Female CFI's

Just curious: How many people here fly with female CFI's? What is your experience? I'm eventually looking into becoming a CFI, and I've heard that some students prefer not to fly with a female flight instructor for a lot of crazy reasons. There are no women CFI's at the flight school I attend now, so I have nothing to compare it to. Just curious if it really makes a difference or not.

I don't see why there would be a difference. They all recieve the same training. The only difference I could think of is they look different from their male counterparts. At least....I hope they do!

I've had three different female instructors - one for private, one for instrument, and one for my single engine commercial certificate. All other certificates were done by male instructors.

Some were better than others, but not along gender lines. I don't think it makes any difference at all when it comes to quality of instruction.

I had female instructors for 7 of my 8 ratings. I love flying with female instructors, I personally feel that they have a calming effect on the lesson. They seemed to get the job done just as well as a male would without being nearly as anal about it all. Maybe some kind of "mother-hen" thing going on?

Shouldn't make a difference at all. I've flown with instructors of both genders who were very good, and some who were very bad. I'm sure there are some people out there who don't think women should be flying, but they can just wake up and join the rest of the 21st century.

If you want the CFI, go for it.

Makes no difference if it is male or female, in my experience, the quality of the instructor is determined by the quality of instruction they received as students.

I had a Female CFI for the second half of my Private as well as my Initial CFI training... Also the DE who gave me my Private and my MEI were both female's...

I have flown with some very good female pilots and some very poor female pilots... I can say the same for male pilots...

I would agree with you on that. My first Female CFI was drop dead geourges. However I had bad experiences with her when it was that time of the month. Her mood change was scary. Very short temper and not afraid to scream at 1500 feet. Since then I did not want anything to do with female instructors. I also think male pilots kinda have an ego thing. They dont want to be taught how to fly by a girl. Right now I have a female instructor and she is actually proven my past opinions wrong. She is easy to work with and not so testosterone driven.

The chief pilot at my school is a woman, my examiner for 2 checkrides was a woman, and the instructor that gave me my BFR after a 2 yr pause in flying was a woman. I have no complaints what so ever.

The one that gave me my BFR was very hot as well and it was hard to concentrate She was a great instructor, very smart, but lacked her CFII at the time, so that was as far as that went.

I"ve had two female instructors in my life time. One wasn't so great when I went for my private multi but the other was alot of fun to fly with. The second was was an IP when I was going through pilot training for the military. By the way I've also had great and not so great male instructors. The individual who is the instructor determines whether he/she will be good or not (common sense hopefully).

Ditto...except I had 2. I also had one female DE who was an ex test pilot for Cessna. Awesome pilot and learned a lot from her as well. This job/industry is more about personality than anything. You learn well from people you get along with, respect and understand...period.

My CFI was female and I have worked as a CFI with female instructors. There are good CFI's and bad CFI's. I have seen no correlation regarding gender.

Worst CFI I ever had was a female. On the other hand, the best CFI I ever had was a female.

But, to break the bubble on the "Gender doesn't matter" political bullsh!t, perhaps some studying into NTSB accident statistical data will help mold your training and your future students training.

Women and men do fly different and they also crash for different reasons. Statistically, but not a blanket rule, men will be involved in an aircraft accident because of poor decision making. ie., I have done this before, weight won't matter, I have the right stuff, that's not too much ice, it's not that bad of a thunderstorm, etc. Women, statistically, will be involved in an aircraft accident because they will mishandle the airplane. ie, poor stick skills, over/under speed, wrong configuration, x-wind, gear, flaps, etc.

Again, this is not blanket, but poor judgement by men 72% of accidents and poor stick skills by women 68% of accidents.

Women don't fly airplanes as well as men and men don't make as good of decisions as women. This will help to identify potential weaknesses and strengths in yourself and your students.

are you in this to prove something? I am
not mocking you. You have to answer that
yourself. Do you even want to be an
instructor, or is there a way for you to build
time without doing that? (I never did instruct
till I got to be a 121 Captain and since then
there have been some good ones)...

One of my IOE CA's was a gal. I have flown
for two other female CA's. Ya know what?
They were all good to me as a first officer,
had strengths that I didn't and they worked
to build a crew...maybe I learned that from
them, the guys always seem to know where
they stand when paired together...and I never
tried to undermine the extra stripe they had.

I have had two female instructors and have
thought highly of both of them. There is a
gal that I used to swap instrument time for
tailwheel time with (geeze, that was in the
'80's) and we still exchange Christmas cards.

The only female pilots that I have been around
that I have taken a disliking to seem to be here
cause they are trying to prove something.
Forgive my crudity but there have been some
cases of preferance given in hiring based on
plumbing. If you are playing the "female"
card to get a job you will be forever resented
for it. If you are here because you are an
aviator there are those that will still resent
you but there are some like me that will pick
up the tab at supper cause we know that you
are getting $hit from some of the other guys.

There are two female aviators that I love
to death. One I'd take a bullet for without
thinking about it...the sadness is that I am
married to neither. The truth is that no
lady should have to put up with me...

Here's a twist: When I was a CFI there was a CFI/DE in San Diego (KMYF?) who was a cross-dresser. A lot of you would recognise him in his "man-guise" because he wrote a monthly article for one of the flying magazines and his picture was always next to it (no, it wasn't Dick Collins). I had heard about it from some other instructors and thought it was a cruel story. Well, one day I'm at the airport and I see the ugliest female pilot (yes, worse than M.K.) getting out of an airplane. It was HIM!... I mean HER!... oh... It was that guy dressed as a woman- makeup, hairdo, the whole deal. It was GNARLY! There have to be some folks on this board who remember that.

Anyway... If we could find some of his/her old students we could get a better answer to the female vs. male CFI question as their perspective would be...unique.

As a general rule I tend to give female pilots the benefit of a doubt, simply because of all the crap they had to get through to get there.

On the other hand there's a lot of sh!tty pilots out there, on both sides of the gender line.

I appreciate all of the feedback and experiences, it's an interesting conversation topic. I have to agree, there are quite a few female pilots out there who's ego's and "need to prove something" rival that of our male counterparts. Either way, I think it sucks to fly with anyone who is an dillhole. But I also know that a lot of women have had to work a little harder in this industry sometimes to get where they are. I would really like to make flying a career, but was sort of concerned about students perceptions of female instructors, I'd hate to be a CFI on a schedule without students because no one wants to "learn how to fly from a girl". As for playing the "female" card...Honestly, I know that being female will give me a better chance at getting an interview, however it will be my skills and my attitude that get me the job. Hey, and I'm cute to fly with too. LOL

fwiw, I've found that female students sometimes benefit from some time with a female instructor. Men and women communicate differently. I got my CFI with one of the original '99s, and she had LOTS of female students who were a bit "intimidated?" by some of the older male CFIs and DEs.

Nope, my priorities are just fine, thanks. It's just a topic that has come up in conversation a few times with other friends who fly and I wanted a broader opinion. Whether you like it or not, people do carry around personal feelings based off of prior experiences. Right now I'm just learning all I can and having fun doing it.

I am really considering flying my Instrument rating at another flight school to learn from a NEW CFI, so I may just look for a female instructor, to see if I learn better/worse that way. Personality is so important for me to learn well, and I want to be taught well right off the bat so that I can carry on the good work. I don't personally care either way on whether I fly with a female or male instructor. I just wanted to get other opinions.
