Gloating? Not me. I'm having a hard enough time just keeping my head above water as I paddle around the pool. And obviously guys like you and Huck have a better idea of what is going on within the company than those of us bobbing around waiting for our turn, but....I don't think it is a secret that airlines like USAir, United, and in some respects American, were heading into trouble before Sept 11. If I remember correctly, Northwest was the only major still hiring, and they were already curtailing training dates. Sept 11 just accelerated a process that had already begun. Obviously, even SWA and JetBlue aren't above financial difficulties, but I think they've set a model that the other major airlines are going to have to study if they want to make a move back into the black.

Now, with regard to FedEx...1st quarter net profits rise 45% and their stock is upgraded to a strong buy by almost every analyst that covers them. Most of the increase in profit has come as a result of ground shipping, but projections are air cargo is the fastest (only?) growing segment of the airline industry and Boeing projects it will triple in the next 20 years. I have obviously had absolutely nothing to do with any of that, but I do rest easy in the knowledge that FedEx is probably not feeling a huge pinch from any slowdown in the economy. In fact, just the opposite appears to be the case. That was the gist of my point to Huck. Nothing more.
With regard to your comments about contracts and unions, powerful unions are a wonderful thing for union members employed by a strong company, but a quick look at United reveals the result of pathetic management and aggressive union bosses all seeking competing goals. At the rate the pool is draining, (and with my timing with Guard obligations) I may still be in the pool while the next FedEx contract is negotiated. If so, I hope it is negotiated with both the interests of the pilots and company in mind. I work with a bunch of guys furloughed from other airlines, that are more concerned about their airlines survival than that 20% pay raise they just achieved.

Six months ago a furloughed buddy from UAL went to Paris on passes (even though he was furloughed) and I was a bit envious. Now as he tries to juggle part time ANG and other potential jobs while he waits to go (hopefully) go back to UAL in 2-5 years, I am just thrilled to be at FedEx. I'll fork over the cash for the tickets as long as I have a JOB...and you can't eat airline passes when times get tough.

I don't know enough about union issues and previous wage battles to say very much intelligent about the issue. To the company, I'm a probationary pilot. To the union, I am an apprentice. Seems to me that pretty much means "wear your pin, but don't open your hole too much"...and so I try to listen more than talk on any union issues. However, somewhere between "fair share" and "killing the golden goose" there has got to be some fair settlement in 2004. I'll defer to profile, et al. for the "big picture" on mgt verses labor at FedEx.

However...like you...in this economy it is nice to see GOOD news for a change, and so far our company seems to be doing things right. Despite the standard mgt verses labor noise out there it really is a great place to work. I hope your pool drains quickly and you guys are in training early in the spring. I know you're ready to rock whereever and whenever they send you, but perhaps you can at least have a line number before you (or we..) go.
 
Does anyone know if FedEx is continuing to interview this Fall? My furlough date at AA/TWA is getting closer...and closer...

Not to bum you out but from what I've been reading on this board FedEx will not interview furloughed dudes.

My furlough date isn't until January...hopefully I'll get an interview before......if they are still interviewing.
 
Fedex Interviews

I recently started at Fedex and my class was told that we would be the last class until next year. 3 people in my class are on furlough from a major US Airline with hubs in Charlotte and Pittsburgh. There have also been smaller groups of people interviewing as late as last week. Currently Fedex has closed the internet application process but you can still update online if you were already in the system. There are plenty of furloughees on the property though. They did require them to provide copies of their resignation letters to their previous employers.
 
I should have written...."unless you are furloughed from USAir." FedEx figures those pilots won't be going back. From what I heard no interview if you are furloughed from the big three.
 
I have heard people say that the next class could be in Jan. and some people say the spring, does anybody have a good guess on what the chances of a Jan class are.

My unemployment runs out in two weeks and I need to figure out what I am going to do.

Last year classes started back up in early February. If anyone knows of a January class last year, please speak up. I started mid-Mar, and I think there were 3 classes ahead of mine. Good luck.

I was peruzing das web site and noticed there was an error in your profile. Under aircraft flown you put 727/DC-10. I think you meant to put, "Sat in back and watched real pilots actually fly the 727/DC-10". Just thought I would help ya out. Have a great Southwest day.

You are right! I stand corrected. I have not flown the 727 or DC10. Of course for 72 Bucks an hour , I'd sit on the crapper! Speaking of the crapper, Isn't that where your file went at FDX after your interview? Ouch! Boy that was mean! Maybe this should be private message...nah... Have fine Southwest day! Would that be six legs or seven???

I am very sad for you my friend. I have a feeling you would sit on a bicycle post with out the seat for $72 dollars an hour. When your calling for clearance at 10 pm, I'm calling for the next round at the bar. You are also very misinformed about SWA, but thats ok, nothing new for you.
Maybe next Det meeting we can sit at the O'Club, I'll have a Sam Adams and buy ya a beer (If I can get ya to put the Kool-Aid down) and discuss life.

Typical FedEx Line

For the guys at FedEx:

What does a typical line on the 727 look like? (e.g., length of trips, days working per months, typical lengths of layovers, etc.).

it depends...

A typical line on the 727 at Fed Ex all depends on what you want. For me, living in Memphis, 2 young kids not in school, hired in February; my objective is day flying. I don't care where I go, or how often I go, as long as it is day time flying. I personally haven't taken off past midnight in nearly 4 months. Considering that is when I got off reserves, that is alright in my book. My line this month is all "afternoon out-n-backs". The first 3 weeks are Tuesday through Friday, depart early afternoon and land a little before midnight. The rest of the month is off. Twelve total days at work. This maximizes my day flying, my pay, and my time at home.

For a commuter, they may want something else. They may be looking for a week on / week off with layovers to avoid a crash pad and make some per diem. Others may be looking for weekend layovers in their home town. Like I originally said... it all depends on what you want. Fortunately, there is enough guys that want different things that most are satisfied.

I guess I am in the pool! I got the call in Sept. But last week, i got a letter stating that there was no official job offer, that instead I was in the "pilot recruitment pool." They still have to do the reference checks and some other stuff. this is my first civ job... is this normal? Or is this what "the pool" is and i shouldn't sweat it?

Hey guys in the pool,

Don't sweat it! I was in the exact same position this time last year. I got the letter stating welcome to the pilot pool / this is not a job offer / we will continue to do the background checks and other hoopla!

What does this all mean? YOU HAVE A JOB WITH FED EX! When? That is the unknown. Typically it starts up again right after peek.

Last year, when I got this letter, I called Kim Daniels and asked her what it all meant. She said, not to worry, you have a job, it is just a matter of when. I interviewed in Aug 01, got the letter some 6 weeks later, and started class in February.

Fed Ex has ALWAYS honored their hiring pool and as a side note; they have never furloughed.

So, what I am trying to say is; CONGRATULATIONS! If you have the letter, you have a job. It is that simple. Now, in the mean time, try not to go broke! ; )

Interviews

I realize each year is probably different; but in the past, how long after peak did interviews pick up again? Thanks for all of the info.
 
FDX Interviews

There were people interviewing last week here at FDX. Smaller numbers than earlier in the fall, but interviews none the less. I don't know how long into peak they will continue to interview. Everybody has a guess but nobody really knows for sure when hiring will pickup again. We're hoping for Jan, but that is just hoping.

The hiring for next year is unknown as most have said. The bean counters are saying 100 pilots for next year, but the pilot force is saying much more (very typical for each). Assuming there is zero growth in the industry and economy, and no one gets out on medical or early retirement, we will have to at least cover the scheduled retirements. The near future numbers are:

03' 83
04' 76
05' 128
06' 162'
07' 170

and so on.

There are a ton of opinions, rumors and alike circulating out there, but it is really an unknown. We only have our past to predict the future. Typically we shut down for peak and resume again in January or February.

Keep at it, update your profile, try not to go broke, and before you know it - you'll be on the inside looking out.

I interviewed 23/24 Sept and got a letter today, NO CALL, that I am in the pool. KD told us at the interview that if we were hired to expect to start late spring.
 
Email from an ACP today said that a class of 24 is scheduled for 18 Nov. Currently about 85 in the pool, this will bring it down to around 60.

Also heard someone say that they talked to Jack Lewis, and he said that the lawsuit against DHL for the international mail contract was a done deal, and that it will significantly increase the number of MD-11 pilots we need... lets hope.

The 18 Nov class is great news for concerned I am sure! Has anybody else heard any of the same thing?

Fedex Classes

I was in the Air Operations Center today and was also told by a fairly senior source that we would have a double (24) class starting on Nov 18th and that we had about 85 people in the pool. I would think that those 24 will or have already gotten a letter with the class date if the info is correct. Let's hope so!
 
I believe that I am #4 or so on the actual pool list and I have not heard anything yet.
It is definatly the best rumor that I have heard in a long time. I am praying that it is true.
 
Any word on future class sizes after the first of the year? Are they going to stay at 24 or drop back to 12? Anyone heard anything?
