All this crap about poor pitiful black people and how they were done so wrong is about to get under my skin. It happened, it was bad, it's over, and so what. I do not see any of it happening now. And what about the American Indian. I don't see them in the news every day crying about how they were done so wrong and demanding restitution.
I was born and raised in Selma, Alabama (Please don't hold it against me). I was in grade school at Dallas Academy right behind the Dallas County Court House where Martin Luther King stood on those steps and gave His address. I was there, I remember it well and I don't remember it the way it's told now. It wasn't 5000 white men beating, shooting, burning and hanging 1000 blacks. It was more the other way around from what I remember. This whole thing is a farce for the money, that's all. That's the way I see it and I don't give a rat what anybody else has to say about it.

I wouldn't call what he said stupid. Whoever this person is has one heck of a sense of humor. I will defend the poster because he and I have the same type of sense of humor. Sometimes you just have to laugh and not take yourself to seriously. I am certain the poster knew of the contributions made by black people in aviation and other areas as well, but pointing that out before making a joke like that loses it's comedic value.

In my opinion, he said what others were thinking but didn't have the guts to say it. I know, some have more class, yada,yada... Chris Rock made millions from jokes like these. I would have made the same joke, but he beat me too it. I bet that both black people on this board laughed when they read that. He is not insensitive, classless, tasteless or whatever. He is funny. Don't take life so seriously; take time to laugh at yourself as well as others. Life is too short to be PC and not have a sense of humor.

Wow, White America still has a long way to go. "Discussions" like this are really depressing. People who appear to be decent, and who most likely are decent in most respects, reveal severe character flaws and/or ignorance. It isn't about being PC, which, as far as I see it, only encourages people to pretend. It's about respect and empathy and humility. Qualities that we really do not pay much attention to nowadays.

I am very happy that the original poster apologized for his remarkably ill-conceived "joke". I am less happy that it was the thought of potential economic consequences that brought home to him the profoundly offensive nature of his remarks. He is young. He will, hopefully, learn and grow like all of us.

FYI, unlike what some others have said, I can promise that making this kind of "joke" would never occur to me, or to many, many other people, in a million years. To those of you to whom it, or something similar, leapt swiftly to mind, you might want to spend a little time in self-examination.

Those figures may be correct, but the system of incarceration is a little biased. You see, while there may be a disproportionate amount of blacks in prison, this in and of itself can not be objectively indicative of blacks committing more crime.

Crime is dependent upon the availability of opportunity for a particular crime. The issue here is what crimes are available to the different segments of a population. People from all races commit crimes and it isn’t realistic to generalize solely on color. It can be argued that white people commit almost as many crimes as any other race, it just takes place in different settings. For instance, white collar crime is not a heavily policed area. Street crime, on the other hand, is more heavily policed and more easily prosecuted. White collar crimes tend to be invisible and more likely to go unnoticed. The repercussions of white collar crimes can sometimes induce harm on many more people than a single incident of street crime.

Blacks, due to a myriad of social and economical reasons, including an unfortunate legacy of slavery, are seen mostly participating in street-level crimes. These type of crimes tend to affect victims on a smaller, more individual basis and usually are violent in nature. Most have a fatalistic outlook on life and were born into poverty. A product of their environment where rules on advancement in life are predicated upon a different set of rules. Role models and aspirations and what hold status or value are contingent upon the environment.

Things like credit card fraud, insurance fraud, insider trading, unethical corporate maneuvers, cheating on taxes, cheating on your timesheet - you name it. All of these types of crimes can very easily be gotten away with. Of course this in not inclusive of every white collar crime, but in order to be in a position to execute or have access to a lot of these crimes requires some level of education and money.

Presently, I'm enjoying the wave of corporate scandals. In reality, the crime that occurs at the executive level imposes more damage on a much larger scale to society than petty street crime. The implications of corporate wrong-doing affect many more people financially for many years to come, including their health in some instances.

Historically, corporations went unscathed for the crimes committed by enjoying the protection provided to them by the very nature of the limited liability structure of a corporation, thus absolving many executives from proper punishment. I’m glad to see those silver bracelets match that expensive suit.

It's funny you mention that. There's several tribes in the Midwest suing the Federal government for 70-some odd BILLION dollars for restitution from supposed royalties off "their" lands. A few days later, they said they'd SETTLE for $28 billion. Gee, thanks. Isn't that check for $18k when you graduate high school enough? How about the free college education (if you chose to use it)?

Thanks for the disertation on socialeconomic crime NYCPilot. I disagree with the "opportunity" part though. Crime is a matter of personal choice in my opinion. The prison system is full of people who chose to commit a crime. Lots of people have opportunity to commit a crime but donot. Can you explain this?

On the other hand, its very offensive to the people who suffered due to the racism in american history. A joke like that can be funny to some and very disturbing to others.

But i do have to give you credit for speaking up and apologizing. If you ever want to check out a slavery museum in DC and i will guarantee you that you will be coming out with tears in your eyes...its a very sad and ignorant part of our history.

You’re correct in stating that it is a free choice to commit a crime and this holds true for anyone who has done something wrong. My point was to debunk the myth that only blacks commit crimes because of their disproportionate number in the prison system. We are dealing within the scope of those who commit crimes, not those who never carried it out. There are some people who are presented the opportunity to commit a crime and don’t. It is the ones that do that is at issue here.

In terms of opportunity, certain crimes are only accessible to those who are in a position to exploit it. It is what is available, within your abilities that you believe you can get away with. Depending upon your life circumstances and where they have place you in society, will determine what range of crimes you may commit.

A crime hasn’t been committed unless it is acted upon. By the way, there was a movie that dealt with this issue. Preconceived crime. It was called “Minority Report” and starred Tom Cruise.

In this follow up post I would like to address all the people who called it tasteless, and got offended by the joke. Are you guys the same people who go to a comedy club, cross your arms and refuse to find anything funny. Chris Rock, Chris Tucker and other black comics made millions telling jokes like these. Chris Rock's funny answer to blacks shooting blacks is to make the bullets too costly for the average black guy to afford. " I am going to get a second job, save up and shoot you," says Rock. To quote Larry the Cable Guy, " That's funny I don't care who you are."

Life is too short to get offended by jokes. This board has become so PC if you make a joke you might offend someone. Truth is I offend people everyday. I am certain I offended someone with this response. The moderators should not ask someone if they would say the same things on the job as they would say here.
