You won't see me arguing the US is a 'shining city on a hill' in that and a lot of matters. That being said I prefer my world with a heavy dose of cynicism so I doubt I would fit Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum's expat profile. Dubai is still in business because of it's less cool older brother Abu Dhabi who *surprise* has more nat gas/oil revenue then they know what to do with. To each there own, but this career is not worth chasing around the world anymore especially if home is a McVilla in the desert. Probably good fun for a few years, but the next 30 no thanks.

If they doubled their wages, I'd actually start taking them seriously as a career.. but for that kind of money, I'll hang tight and fly for a 3rd rate ACMI before I call that a career.

Your kidding right? I wouldn't pass on a 777 or 380 for anything.
 
The wage numbers alone are not the end-all. Keep in mind no taxes on your income at DXB. You will need to report to the feds for money earned over 87 grand (I think is the figure). Housing included, free transportation (pick up) to/from airport to go to work. Also, the base salary gets a flight hour pay, per hour flown in a month. Per diem given in local currency. For EK, you cant just look at the per month salary without looking at the entire package.

problem is the tax free comes with ANY overseas job, and the housing allowance is useless if you don't want to live there.. I fly contract in Asia, get paid a lot more, have business class travel home for my 3 weeks off, and get the tax break... they're simply non-competative in my view at EK.
 
All companies abroad are coming to the realization that their pay packages must be improved to the standards that are being paid in Asia now or they will have a lot of trouble attracting suitable candidates.

not really, fuel is a commodity, like Gold or other commodities, it's sold for the market price... they also don't have as much refining capacity as we do, so they in fact pay more.

Good service and full planes goes a long way to profits.. our over-unionized sky hags have made flying on the domestic carriers a last choice for the world traveller... that's a major problem we'll have to deal with for a long time.

But many would say that SW has a "more friendly" FA group (they are heavily unionized, btw).

Europe has had enough of their "Shiite.". They, along with Canada, are limiting the amount of flights allowed into certain countries. Germany says 4 cities only. France has something similar. Canada says 3 flights per week. Other countries will say the same, since Emirates can flood markets with seats, and hurt each countries incumbent airlines. It's called protectionism, and Emirates may have a hard time trying to figure out where to put all of those new planes. Companies like Lufthansa, Air France, Air Canada etc have money to pay for lobbyists in their own countries too. I know ALPA is looking into it too, and if they try more expansion here, that protectionism may get more looks here.

I've had mixed experiences on them... but I'd argue their very good pay goes a long way to making them a happier bunch... in the end however, this job was never originally intended to be a high paying career... it's become so over the years. Companies over seas, especially in Asia where I usually fly, and also in the Middle East however have a monopoly on superior service.. it's just a reality of their non-policically correct societies where they can simply fire a girl because she's too fat, married, or gives anyone bad service..

And you believe your job is any more secure? Standby if a high net worth pax doesn't like your attitude (or bad landing), talks to the Chairman of the company and summarily has you canned.

A pilot costs a lot of money to train for these companies that have ridiculously long training periods before you are released into the line, also the availability of qualified pilots in the international markets is drying up and companies are having a hard time recruiting pilots, you don't really see individuals fired as easily as it is believed. It is like that famous Tokyo $10 cup of coffee, we have all heard about it but you rarely come across one.
