Why don't non-furloughed pilots of furloughing airlines offer to help out their fellow furloughed pilots from their own airline?

Using Continental as an example and not having access to accurate data, it appears to me that the almost 5000 non-furloughed pilots could easily put $2000+/mth in the pockets of 150 furloughed Continental pilots by simply donating one day a month of their pay. $2000/mth doesn't replace what they are losing while on furlough, but it would go a long way towards helping those guys make ends meet and send a clear message that they are valued members of the pilot group.

Why don't guys step up like this in industry?... or does it happen and I'm just not aware.

Wow, now there's a concept! Pilots caring for pilots.

Age 65 fight didn't show you anything?

I can only hear it... "I was furloughed too, and no one helped me. F**K YOU!!! I'm not giving up a nickel!"

If we go to that socialist program I am all in for the furlough. Seems paying people to do nothing would encourage them to sit at home and not seek work. If I recall correctly the govt is already doing a great job of that with more than one day a month of my pay.

I believe CALPA has a medical insurance assistance program in place for their furloughees...

Got to agree with the Freight Dog, this is a dog-eat-dog business. That kind of unity left this industry with Pan Am, Braniff and Eastern.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

So the new hires don't get medical for 6 months but if they are furloughed then they are medically covered?

Every Spirit Pilot must donate $45 a month to our furloughed pilots (for medical). This passed with 80% approval.

ALPA says they can't payroll deduct it...so they will just send us a bill each month. If you don't pay, then you go into bad standing with ALPA.

I'm relatively new to the world of commercial aviation, but I don't think any of us pilots have a say in whether or not we get furloughed... and I'm also willing to bet that just about every furloughed pilot out there would rather be flying the line than hanging out in limbo as a furloughee.

I'm happy to hear that you aren't being threatened with the possibility of furlough.

AirTran's union opened up an account for donations which are then equally disbursed to our furloughed brothers and sisters.

Why do furloughed pilot deserve my money any more than a poor Haitian who is forced to eat dirt. Yes...many people in Haiti eat dirt to help prevent the fealing of starvation. It is a slow death.

Or, why does a furloughed pilot deserve my money any more than my recently divorced aunt who is trying to support her two kids on the salary of a part time gate agent?

I think the point is...there are many people in need of charity. This is America, and I should be able to choose what I do with MY money.
