Hi guys,

I am managing a Hawker 800A (strictly part 91)out of houston. I am the only pilot on salary I always get contract SIC. I manage the airplane and am responsible for Mantainene and all up keep of the avaition Department. My total time is about 4900 hrs of which 1000 is in Hawkers (abt 800 PIC) i have about 1200 hours in Beech jets. My question is, How much should a person in my capacity get paid to manage this airplane? Am i entitled to Benefits,401K etc. Last but not the least The owner flys about 250-300 hrs a year. Thanks in advance

I would say yes to bennies and 401k. I would not do it for less than 125k/year. That is if you are doing everything. I do not have any kind of salary survey that I am getting that from. I just know it is not cheap to live in the Houston area. Essentially you are the CP and manager of the flight department. Also why not a full-time co-pilot?

He doesnt have to pay for there taxes or benefits or training for the second pilot, thats why we dont have SIC.I would much rather have another pilot on salary coz its so difficult sometimes to get pilots.Am making only $62500 and they offerd to bump my salary to $ 75000. plus I have to take my own taxes out am not on payroll(paid on a 1099).

Way too low pay wise. A HS125-800 CA alone should be paid on the average of $100K according to NBAA & Stanton surveys (national Average).

If you haveto pay your own taxes, makes me wonder about wheather you are actually an employee of the company or not, sounds as if they are trying to skirt the IRS laws on contract wages / employee - employer relationship.

Being responsible for management, mx etc would cause me to think of drafting a Aircraft Management contract and charging accordingly by the month. $10K a month comes to mind on a 800 (look at what the facs are charging for monthly management fees).

I would call around and see what other Management companes are charging and charge accordingly.

Sounds like they are trying to cheap their way into / stay in aviation.

BTW I'd brush up my resume just in case...

PS: Why no ATP?

You are just a contract pilot too then. You having to pay your own taxes and others does not make you an employee at all. This guy is taking advantage of you in a big way. I would say more closer to 130 to 135k if you have to buy insurance and pay taxes. Not to mention that if you ever want to collect any social security you are going to have to pay that also.

I would be charging him a monthly managment fee plus a salary for your self.

That 75k is an insult for what you are expected to do. This guy is operating a multi-million dollar jet not a 172, he needs to be paying you for that.

sorry, forgot to update I do have ATP . Guys please keep the replies coming up am gonna show this thread to my boss coz no matter how much i tell him he thinks am over paid.I manage all aspects of that airplane I had the interior done ,paint job,Mx,RVSM,hotels, rental cars pretty much am the flight department

Not to beat a dead horse here but just for perspective. There a company in the midwest that starts their FO's at 65k on 800A's plus all the bennies and 401k.

Hope this helps and you can improve your situation. Like someone else said dust off that resume.

One question. Does your boss pay for your training?

yes he does. Its a big deal though, they think they are doing a favor. I had remind him its like fuel for your airplane. you have to buy it o run the airplane. A training is required by the FAA and insuarance companys

Please talk to a tax specialist. If you set up a corp. you will pay much less in taxes each year. Don't forget to put money away for the taxes as they can be very painfull if you are not prepared.

Sounds like a prince ....

In the meantime you are getting good expirence, go out find a job with a real flight department as soon as you can. (I am sure, however, that you doing this anyhow)

At some point the IRS is going to nails this prince's balls to wall because you are IN FACT an employee and what he is doing is illegal. There has been a great deal of info published on this subject on the NBAA web page. (lemme guess, no access because he is too cheap!)
