Ever owned a business?
I've been nearly ruined by thieving employees. AirTran has a right to protect the entity for the betterment of all employees. Due to economies of scale, employees who steal trivial items can indeed have an effect on the bottom-line.
That said, everyone deserves a fair hearing/ trial.
I came off a trip once and found items from a cutlery pack in my flight bag. It must have fallen in there at some point during a meal at cruise. Had I been searched, should I have been fired for that? Employees can end up with items in their bag that just sort of fall in there from a tooth pick, to a sugar packet to a moist-towlette. You place an item on top of your bag as your getting organized, forgets its there, and later in the routine shuffle is falls in. They shouldn't be fired for such. But I have heard of pilots stealing headsets, company laptops, etc. THAT takes effort. Those items don't just fall into your bag. Regardless, everyone deserves a fail trial.
BTW, I now do a rough bag search before I leave the cockpit and make sure no company material is in there. Not worth losing the job for items that are worthless to me anyway.
The irony of such searches, however, is that they never seem to search aircraft cleaners. Those guys are the biggest thieves in the business.
