Does anyone know if Fedex will interview a furloughed pilot?

As far as I know the answer is no. I talked to a friend who flies for FEDEX about 3 months ago and he told me that they were not going to interview furloughed guys because of what happened in the early 90s. Apparently they hired quite a few AA furloughees who then resigned with AA, but were recalled anyway. Almost all went back.

The word I got the other day is that they are interviewing and hiring USAIR guys, because they figure they wouldn't have anywhere to go back to.

I feel your pain. It really hacks me off. Of course I'm sure FEDEX won't say they will not consider furloughed clowns...that might be discriminatory. Interesting to see how the actions of those before us are haunting us.

There is a fact that I think the few remaining hiring airlines don't realize:

In the past, US Air's management had the policy of ignoring resignation notices they received from furloughed pilots. If a furloughed pilot got hired elsewhere, and tendered a resignation to US Air, the resignation was simply thrown away.

Today, however, US Airways' management has publicly stated that they will honor resignation notices from furloughed pilots.

In October 2001, US Airways' VP of Flight Operations, Greg Gibson, sent a letter to all pilots stating that US Airways' policy on this matter had changed.

The company's lawyers have informed the company that discarding or otherwise ignoring a resignation notice would be considered destruction of pilot records. This would be considered a violation of the Pilot Records Improvement Act (PRIA).

Consequently, henceforth US Airways will remove from the seniority list the name of any pilot who tenders a letter of resignation.

Southwest, FedEx and any other hiring airline need to know this fact, so that they will not fear to interview and hire us poor US Airways furloughees!

Likewise, all US Airways' furloughees need to be aware of this, so as to make informed decisions.

I had originally heard the same thing about FedEx not interviewing nor hiring furloughed pilots. However, in my March interview class there was a furloughed USAIR pilot who not only got the opportunity to interview but got hired as well. Not sure where the truth lies but this one is a true story. The only thing I can think is that maybe that USAIR pilot had applied prior to Sept 11 looking to leave USAIR before this mess started, not sure??

Hearing that a poor fuloughed slob was hired by FEDEX is nice to know.

I doubt having the app in prior to Sept 11 was a factor...I've had my app in since FEDEX went electronic, almost 2 years ago. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I should have been called by FEDEX...I suppose FEDEX could have looked at my app and concluded I was a clown (not far fetched), but since 3 majors invited me to interview, I feel as though I am somewhat competitive.

FEDEX having recently added the question of whether you are on furlough or not just adds fuel to the fire that they are screening out furloughed folks. I don't know why else the would ask. Anyone? Anyone? Bueler.

Yes, FEDEX will hire you

I started a post on the AAA message board asking the same question. Several messages were returned from furloughed US Air guys who have been interviewed and some were fortunate to get hired by FEDEX. Many had applied post 9/11. All had LOR from employees of fedex. So everyone should apply NOW!!! Good luck.

Word is that FedEx is only considering furloughed USAir pilots. All other's are not going to be called. Comes from the inside.

I think the USAir folks are in a categoery by themselves because there have been more than a few hired recently. From what I've gathered over the last several months from talking w/the pilot recruitment dept about buds' applications as well as what I've heard from friends doing the same thing, it is possible to get hired while furloughed but you will need, at a minimum, the following:

1) AT LEAST one rec from a company pilot (probably several).
2) A friend here would have to go talk to the chief pilot and convince him why you should get an interview.
3) Would be absolutely required to give up your seniority number elsewhere, when I don't know, but probaly if/when offered employment (seems pretty unfair to ask for it before)

Again, the USAir guys may be a different animal altogehter.

Yes they do interview furloughed pilots. I am furloughed from one of the big 4. Had app in way before 9-11. Got interview. Passed Sim; took test. Gouge is good news takes 2-3 wks via phone call; bad news comes in one week via FedEx Truck. Mine came via truck one week to the date!!

I have only heard of USA guys getting hired. As far as I know and don't quote me on this, I think I am about one of the only ones from another major to get the call for an interrview.

I "think" the no furlough clause is correct. They are a great company and I can understand where they are coming from. Am I bummed....hell yeah. I would have resigned my seniority # in a heartbeat to fly for the Purple and Orange!!!

Just interviewed with JetBlue. It seemed all the interviewees were furloughed US Airways, and looking at JB's last 5 months classes that seems to be the same also.

FedEx Interviewing select Furloughees

I concur with the previous posts that indicate the USAirways furloughee's are being interviewed and hired. I talked to the Chief Pilot about a friend that is furloughed from one of the Big 3 and he responded, "Doubtful". Not the news my friend wanted to hear, obviously.

He did say specifically that they were looking at USAirways pilots because "The chance of most of them ever returning to USAirways is remote." FedEx is very cautious of wasting time hiring pilots that might be recalled to their previous carrier.

Been here over a year and love the job. Can't imagine having a more flexible job than this has been.

I've had my app in with FedEx since Jan 01 without a call. I guess my biggest problem is that I don't know anybody at FedEx! This is so frustrating because I really want to work there but can't even get an interview. I've gone to the AirInc circus and meet John Ryder, Kim and Beverly ande they all say my app looks good; I just need that extra push. Any recomendations? All info / help is appreciated! If you want to work for FedEx, then work every angle you can! I have a feeling that they would interview you because they probably feel that FedEx is a more valuable career than Sun Country. (I don't know anything about Sun Country, so I couldn't compare the two.) What they are afraid of is hiring someone that is furloughed from what they perceive as a more lucrative job and then having that pilot go back to the previous carrier.

I was just trying to let everyone know that FedEx is very cautious of hiring SOME furloughed pilots.
