This is one problem I don't think you can blame entirely on Dasburg. He's a businessman...he'll give DHL whatever they want, provided they're willing to pay for it.
The question of why Airways wasn't Cat II was raised in the early 90's. At the time, their excuse was that DHL didn't want to bear the cost of certifying and maintaining their aircraft to the higher standard. They felt that at best, Cat II certification would be of value to less than 1% of their operations.
I guess nobody gave any consideration to the true cost of being only 99% reliable.
that may be true to DHL operations in America prior to the purchase of Airborne. Airborne being an express carrier had customers who depend on and demand express service. If DHL and/or Astar do nothing to give the DHL/Airborne customer the service they are looking for they will leave (and many have) for UPS and FedEx.
If your (Astar) owners do not provide the equipment to provide the service DHL customers demand, do not act surprised when the axe falls across the neck. And if/when it does, do not blame ABX. They are just providing the service they always have. WAY WAY before DHL came to gum the works up.
