Kelly also said Southwest had no plans to drop any cities served by AirTran Airways after Southwest completes its acquisition of AirTran. Some of the AirTran cities are smaller than those typically served by Southwest.

This has been stated many times before. A complete change in SW biz model. Smaller communities with ground support staff contracted. IF this holds true, imagine the possibilities for growth domesticly... Think Fresno, Jackson Hole (mentioned by GK) The statement made is "IF we can fly one FULL flight a day into a city, it is something we need to look at". Take a look at the margins earned by Allegiant these days.

Keep the cuts commin Delta, we will need more gates in ATL.

You guys are running out of gate space at larger airports, so naturally you have to search for podunk cities to support any growth. Make sure you high five the Allegiant FO as both of you do simultaneous walk arounds at Grand Island, NE. Sounds like a blast!

Landing in Grand Island would pay me $210/hour. Very similar to the rate I get when I land in a busy airport.

Ya, it's much better to give all these cities to the regionals rather than have mainline do it.

A strip of concrete, a shuttle van and a hotel room.

Once you've seen one you've seen them all...

Don't knock layovers in small towns- they can be really fun ...

Hey, your mom was your mom bc your dad thought she was hot at the time
;-)

Seriously good women in the little big towns

-going to be tough to get the same margins with SWA's better labor compensation and work rules.
-i.e. - cpntracted=********************ty quality. kinda tough to do a 20 minute turn with a bunch of people on minimum wage
-You've seen allegiants payscales right? They could make money flying 3 people from Ohare to Midway.

Speaking of small cities, how about 2 or 3 daily flights on 717's from HVN to BWI.The airport received a $250,000 grant to secure new service and the talk is to offer a new carrier contract ground support.HVN was listed a few years ago as the most under served airport in the country. The airport just finished adding overruns, resurfaced the runway and removed many obstructions. With the yale complex and many high tech companies, loads and yields should be good.
The trip to ny airports is rough,I95 is a parking lot at times and bradley field is almost in massachusetts and over 50 miles away.SW would be a good fit and a better product than piedmont dash 8's to phl.

Sounds like "Field of Dreams", Build it and they'll come unfortunately, many have tried this before and then you've got a nice facility and no one using it!

Main reason for years was the restricted usable runway length because of trees that for years had grown and affected landing and take off operations.Key west has a runway that is 800 feet shorter than hvn but with clear approaches airtran and delta offer 737 flights to orlando and atlanta.
The market is there, united stayed for almost 5 years with 737's to ord but the restricted runway made full loads at times unworkable.Runway 2-20 has never before been cleared of obstructions and the overruns add a layer of safety. With the greater new haven metro area larger than many other small cities now gaining new service,i believe HVN's time has come but with high fuel costs and the weak economy, this may delay new service.US has said it has no plans to add clt flights and this is a shame as they would do well in serving the south and at times phl is a bottleneck.

When Delta or other legacies get those rates back, and we will, what will you say then? I know what you will say: "Grreat, another Grand Island and Lakeland 3 day trip. Boring! I sure wish I could GO somewhere, not just go to nowhere.". You are closer to that than you think. Higher pay for the moment is the only thing you have now. Your culture has been dying since you guys treated the Airtran guys poorly in your merger. Too bad.
