Wow. I believe I'd swallow my pride and return to the gate to have those freshly flat-spotted main tires checked out. And if I was riding in the back, my confidence in that crew's abilities & judgement would now be pretty much shot.

It's also a good reminder to us all that as pilots everything we do is probably being observed (and maybe video'd) by someone.

Wow! The engines spool up really slow as well. Maybe the power levers were brought up early and it was the one time they spooled up quicker than normal?

Funny.

When I was doing upgrade IOE on the 73 the check airmen showed me something "cool". When turning onto the runway centerline prior to takeoff - advance the thrust levers to 40% when you're at 45 degrees to the centerline. By the time you're lined up, the engines will be spooled and you can then hit TOGA.

He then said - "but, if the engines spool asymmetrically, or one fails and you're not quite lined up, you're gonna look like a complete dik".

One question; WHY?! Are we in such a damned hurry that we need to save 1-2 seconds by spooling engines as we're turning sharply onto centerline? I see guys do it all the time and I still don't get it--maybe it makes them feel 'cool'..

Nothing to do with hurrying! Its the boredom of the job for many. Kind of like doing the 747 turn onto the runway! Do you really need to do that??

Bc those seconds add up

Well, of course.

I think we all know what V1 is.

My point, which you may have misunderstood, is that you don't know how accurate the numbers are and why not use all available runway.

Surf normally gets a 95 knot V1 and rotates at about 100 knots and thus enjoys the luxury of a generous margin most places he flies.

Performance calculation and input errors occur, stacking the deck in your favor should that occur isn't harmful. I think most of us are with ya on that.

Agreed... Damn... That's it... When ATC ask for a intersection Departure and I have the numbers for that intersection I'm going to refuse by saying, "I've got the numbers, but I feel safer going full length.. sorry" :)

I'm not supporting the technique. The caveat was contained in the last paragraph. If it goes badly, there's going to be an invitation to a morning tea without any biscuits.
