IL-76 Crews ??

Anyone heard of a company called North American Aviation, based in TX ? They are advertising for IL-76 crews for a FL-based operation. You don't see much call for crews qualified in Russian cargo airplanes. What's this all about ? What's an IL-76 type rating cost anyway ?

Actually, this same ad ran back in April. It is kind of intriguing. Are there really guys around with time & ratings in this airplane who have the right to work in the USA, Comrade ?

I wonder how the certification works for a foreign airplane model to be flown by a US operator with US crews. Does the IL-76 have US certification ?

Man if you see the state the An-12s and 26s are in, boy o boy...the 12 is pitchblack from all the exhaust soot. I don't think they could find a local crew with the cojones to fly those things, hence the ukraine guys (paid in vodka!). I've never seen any 76s though, but it would be interesting to know we have a small soviet airforce in our backyard!

OPF is a very cool place to visit, a lot of mothballed classics here.

Yeah, but the AN-2 is a monster airplane. Got a chance to look at a couple of them in SSI where some broker took them in trade from a South American relief outfit that traded them for a DC-3 or two.

Also read an article in AOPA Pilot magazine about some guy who had one for his toy. The airplane is HUGE. Quite a toy, as toys go.

You guys ever see the videos with the An-2 being tumbled and looped around? Quite a site....

IL 76 in Iraq

I saw these planes a lot in Iraq. They were coming into Mosul airfield everyday. Also An 12's and An 24's. I believe they have a contract with DHL, some used the call sign DHX.

Well especially out there at a certain test range in Nevada, also Ft Bliss and Ft Polk too, plenty of ex warsaw pact planes, and some from afterwards.

I took a few illicit photos of aircraft in India last year. Got some of Il-76, Il-78 tanker version, also SU-30 MKI, MiG-21

What kind of routes do these guys fly? There website shows destinations but not solid routes.... I get the feeling they do alot of domestic flying here in the US, I'm surprised the FAA allows them to operate here. If I see any of them I hope I got my camera handy

Thanks...interesting website but that's not for North American. They're going to be strictly a US-based operation with the IL-76/78 from the guy I talked with.

Ask any operator who flies an Embraer, Canadair, Airbus, or Dassault product, and they should be able to tell you about the certification process for a foreign airplane model.

I didn't state my question very clearly. I guess what I was wondering is if the IL-76 is currently certified by the FAA as the other airplane types you mentioned. Obviously, many foreign-made airplanes are flown in the US.

I don't know how many Russian-made airplanes are currently certified under FAA authority. Since, to my knowledge, the IL-76 has not been operated in the US before I just wondered if it has FAA approval.

I recently talked to a guy forming a cargo operator and planning to use surplus C-17s. He told me the airplane is NOT certified for use under Part 121 and getting this approval is key to the plan working.

The operator using the IL-76 here will not be a 121 operation so maybe the certification issue isn't too big a deal. The whole thing is pretty interesting nonetheless.

The guy I talked with said there are and they're buying a bunch. Beyond that, I don't have the foggiest. But, there's only one place to get C-17s...

C-17 crews here have complained here about being worked to death, and with talk at times of producing more C-17s because they are being used so much, and in the middle of a war, I think that person is blowing smoke who is talking about buying a bunch of C-17s. There certainly arent any sitting in the boneyard.

McD was talking at one time about a civilian version called the MD-17, but I dont think it was economical for commericial cargo operators, so nothing ever happened with it.

...I don't know any more than I was told by the agency doing the hiring for this proposed company. I suppose lots of people have grand ideas that don't come to fruition. But this one was interesting, if not a bit far-fetched. There was no mention of C-17s in a boneyard....but there's only one place to get them and certification of the acquired airplanes was a major issue to the person with whom I spoke about this.

Here is an IL-78 owned by North American Tactical Aviation, the first of up to five (?). Their website is here. Not ver much info there, but there it is. Search for them on google, apparently they are looking for IL-76 crews and IPs on the SU-27 and MiG-29. How cool is that???

It certainly is, the IL-78 being a tanker and all, aka Midas. The FAA shows a valid reg, but no C of A.

It is to be called a BC-17X and they are trying to get approval to acquire them.
