The pay ain't what it used to be. Glamour exists only as an echo of generations past.

But still...

We have this and other forums dedicated to the concept of flying airplanes for a living. I'll bet tax attorneys don't check W2info.com every friggin day during their time off to catch the latest rumor and hyperbole in their industry.

However, the fact that one job is more glamorous than another doesn't necessarily mean it pays more. The high demand for certain glamorous jobs may even mean that the company will pay less, due to a large pool of applicants. This creates a 'glamour discount' in the marketplace, the potential that you will be paid a little less in return for the opportunity to call yourself something glitzy like a fashion designer.

I can't wait to see the term "glamour discount" bandied about by management.

Joe Leonard thinks pilots are not special. The public thinks we're glamorous. I'm SOOOOO confused... ;) TC

guys I believe that article was written in 2000. No matter how cynical you are things were pretty glamorous in 2000. Back then SWA pilots were considered underpaid and most people didn't think twice about working for FedEx....

Not to be picky but the reference on the salary chart showed 2006. That might just be when that chart was assembled??

And who is thinking twice about working for FedEx???;)

i guess i missed that. If you click on the link to the left for Airline Pilot it tells the story of a UAL captain who commuted to work in his own "personal jet." They go on to say that he helped secure a 28 percent raise for UAL pilots. I assumed the article was written just after 2000 when pilots at Ual, Dal, AAA, etc were able to make 300k per year with plenty of time off. Back then the job was glamorous. Back then a place like Fedex was a great place to work, but definitely not top tier and most people considered SWA to be underpaid. Getting a job at Fedex or SWA in 2000 was not like today where you've got the winning lottery ticket.

I was just pointing out how much this industry has changed and if the article was using old data then the HIGH GLAM, HIGH PAY designation might no longer apply to us considering the average salary has been cut in half. Not to mention the reduction in benefits.

Where's fighter pilot on this list?

Tucked safely in the middle, right above gay porn star and just below male runway model. And about 10 spots below HERC DRIVER. If you don't know, you better axe somebody!

It's still a glamorous job, if you hang out at the Fox Bar with me and my swinging brother Yurgi.

I made a couple hundred grand last year and live in a pretty tight knit community of successful people, but I honestly think most of the guys would trade jobs with me in a heartbeat even if they made less money. I know the doctors in my area are making about a third less than they were 10 years ago and the lawyers/businessmen are working 70-80 hour weeks. (At least that is what their wives keep telling my wife.) The true money studs in my area right now are homebuilder types even though most of them haven't spent a day in college, but they all say that game is feast or famine every few years.
I think if we lived in a pure socialist society and every job paid the same 50k regardless of what it was, short of photographer for Victoria's Secret, I would still pick to do what I am doing.

Chop away, brother, chop away...

Brokeback Mountain, right?

Ah, yes, that wonderful place where Starlifter pilots are free to love each other, wear dresses, put on makeup, and shop for shoes without fear and discrimination. Or was that the movie about cowboys? Can't remember....

I think there are a few other assorted pilots in there also.

That's great, but....what do you need 5 cars for? I have a nice ride, but I'm not sure what the heck I'd do with 5 nice rides. I can understand 2 boats, though! Any bets his wife is bangin' her tennis pro? "But, honey, he's so much more fun than you and has TIME for me!!"

Couldn't agree more. I never have understood what the hell anyone does with a 10 bedroom house, or 5 cars, etc. etc. Nothing is more precious to me than my time. Keep your money if you're expecting me to work 80 or 90 hours a week and be stressed out all the time. I'm more interested in enjoying my life. :)

Yeah,maybe...but at what price? You're health? Betcha he has no time to enjoy all the toys given the demands of the job. No thanks

<ding> <ding> <ding> Last two points on the money. Toys don't mean jack. Life satisfaction comes from family and friends, and the TIME to be with them.

Studies have shown over and over that while Lotto winners believe a big win will make them happy, and it will for a short period of time, their happiness baseline reasserts itself, and now they are miserable with a lot of expensive crap. The only way to modify your happiness baseline is with interpersonal relationships.

It is better to be rich than poor, but it is better still to be poor and happy with a full circle of friends and family, than a rich jerk with an antique car collection.

If you think the "High pay and Glam" part was funny. Check out the link next to that artical labeled " sexiest job"

#1 Firefighter.......no shock.

#2 Flight attendant? they must not be talking about the ones at the regionals!! 7 legs a day, dealing with people freaking out because they are on a puddle jumpin prop plane, Freezin in the winter, and sweetin like a ceo in court in the summer (No APU). all for 17k a year....now thats sexy. I suppose they do go to glamerous destinations.....like Pellston, MI!

and how does Lawyer fit on this list?
