getting about 6-7 190s per year and with selling some 320s, we're getting a net gain of 6 (i think) per year.

Yes, we have a $hitload on order, but slowed our growth for now...the 190s (100 on firm order) have had some deliveries defered along with the bus.
 
I understand..but I still think for you and I it won't take that long for the 190...I was class 7-07, I think I'll get the award just after my 2yr.

UNLESS there is quite a pay bump, that will change everything.

I'll throw in my opinion. Anyone hired today is looking at a 4 to 5 year upgrade. Anyone hired in the last 12 months is probably looking at 3 to 3 1/2 years minimum.
 
BUT...that call all change anyway. I remember 2 years ago when I was pursuing SWA, upgrade there was 6-7 years...NOW, it's like 10 with age 65 and the wicked slow down of growth.

We might appear stagnant for a while, but after we recover from the pending recession, things will pick up for all airlines...also, the mergers will affect us too with whether or not each consolidation will trim flights in markets we serve...B U T, that's another thread...back to hiring.

I hear both March dates are about full if not full already

Huh? On which airplane? I have been at JB on the Bus for 2.5 years -- if I upgraded before 5 years I would probably die from the shock. In which case a FO junior to me would have his upgrade dramatically shortened.

Don't forget that you not only have to contend with the 320 FOs senior to you, but the 190 CAs senior to you as well.
