Favorite snack foods during cruise?

When I was hauling night trash around the south, single pilot, I grew attached to Pop Tarts the strawberry and chocolate ones. Over two years I must of consumed an average of two or three boxes a week.

So, now with my current flying gig, as we prepare for a trip, the second item on my “after takeoff from house” checklist is to swing by the quickie store and snag me a box of Pop Tarts for the day’s trip.

They go well with orange or apple juice, heated or unheated.

At first everyone around the department go a giggle out of my choice of munchies, but now it’s not uncommon to find a box stashed away aboard one or two of our jets for emergencies.

Also, anyone ever spilled anything on a center console?

One of our training Captains did just last week. Tomato juice, a spicy V-8 or something like that. After fermenting in the hot sun for a day the odor has become part of the MEL, man it stinks!

Hey, anyone know what the brand is called or WHERE I can get bottled water that has a cherry or other flavoring added to it? I picked some up in the south and can't find it in Chicago.

Little Debbie cream filled oatmeal cookie things, and beef jerkey-the tougher the better- (hey, I'm from the south).

Both have shelf lives of about 2 decades. If the Debbies get smashed up in the flight bag I will pass on to the jerkey.

Couple sticks of jerkey and 20 oz of bottled water and you will be full for hours.

Snacks? NWA got me hooked on those "Body Smarts" candy bars. They are as good as most real candy and not quite so bad for you. Also, real beef jerky and a fuji apple

On a hot Harlingen, TX day and in between a quick turn back to DFW I bought some delicious chocolate Ice Cream. Right on Takeoff the Ice cream fell right into my flight bag which I discovered a few minutes later....to this day some of my pages are still stuck together. Moral of the story = Ice cream is worth it!

I once put a banana in one of the pockets of my helmet bag for a snack and forgot to eat it. I turned my helmet in to life support after the flight and tossed the helmet bag into my trunk. Didn't fly again for about a week and a half. That bad boy was RIPE! I had to wash the helmet bag twice to get the smell out and my checklists and in-flight guide had runny rotten banana stains on many pages. Maybe that jerky would have been a better idea...

You can get the flavored water at Aldi's in Chicago. I don't know the name of the stuff, but my girlfriend get's it there all the time.

In the old MU-2 days, it was 2 liter of Dew, Kong Dongs, one Whatchamakalit (sp) and a Bean and Beef buritto from QuikTrip...
It got messy some nights...

Now, being that I have to be clean cut now, I prefer Cashews, Granola Bars and Hot Chocolate.
Where do I find good Jerky in OK?

Recipe: Hot Chocolate Packet, 2 creamers (cream not powder) Usually the ones in the galley. Flavored ones are good also....and hot water. Mix the hot chocolate and the two creamers toghether till you come up with a paste, then add the hot water. Mix well.

hot beef jerky

My dad makes his own beef jerky. It's hot and the best stuff you've ever had. He sends it to me by the poundful. When I was flying P-3's, it was part of the climb checklist for me to break out a bag. By the time we leveled off, everyone was reaching for a drink! We used to do some pretty creative cooking, but nothing beats that fried rice with the fish sauce and being squeeeky-clean behind the ears after a few foamies on your way out of Thailand!

True Story....

One of our pilots put his lunch, in a brown bag, on top of the enormous storage space between the seats in the 1900D.

During takeoff roll, the lunch bag slides rapidly down the passenger aisle and launches off of the ramp over the spar around row 5. Food every where.

The crew looks back after climbing out and the pax are actually eating HIS LUNCH!!!!!

For me, it's gotta be a Cinabon, extra frosting and all, and a hot chocolate (or pepsi in the summer) to wash it all down. It's a lot for my meager FO pay but the sugar rush is worth it
Anyone know what happend to Chocolatebons? I sure miss 'em, Those things were heaven on Earth!

Oranges man!

I always bring a nice big navel orange with me. Helps with the nasty smell we sometimes get (either from the a/c or the captain!)

And the Dew, gotta have it. I once flew with a Capt, who was also a Dew freak. He told me how he had drank half of a 20 oz. bottle, then froze it partially. It created a nice Dew slush, or ice. He then poured a new Dew on top of that, so he had some nice Dew ice cubes. No water dillution from normal cubes, pure Dew. People who aren't Dew freaks will not understand how great this was!
