Hey guys,
I have several friends in Mem and have heard the same rumors. It has to do with losing the mail contract??? That would be huge? Again, just a rumor, but when you hear it several times from different people, it just makes you wonder?

Again....Source!

Don't throw flame bait out there without a little backing it up.

This is a very crazy industry, so as idiotic as it sounds, it makes people nervous when you say stuff like that.

Incidently, if the USPS has done a 180 on how happy they are with Fedex, they've got 5 and half more years to change their minds!

How in the He11 did the mail contract get caught up in this. FedEx has delivered the mail 100 times more effeciently than Emery ever did. If it were not for mail contract FedEx would have been hurting long before this.

OK, simmer down now guys. Here's my worthless two cents to add to the string.

No, this has absolutely nothing to do with the mail contract, the USPS is happier than they have ever been in their existence, and if they weren't, they couldn't do a thing about it for about 5 1/2 years as USNFDX pointed out. And no, FedEx would not be hurting without the mail contract, us junior guys would never have been hired in the first place over the last 2 years. In my opinion business would be pretty darn flat (no growth), but there would be 500-600 less pilots on the seniority list as well. Anyway, I suppose you could argue the subject both ways, but none of that relates to the original subject, so here's what I've heard:

A guy I flew with yesterday jumpseated w/the chief pilot a couple of days ago. The gist of the conversation was that Flight Ops wants to hire (for different reasons including mil callups), but the bean counters don't. I guess they have been going back and forth for a while on this. There is no question that there are many seats seriously short on manning at the moment and some others that seem to be squeaking by. However, as seen by the numbers in the bid that came out, the DC-10 and 727 continue to go away at a steady rate. Additionally, it looks like a small portion of the South American 727 flying will be curtailed for an unspecified amount of time. Seats up the food chain need to be filled but as the 3-man cockpit numbers dwindle, fewer replacements are needed. What it sounds like is the bean counters have the upper hand at the moment, but flight ops wants more and will continue to yell louder and louder as more guys get called up, etc.

Bottom line: I too have heard the ugly rumor, nothing official has come out. Unfortunately (and most important to many of you), I'm not sure whether this means they'll drain the pool or not, nobody seems to be able to answer that. Hopefully something will come out soon. I also have a feeling that push will come to shove at some point, and we'll need more guys on the property.

Keep the faith, I know it may not sound like it now, but this place is worth the wait.

Fed Ex Hiring for the next year

Hello Everyone...
Here's what I heard and who I heard it from... About three weeks ago, I was jumpseating from MSP to MEM and had a business jumpseater with me (As a side note, hopefully this jumpseat wringer will get figured out shortly)... The business jumpseater was a scheduler on the company side... His primary duties include working on the monthly scheduling group with with another FedEx guy... Those two company guys meet with the Union guys to form "the Scheduling Group" for both FedEx short and long range schedules... Anyway, here's a paraphrase of what he said three weeks ago... "...The bid will come out for you guys, with a 90% probability, on the 10th of March. Approximately 130 captian and first officer seats will be opening up. The reason this bid took so long is because the finance guys and the operations guys are continually fighting over what number projections should be used for the upcoming year. Last week (the last week in Feb), the two sides came to an agreement about the numbers to be used. And these bid numbers are the result..."
So, for what it's worth, the scheduler's info was right on... I then continued to ask him about hiring in the next year, and here's what he said... "...with an 80% probability, we will be hiring about fifty guys by the end of the year. We will have about 80 guys reaching age 60, and, if historical trends remain constant, about 20 of those guys will move to the S/O seat positions... We have approx. 70 guys in the pool, so the new hires will come from there. The biggest assumptions include: 1)the economy, 2)the military callups because of the war, and 3)the retirement numbers... CRAF, if it happens, should not affect us too much..."

Given the primary and secondary bids, plus the number of positions that will not be filled amounts to approx 50 727 S/O seats.Looks like he turned out to be right about that number as well... The numbers and projections he gave were from Mar03 to Mar04...

Again, this info is about a month old... So, if his (aka FedEx's) projections/assumptions are correct, if your in the pool, chances are good that we'll be seeing you soon... However, since I'm not sure who gives KD her marching orders to hire more into the pool, it's anyone's guess as to when hiring into the pool/interviews will continue....

Hope this helps!!!

PS Losing the postal contract... I seriously doubt it!!! JMHO

Gents,

Since this post first started, I have been checking this out at all levels I can.

Spoke to a new Hire coordinator 20 minutes ago and got an interpretation of this rumor.

The new bid opens (25?) 727 SO slots. After the bid is complete, secondary requirements will come out. The smoke will clear from all this around May, and the requirements will then be known. Since the training dept works 2 months out, that means the first expected class could be the end of June or the first of July

There are about 200 over 60s expected between now and the end of FY 04 (June 04).

To readdress the original rumor, No more new hires/ classes this year........the end of FEDEX's fiscal year is June.

Which makes sense, the next possible class date would beJune/July.........which is next fiscal year.

He also stated, that he expects no more than 200 new hires (pool included) between now and the end of FY 04 (14 months).

This is the most reliable source that I know. Not second hand.

Hope this helps

good on-ya

Hornetkid

That is the most intelligent post I have seen in some time. Thanks for doing a little homework. I'm sure the rest of the poolies are quite thankful for the clarification.

Dismal as it sounds, its still a 100% better than the news from all other fronts.. I wonder how many people are applying for those 140 spots?

Class

I was able to get through to Kd around Mar. 12th. the good news is she was friendly and as helpful as ever, the bad news is she was very vague as to the start of any classes. I was unable to attend the class in Nov. and she seems to have wanted to keep me informed for comfort and sanity reasons. She has continuosly reassured me that I will not be swimming long but that she is "HOPING" for a class between MAY AND JUNE but has absollutely no idea when a class will be. She said to stay positive and it may come at any time. As I asked more questions she finally said it would not suprise her if she got a call to bring every one in on short notice or not at all this year.. So the call wasnt as reassuring as I hoped but at least she took the call and handed me any info she could. Thats all my intel for now good luck swimmers.

more fuel for the fire!

I got TWO, countem' TWO phone calls in the middle of the night for draft last night. They said they were desperate and it sounded like they were going to up the ante when I cut them off the second time. I had a kid going in for minor surgery in the morning that I was not going to miss.

Sounds to me like we need more B-727 Second Officers! Keep your chins up poolies!

I guess they won't be calling YOU anymore!!
