Exercise

I like walking for exercise. Every day during my lunch hour, weather permitting, I go out and walk for at least fifteen minutes. Sometimes, the heat is blistering hot at noon, so I only walk the fifteen minutes. With fall coming, it'll cool down, so I'll try to walk for a half hour. On weekends, I walk in the morning for a half hour.

I try to walk every day. It's great for clearing your mind, and you don't need any special equipment.

Watch your weight, too. I'm not a big person and for a few years I was about thirty pounds overweight. I could feel it as I climbed the (steep) stairs at our old apartment. That scared me, so I vowed to lose weight. I lost the thirty (gained a few back :( ) and feel much better.

Thanks for all the great replies! For now, I will stick to stretching, running, situps, and pushups. Once I feel more comfortable, I will try to make things more intense, as I'm just starting out. I try to run 3-4 times per week, stretch daily, 50 pushups daily, and +90 situps daily.

All the above advice is right-on. I'll just throw my pennies in the pond.

- Maka an appointment with yourself to exercise (it works for me to schedule it into my week) - just like anything else. It keeps it from being so easy to "postpone"

- Find something you like to do. People who go to the gym and hate it, usually don't do it for very long. Something fun like Basketball at the Y, swimming laps, hiking offer a little more variety than a treadmill in the basement. It also helps to partner up with someone.

- I would say DO NOT buy one of those at-home do-it-all machines. 0 variety in that and it'll soon be holding your laundry or collecting dust. Running can be hard on the joints, but there are lots of other (and more fun) options.

- Lastly, it wouldn't hurt to get some pro advice. A personal trainer can work with you about achieving any goals you may have (certain body weight ...) and offer some fun ways to do it. Sure it'll cost you some change, but it's a wise investment. And as said above, excercising has limited benifit if you don't eat reasonably healthy.

In regards to your question on the effect to the knees from jogging, I believe it all depends on the person. I do some competitive running but usually can't jog/run more than 3-4 times a week however I know one marathoner that runs about 350 days per year with no problems. Sometimes, it's just in the genes. Same thing with hockey, I can't skate more than twice a week, others play for years, no problem. My knees just aren't that reliable.

I'd 2nd slide33's advice on using a personal trainer. If you have a good one they can make a world of difference.

Personally I just try and fit in the running, a little weight lifting and I'll be starting some weekly basketball next week (hackfest).

It is pretty scary how many overweight pilots I know or have seen in the airport. Exercise is an absolute must!!!! Good luck.

Join a gym!

Even when I was a broke 1st-year F/O I still plunked down my VISA and signed up. Go every day you are off.

As far as jogging is concerned -- it is bad for your joints if you take it to an extreme. I only jog on overnights, and then only when the hotel fitness center is lame (which is more often than not.)

Would you like to know the secret of a long and healthy life? Would you? OK, listen up, and don't tell everyone. It's called the Mediterannean lifetsyle! Lots of red wine, lots of garlic, very little red meat, lots of sex, lots of vegetables and everything cooked in olive oil (no butter and definitely no margarine.) Also stay away from food that comes out of boxes and vending machines (lots of partially-hydrogenated oils -- synthetic cholesterol.) And fried foods -- French fries are death on a plate!

In other words -- the exact opposite of the typical American airline pilot lifestyle (with the possible exception of the "lots of sex.')

Go organic!

We can't get cause and effect mixed up here. All the stuff about fried foods would definately be a cause of obesity. The finer points of the mediterranean life, though, may very well just be fringe benefits [effects] that hinge upon the earlier stipulations. (i.e. you eat right, exercise, and aren't fat.)
Maybe that would be a better incentive for some people; forget about telling them they'll live longer. Though maybe I am presumptuous as well in assuming that the vast majority of women don't confuse Mongo the airline pilot with a Greek god.
 
I disagree that walking is as good as running. For me personally, walking doesn't do crap. You gotta run and you gotta sweat!
 
Here's another 2 cents... Just do something you can live with, meaning something that wont make you hate to exercise. Also, as you get older...35 and beyond, respect what your body is telling you about pain and discomfort.

You might have to exercise (weight trainining and stretching) just so you can playsports you like rather than play the sports to exercise. Otherwise risk injury.:eek:

True True losing weight is 70% diet and 30% working out eat meals with lower percentage of carbs and fats and higher protein Do not eat before you go to bed Last meal should be at least a couple hrs before you go to sleep Just doing this should shread some pounds

Yes everyone should exercise unless you do not what to make it to retirement I work in medicine and i see it everyday People not too overweight but have to have bypass surgery because they eat burgers fries and shakes supersized at that They look in shape but their arteries are clogged worse than the pipes in the airport bathrooms I'm a cancer specialist and you do not even want to see what cancer does to a mind and body Continue eating crap and you'll increase your chances of it happen to you

Exercising tips ditto start off slow with the weights Some people are too gun ho and end up getting too sore to continue CONSISTENCY IS KEY At the begging it will take a few months to see results and harder work But after you build a foundation it's easier to keep off the weight and you'll not have to work out as much In college i built up some muscle not a lot but changing the diet and having that muscle to burn the calories enables me to work out only a couple times a week So far i've been able to keep my abs apparent Great luck to ya
