How many of United's L-1011s are still in service?

How many L-1011s does United still have in service? I think they got those from the PanAm purchase. They are probably a whole lot cheaper to operate on long thin routes than a 747.

I haven't seen a L-1011 fly in a long time. I don't think I have ever seen one in United Colors.

They dont even operate the DC-10 anymore...havent for about 5 years. I remember seeing a few pictures of the L-1011 but its been MANY years. It was in the OLD paint scheme too. No more 747-200 or anything..just the 737-300/500, A319/320,747-400, 757-200, 767-200(will be gone soon) 767-300, 777-200. Thats been there fleet since the DC-10 left many years ago and so did the 747-200.

Saw a THAI SKY AIRLINES L-1011 the other day.

Never seen a UAL L1011, ever!...Only Tristars of US carriers I've seen are from DL

Delta aquired most if not all of the UAL/Pan Am L1011-500's They were refered to at PUDs, having been in service with PanAm, UAL and finally DAL. Very nice machines and a pleasure to fly. Don't know where they are anymore but I suspect that some are in Victorville, and others may be in service God knows where. Can't imagine how any third world operators keep this type of airplane in service anymore. DAL operated -500's from Air Canada as well.

I believe they bought 6 of them when PanAm sold there Pacific division to UAL. Turned them into tankers to supplement the VC10's

Check the tail-number on that United L-1011..Pure Pan AM.

As for cheaper to operate than than the 747s..Sure, also less load and less range...Heck, take the motors of any airplane and it won't burn no fuel at all.

One of the flight attendants I flew with today is furloughed from ATA. She was flying on the L1011. She said all of the flying for the L1011 is for the U.S. military flying troops around. She also said they were always breaking down and things were MEL'd all of the time. I guess that's part of the reason why no one else flys them anymore.

there are about 40 to 50 old Delta and United L-1011s at Victorville, CA outside of LA in the parking lot.

United acquired L1011-500's from Pan Am when they purchased some of their routes in the late 1980's. Most of these aircraft were then acquired by Delta circa 1990 or so. I was in MTC at DL then and remember them as low time airframes in very good condition and largest seat pitch I had ever seen in 1st class. I could almost lay down on the floor between seat rows lengthwise. Dl of couse changed that when we refitted them.

I believe Kallitta operated several cargo converted L1011's during the Mid 90's if I remember correctly.
