NOTAM 1108 – Membership Committee Report

Fellow Pilots,
The Membership Committee has been working since shortly after Local 1108 was certified as our bargaining representative back in 2006 to increase the percentage of pilots who are Members in Good Standing (MIGS) with our Union. Our principal motivation in doing so has always been an understanding that pilot solidarity greatly affects our Union’s relationship and influence when dealing with management, whether at the bargaining table or otherwise.
As you know, a pilot who has obtained MIGS status is defined as a pilot who stands current with all dues paid going back to November of 2006. At that time the Local’s bylaws were amended by a majority vote of the Union’s general membership to require dues payment as a prerequisite for MIGS status. In April of 2010 when the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was ratified, dues payment became a condition of employment for all pilots at Flight Options. However, pilots who have never paid dues or have failed to pay a portion of their past dues obligations are not considered MIGS under the Local’s bylaws.
Several months ago, in an effort to increase our collective solidarity and in recognition of the fact that some of our pilots had accumulated sizable past dues obligations, the Local 1108 Executive Board initiated a Dues Arrangement Plan. By participating in this plan and paying a nominal monthly fee toward back dues, delinquent pilots immediately become MIGS. In the time since the Dues Arrangement Plan was offered the Membership Committee has been working hard to contact all of our delinquent pilots. While this effort was initially met with a high level of success, we must now report that we believe we have recruited every pilot who is willing to obtain MIGS status.
Why did we come to this conclusion? The remaining delinquent pilots on our contact list either will not return our calls, claim they plan to become MIGS but don’t follow through or, in some cases, have angrily denounced us and our Union over the phone. To put it another way Brothers and Sisters, we have done all we can do and now it’s up to you.
We want to make it clear so that there is no confusion about this point: The remaining non-MIGS pilots are thumbing their noses at the rest of us. Those of us who are in good standing with our Union are being taken advantage of by these

freeloaders. Due to your Union’s efforts in negotiating our CBA, as of January 1 of this year the average wage increase for pilots at Flight Options will be 7.8% on top of the 10% raise we already received in 2010. Many of these same freeloaders will enjoy an increase of this amount or greater.
The Membership Committee believes enough is enough. We have concluded it is time to let everyone know who among us are freeloaders and who are fellow soldiers-in-arms willing to financially support our past, current and future efforts to have a strong union that provides us with a real say and influence at our workplace. So we have recommended, and the Local 1108 Executive Board has voted to release a full membership list so that every pilot at Flight Options will know who supports their Union and who does not; who supports our collective efforts and who symbolically stands against us; who contributes financially to our collective cause and who

freeloads; who contributes to our collective future efforts and who works to undermine our solidarity. This membership list will be published on February 1, 2011.
Now that the Membership Committee has done everything in its power to persuade the freeloading delinquent pilots to join with us in solidarity, it will be up to all of us to decide as a group what level of Solidarity we wish take into the next round of contract negotiations and what type of CBA we hope to negotiate in the future.
In Solidarity,
The IBT Local 1108 Membership Committee
Chairman Capt. David Williams

Thats a big 10-4. Its about time. Were going after the pilots that gladly accept the provisions of the contract with out financially supporting it.

Its about time.

That's Right

However, your title should read "Going after our own FREELOADERS".
And let me help you define "Going After". Bring them out of the
shadows, so that we may see them to explain the importance of being
in good standing with the Union.

Good for you guys. I wish we had some mechanism for calling out the dirtbags at Flexjet--the overtime grabbers and the office schmoozers and the "standards" guys whose talents for sucking up outweigh their deficiencies as pilots.

Who knows. Maybe the day will come.

That describes some MIGS at FLOPS, how about 2 lists so the furloughees can compare if they ever return. I'm sure they would love to see who helped them out the door and delayed their returns by playing bothsides as a MIGS. It's all about the money.

Yea that’s right, it all about the money. It’s about the money that I paid out of my pocket to support the union’s efforts to negotiate our contract. It’s about the money that the freeloaders have so far gotten away with not paying. Its’ about the pay increases that they are currently enjoying that I frecken paid for. It’s about the work rules and job protections that they are currently benefiting from that I paid for. It’s also about the small amount of money the union has been asking them to pay to get in good standing and the level of compassion and understanding that went into the decision on the union’s part of offer such a payment plan. And the level of outright antipathy displayed by those who reject it.

And more than anything else it’s about the money these same freeloaders will cost all of us during the next round of contract negotiations, because they are showing a divided face to management.

Kudos to the union on that announcement, I have marked February 1st on my calendar.

Then release the list tmro, why do we have to wait till Feb 1st. Oh, I know we want to be P.C and see if we can scare any more pilots into paying their dues. Thats crap in my book, I want to know who the pilots are between now and Feb 1st, there scum just like the rest. Release the list TMRO Eboard.

This is where your E-Board is smart...

Think they wouldn't like to do just what you suggest? Sure they would.

But they are thinking of the bigger picture. They are considering that the higher the numbers of members in good standing, the stronger their negotiating position is for the next contract.

Also, why show their cards to Management now, before they have to? Maybe they will get a bunch of deadbeats to finally see the light. That improves your position and may mean more money in your pocket!

Isn't that worth waiting less than a month for?

Ya know, ratting them out might get what you want, or it might just piss off those who are anit-union even more. Why not simply choose NOT to represent those not in good standing. THAT my friends will result in a very quick attitude adjustment. Think about it, someone has to carpet dance, looses their argument along with their job..opps...we'd stand up for ya buddy....but ya know, there's this dues issue...sorry....

When that happens just one time, and it will, you will NOT have any more members in arrears.

Think about it.

Wow. I don't work there. I have no dog in this fight. But it seems to me that you guys don't believe in somebody's right to respectfully disagree. What does a flops pilot who sincerely does not want a union do? It sounds like you want to lynch them. I respect your right to have a union, I'm glad that you got what you wanted, and I cheered your contract. But this just seems like revenge.
