JB to FedEx? Moot question - JL won't consider 'em.
Frontier to FedEx? Moot question - JL won't consider 'em.
ANY major to FedEx, or furloughed from ANYWHERE except USAIR? Moot question - JL won't consider 'em.

Only exception to the above would be one of those positions, then some other job at FedEx Express - - then JL has to consider 'em.

FDX - AA? I believe we have at least one of those on the board - - I'll let him (them?) speak for themselves. I doubt we'll hear regrets.
Hey Tony, not to argue with you or anything, but I had a guy in my new hire class at Aloha who left to go to FedEx. I'm pretty sure though that he was in the pool at FedEx long before he accepted the class date at Aloha.

You know the guy.

I know him, huh? So, does that mean he knows me, and he knows you, so he could tell me who you are? Hmmmmm :) j/k

I'm bettin' he was hired, or at least added to the pool, prior to JL's tenure. I'm only expressing what I understand his policy currently to be. That policy could change tomorrow, or he could be replaced tomorrow. I wouldn't expect the no-furloughees policy to change, but anything else could. SOoooo.... if you wanna work here, apply. Most people waste more than $50 bucks at a casino, and the potential reward is much more significant.

i thought it was just that fedex wouldnt take people furloughed from an airline because of their potential to be recalled and ditch the company. i thought they'd still take people actively employed by another carrier, since if you leave your active employment you must resign and there is no recall to bring you back.

so feddy wont take furloughs or any people from a major (except Uair and any other exceptions)?

I could tell you who I am, if you are nice :D

Two guys from AA and two from TWA (prior to the "buyout") in my new hire class at UPS. This was during the glory days of hiring at all the majors. (2000) Also know of a couple of guys that went to DAL or UAL after getting hired here, not so bright. It's a whole new ball game now, of course. Being a stinky freight guy ain't so bad anymore. Adios.

Of course, I'm nice. Just ask my kids. Wait, don't ask my kids; they think I'm mean. Ask my wife, she thinks I'm . . . well... trust me, I'm nice.

Even if I knew who you were I probably wouldn't know who you are, anyhow. I AM curious, though, to figure out who I know that was at Aloha.

I enjoy a good mystery. :)

Ok coffee talkers, here's the subject dejour.

Leave JB after 18+ months with a captain's upgrade on the table this winter at JB, or go start over again and hopefully ride the next hiring wave towards long term growth at FedEx? Top 20% seniority for 25 years at LCC or begin over at a great (albeit mature) company?

Thoughts from either company's drivers?

Tired of talking on that? How about a guy leaving Frontier to try at Fedex? How about the guys who left FDX in summer of 01 for AA?

Who do you know that has left one (promising) carrier for another (just as if not promising) carrier?
Albie,
I hope this advice helps you out. I'm not with FedEx, but I do work for the boys up the road in Louisville, so I'll do the best I can from a freight guy's perspective:

For what it's worth, I'll take cargo over passengers any day for a number of reasons, job security being the biggest. Also, freight has to move all over the world, and even the smallest packaged cannot arrive at it's destination via a fax or conference call. Even during slow economic times, people still order stuff and odds are that a seat-less aircraft will be easier filled than a pax one.

You never have to worry about a package getting sick, unruly, or hear it complain when the sort is running late.

Again, I don't work for FedEx, but as an outsider here is what I see:

A strong company with 30+ years in the industry
A strong competitor in the global freight/package market
Very good career earning potential
Longevity and stability

Not to say JB isn't bad either, but where do you see them in 5 years and where do you see FedEx in 5 years? Nothing is guaranteed, especially in this industry, but IMHO I think the move to FedEx would be a good one.

And neither are male flight attendants. I'll take the boxes:)
And add large, highly aged female flight attendants to the stack too. I'll stick to the boxes as well.

Yo Clyde,

I may be wrong but I think Albie was just stimulating a thread and not seeking advice. He operates a Interview Prep Service (and a darn fine one from what I have read) and was probably probing for info for one of his customers as a follow up. I have never met the man, but can say from my exposure here that he is not comtemplating an airline switch, right Albie? He has loads of customers that now fly for JB and I am sure has loads more seeking his services.

But, if I am wrong and he wants to turn Blue, I am sure the door is wide open for him. But once again, I think he is true Purple and was just starting a thread for input from the gang for research probably as follow up for a client.

C yaaa

Well first,, I know who English is and "the guy" and I will talk for free bananas.

As for your reasoning about not hiring furloughees, I don't agree. Several years ago when I worked at a regional, I could not apply to FedEx because I did not meet the mins. Then I got hired at a major, after 9-11 got furloughed, then got a job with another company. Now I meet the mins, but they won't talk to me because I'm a furloughee... that is supid.

As for your original question, ask yourself .. Do you want to work graveyard shift for the next 10-15 years? Ya, i know they have daytime flying, but you won't be able to bid it for years.

Several years ago I went to an Air Inc seminar, this exact subject came up.
Kit Darby said a lot of guys transfer from Cargo to PAX flying, but you don't see a lot the other way. He was speaking about the large carriers not the upstarts. So I guess you also have to ask, do you think JB will still be around in 10 yrs.
