If I may ask, and I commend your company for sending all new hires to sim training (that's the way it should be), what is the point of hiring a pilot who can't be trusted to fly the airplane with pax for the first for 50 hours?

When we look for a pilot, we're looking for someone who can fly every other leg from day one - and our CEO's such a bad flyer that she's been known to curl up in the fetal position on the divan on bumpy days.

No problem,The explanation I received from our old CP regarding the 50 hour rule is "to allow the new hire time to acclimate to our operation and get comfortable with the aircraft", I personally think 50 hrs is a bit much, but then again maybe he got some complaints from the execs in the past, dont know for sure. We havent had a new hire in almost 5 years so it hasnt been a factor lately. We are currently revising the FOM so I'm sure this will be a topic we visit.
ps. it was kinda funny to me to come from being a E145 captain to the right seat of a Lear and not be able to fly with pax for 50 hrs.

All new pilots are typed in the airplane. They fly left seat (at PIC discretion--but just about everyone does it) on empty legs or right seat on pax legs.

Some guys will do both, i.e. if it is their leg to fly and it happens to be a pax leg they'll fly it from the right seat. The next leg that is their leg happens to be empty they'll swap over to the left really fast.

YMMV, but it's not unsafe to fly from the right seat. I'm not sure what that guy's point is.

For better or worse the airlines seem to have overcome this issue. Most if not all training is done in Level C or D sims and first time the new pilot gets his/her hands on the controls is on a revenue trip. Having watched this process for many of years, I gotta say it works pretty darn good and I really cannot think of many occasions when one ever had to do anything to interfere with the process. Maybe some are making to much of this issue?
