Abdullah el al-Badri, secretary-general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, said Sunday that oil prices would likely go higher and that the group was ready to raise production if the price pressure was due to a shortage of supply -- something he doubted.

"Oil prices, there is a common understanding that has nothing to do with supply and demand," al-Badri said on the sidelines of an energy conference in Rome.

Also over the weekend, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was quoted Saturday as saying crude oil prices at $115 a barrel are too low, and that oil must "discover its real value."
Ahmadinejad made the remarks during a visit to an oil and gas exhibition in Tehran late Friday.
We've got problems. Iran, a sponsor of terrorism, says "oil prices are too low" as a Japanese tanker was hit by a missle near Yemen and pipelines were blown up in Nigeria.

The Iranians spend vast sums around the planet promoting (and enforcing) their ideology. Nuclear weapons programs aren't cheap either.

This provides some perspective for the real threats that are out there.

Actually for those of us who really understand the problem it is the weak dollar that is really killing us. Also the little secret out there that OPEC can produce anymore they are running at full tilt. Guess what folks we have finally reached peak oil at a time when China, India, and other countries want as much as we do! Still think solar, wind and nuclear are stupid.

No. I think solar and wind are stupid. But Nuclear is a huge part of the answer. But try getting a nuclear power plant built in less than 30 years these days. Thanks Al.

FAJ

Wind and Solar make up 30 percent of Germany's power grid with more to come......And guess what Nuclear is also a finite source Uranium is in tight supply and at present levels is not the MAIN answer.

Wind & solar will always be there, so why is it stupid to invest in making it a viable source of power??????

Let me guess your a republican cookie cutter suburbanite living in your little closed minded bubble.

I say we tell Iran it is getting too exspensive to store our nukes in underground silo's.

Max: Before throwing insults around, you may want to brush up on your grammar and punctuation. It is pretty bad. Suggestion: Read out loud what you type before posting it. You can catch most of the errors that way.

Plenty of untapped oil off our own shores and various other places around the world. Greenies are a problem. Nuclear is a good idea.

That's the best solution to the problem!!!
Lets show'em how cheap a cruise missile is.

So there you were going along making some very good points about energy, then you ran off the road and into the ditch with that one.

I seriously doubt that 30% of German electric power is wind/solar generated. It's more like 3% total energy for "renewables" (wind, solar, biofuels, etc.) . . .about 6% of electricity from wind.

Nevertheless . . . the Germans take a rational approach and put wind farms in smart places . . . like off the coast, where wind is constant. And they're expanding this (and other renewables) like crazy. It's quite impressive.

Would you care to guess who consistently blocks wind farms like that in the US? Here's a hint . . . it's NOT "cookie cutter republicans". It's democratic stalwarts like Ted Kennedy and the insane greens from the left side the aisle.

Because it's "visual pollution." And birdies might smack into them. This is INSANE.

Energy policy in the US is unbelievably f-d up and short sighted, and both sides of the aisle are equally to blame.

So what about solar panels on my roof and an electric car to plug in at night sounds evil???
It's free eventually, but the people in power want to keep things the way they are, raking in the cash to rule over us. I wouldn't have to fork over $$$ every month to them, good for me, bad for them.

Sounds like saving the country/world one house at a time to me.

Any one want to donate some solar for my roof???

WOW is all I can say to my rebuttals!!!

Never stops to amaze me how stupid many pilots are!

Yes Germany is set to have over 30% of their power derived from solar/wind. Thats a fact.

Sorry everyone is so offended by the truth and so thin skinned.

Suburban living is not a Republican or Democratic thing, it's an American institution. Right or wrong it belongs to all of us.

Hey Max you moron, you couldn't be more wrong with your stats. You said this:

Wind and Solar make up 30 percent of Germany's power grid with more to come......And guess what Nuclear is also a finite source Uranium is in tight supply and at present levels is not the MAIN answer.

Here are the actual facts from Wikipedia, a very reliable source:

Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into useful form, such as electricity, using wind turbines. In windmills, wind energy is directly used to crush grain or to pump water. At the end of 2007, worldwide capacity of wind-powered generators was 94.1 gigawatts.[1] Although wind currently produces just over 1% of world-wide electricity use,[2] it accounts for approximately 19% of electricity production in Denmark, 9% in Spain and Portugal, and 6% in Germany and the Republic of Ireland (2007 data). Globally, wind power generation increased more than fivefold between 2000 and 2007.[1]

Germans invested nearly US$5 billion in new solar photovoltaic systems and in doing so employed nearly 35,000 in the solar industry. Germany now operates a solar-electric generating capacity of about 2,500 MW. Analysts estimate that solar cells in Germany now generate about 2 TWh of electricity per year, or about one-half of one percent of German electricity consumption.[1]

So Max, let's run the numbers shall we? Wind makes up as of 2007, 6% of Germany's power and Solar 1/2 of 1%. I'll cut you some slack and we'll call it 1%. That makes Wind and solar totaling 7% of Germany's power. Care to divulge where the other 23% of your fantasy stat's are coming from?

According to this link, Germany derives only 3% of its total power from solar.

It's not 30%, and it's not even close to 30%. Yes, we need to look into alternative energy solutions, but don't use inflated numbers to show how far behind the US is. We are in fact second in the world in wind and solar energy production.

Infinite amount of wind + Infinite amount of solar engergy = Infinite amount of hot air!

WOW is all I can say to my rebuttals!!!
(Why won't everyone just agree with me?)

Never stops to amaze me how stupid many pilots are!

(You're stupid.)

Yes Germany is set to have over 30% of their power derived from solar/wind. Thats a fact.

(Don't dare to question my "facts." Rather than provide a source, ANY source, I'll just repeat that it's a "fact". Don't make me "prove" it again.)

Sorry everyone is so offended by the truth and so thin skinned.

(I offer a classic "non-apology" apology. I.E. "I'm sorry you're too stupid to agree with me.")

===========================

Max P -- Energy issues are something I think a great deal about, and worry about their impact not just on the airline industry but on US prosperity in general.

If you're going to discuss the issue, why don't you try using facts and non-inflammatory, non-partisan language? It's a timely and important topic, and calling people dummies does nothing to advance an argument or line of inquiry.

If you can't do better than this, even if you're 100% correct in all your opinions, no one is going to care. Why? Because you provide no proof, no arguments . . except the worst kind, the ad homenin attack.

I'm all for it too except that it would take a solar farm the size of Texas to power a state the size of Rhode Island. As for the left vs right statement, suck it Tribek, even your beloved T Kennedy, the Liberal among Liberals, won't sign off on wind farms off the shores of Cape Cod, can't mess with the sailing you know!

How about all the soccermoms in their Excursions and Suburbans with the little magnetic "support our troops" and "god bless the USA" ribbons on the back of their monstrosities stop driving their kids to and from school everyday and have them take the damn bus? There's a way to save.

Max does not need "facts". You see, liberals are allowed to "run from sniper fire" in their minds as long as they think they can get away with it, hence Max's outrageous comments.

Kinda like W "served" in the ANG, I guess. The last 8 years have contained more "facts" like that than one could count.

Uh . . . except G.W. did serve in the ANG. It's a completely, utterly, incontestable fact and matter of record. I think there's plenty of current and former ANG pilots who would take it quite personally if it were suggested that their service was anything but honorable, whether their unit was activated or not.

(I suppose by my own standard I should provide a citation or source . . . but is this really necessary for this particular fact?)

No question whether or not he "served" on paper. That's not what I'm talking about, and you know that. I'm not questioning anyone else's service. I'm questioning the validity of W's "service".

I'm all for anything to avoid sending cash to our enemies.

Several British Economists have opined that the Iran, Venezuela and other nations have used their central banks to take positions on oil futures, driving up prices in the speculative market.

The rational price of oil is $60 to $90. I'd love to see a correction take these speculators out.

Maybe the left and the right can come together.....Alternative energy sources(including nuclear) AND more drilling/refineries....It's time to quit sending our money to the enemy......

OK WOW YOU ALL JUST NEED TO SIMMER DOWN......

Here is my point what is wrong with trying to find alternative energy sources to keep the demand lower on oil. Hence making gas cheaper for the airlines to buy which will ensure we survive.

How did Ted Kennedy become part of the argument. I think he was wrong with his decision too. Yes wow what a rebuttal wind and solar and nuclear or other forms of alternative energy won't ever work because Ted K tried to protect his constituents.

The point is Solar, Wind and nuclear are all viable LONG TERM we need to stop thinking short term like GWB does. We need new ideas like a large gas tax. This will get Soccer moms out of their SUVs and into smaller (albeit negligible more dangerous) vehicles. But it will bring the demand down on fuel which we as pilots desperately need.

I can't wait for the dems to win!!!! Mccain wants to get rid of the gas tax....yea thats really going to help. What an idiot. YeeeeHaaaaaaaaa
