Its a terminal swap at LGA. Delta is tight to say the least with their shared NWA/DAL terminal. USair's terminal was a morgue. Delta now gets the larger next door terminal, in exchange for the Marine Air Terminal and rights to fly from DC to Brazil and Japan.

Delta also gets 125 LGA slots in exchange for 42 DCA slots.

Smart move by both sides.

The routes to NRT and San Paulo don't have to be flown from DCA, the deal was US Airways would acquire the rights to fly there. The company has already said they would use the Narita route from PHX, the Brazil flight will probably be flown from CLT which will also start RIO service in the fall.

Whats in it for USAIR ??

are the slots in DCA that big a deal? and profitable ?

Bailout...They will basically be a gov't contractor charging whatever they want for tix. Look at the cost of ORF where they are the largest carrier.
