Aloha Air shuts down

No flights as of tomorrow

Aloha Airlines will be shutting down its interisland and transpacific passenger flights beginning tomorrow, ending its 61-year service in Hawaii.
In a news release today, the company said United Airlines and other airlines will help accommodate passengers who have flights scheduled on Aloha after tomorrow. Aloha has stopped selling tickets for future flights.

“This is an incredibly dark day for Hawaii,” David Banmiller, Aloha’s president and chief executive officer, said in the release. “Despite the groundswell of support from the community and our elected officials, we simply ran out of time to find a qualified buyer or secure continued financing for our passenger business. We had no choice but to take this action.”

Banmiller also expressed regret for the 1,900 employees this shutdown will affect.

“We realize that this comes as a devastating disappointment to our frequent flyers and our loyal business partners who have supported this company for many, many years,” Banmiller said.

Aloha filed for bankruptcy two weeks ago, saying it could not handle its financial troubles with the interisland fare war and escalating fuel costs.

Aloha will operate its air cargo and aviation service units while it continues to look for a buyer. It received a bid last week, $13 million from Young Brothers.

Aloha will not operate some flights tomorrow connecting Hawaii to the West Coast.

These include:

>> AQ 482, Honolulu to Orange County and Orange County to Reno

>> AQ 442, Honolulu to Oakland and Oakland to Las Vegas

>> AQ 486, Lihue/Kona to Orange County

>> AQ 485, Kona/Lihue to San Diego

>> AQ 468, Maui to Sacramento

>> AQ 474, Maui to Oakland

>> AQ 476, Maui to San Diego

>> AQ 484, Maui to Orange County and Orange County to Sacramento

This is awful. As I said to a few close to me, "There but for the Grace of God go I."

This industry is ph$&^ed up.

BTW, only 2 pilot groups stood up to mgmt in the post 9/11 concessionary years. DL and AQ. UAL, NW, CAL, all folded under the fear of mgmt's threats.

You guys and gals are to be commended for that. Take mgmt to the mat once again if they plan on using pilots as their cash-flow control valve.

"NO PILOTS, NO ALOHA"

My buddy there sent me that shirt. I still wear it at least once a week here in TX.

DL did not stand up to management post 9/11. They took a voluntary pay-cut to keep Delta out of bankrupctcy, told Delta they were done giving up, then gave up when Delta filed for bankruptcy anyway. Get off your high horse. Delta pilots are no better than the other airline pilots you just mentioned.

The airline world SUCKS and not in a good way.
To all you Aloha guys and gals, and I know more than a few of you, I want to wish you all the best. I want to thank you for all the zed fairs and jump seats getting me back and forth from California to Maui/Big Island. You have been a real class act in my eyes. You all always went out of the way to accommodate my family and myself, even bending the no 1st class rule. Again, all the best. This is a real sad day for aviation and Hawaii. If I can ever help you out, you can be sure that I will do my best to repay all the favors.
( I will swim before I ever ride GO!)

Man, this is really sad. Aloha has some great people.

I totally agree. Some of the best/nicest people I had the pleasure of working with, although briefly. I am hoping and praying the best for all of the AQ family. Watching the way the group came together in the face of these devastating events, and how everyone is conducting themselves is nothing short of humbling. I swell with pride for even having been a tiny part of the story of Aloha Airlines. Thank you.

pure ha'aheo.
