Why not use all available resources in an emergency situation? I do not see how using a private pilot to help out would be a bad thing, I am sure he understood how to lower gear, talk on the radio, and had a basic understanding of how to read a checklist, plus just having someone there in a stressful situation would help calm the nerves a little.

Hey XPOO, is that the guy in your avatar? Looks like a good guy.

Yeah, that's the guy! No one would mind having this dude up front helping them with the sticks, bells and whistles. Right?

In addition, the private pilot can log the time as dual since the FO (now Captain) has an ATP, correct?

Lilah

From the article: "There's nothing wrong with that," said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig, who confirmed Brown's role in the emergency landing. "The (acting) captain can take any action for the sake of safety."

Pity the flight wasn't longer...he coulda made Brown do his revisions for him and offer a few investment tips.

Beautiful!!!

I sure hope Brown remembered to bring the Maxim and Playboy magazines with him, too!

I thought that this private pilot showed class and respect for the airline pilots. He knows that he did not "save the day", but rather, helped out where he could. The "captain" did what he had too, look for assistance and use him how he could.

Good job to both.

Bingo, I agree with that. Good post.

Is it protocol to ask if there are any pilots on board at CAL? Never heard of that except in movies.

Insert Holiday Inn Express joke here.
