If we continue to have Orange Terror Alerts, NEVER. We will continue to have them near every holiday I bet, and that will continue to cause people problems, and foreign pilots with Visas will not be allowed to fly for airlines in the US. (Yes, they will still fly in here on individual flights---but not work here permanently)

Yet, amidst the Orange Alert, Senator Stevens' cabotage bill passed. Big business is concern number one in DC; not security.

U.S. companies go there for labor, not the other way around. It is the decision of management by U.S. companies to seek cheap labor. Just like your NIKE's are made by children in SE Asia that get paid a nickle a day and we all by them for a cool C-note...

That is stupid. Yeah, all foreigners are bad...I said that. Wrong. But, they will not import foreign flyers into the US---won't happen.

General,

I completely agree that they will not allow foreign pilots in the U.S. That was not my point. We have plenty of well qualified pilots to fill our cockpits.

My point was more on the lines of even suggesting that one day U.S. airlines will hire foreign nationals to fly here in order to reduce costs or even as a threat to reduce just does not make sense. there is now way that will fly with anyone involved.

I think examples like these are evidence of the fact that as we go forward we are really looking at a true global economy. It is the choice of our companies to take our business abroad - remember they get these jobs but the shareholders of our companies see these results on their bottom line. a two-way street. No different than companies leaving California for other states to save on the rising costs of doing business here in California. If someone really wanted to keep these jobs here we should have done something about them before they even left.

I know i don't want to lose my job to someone else just because they would be willing to do it for a lot less. I maybe nieve, but i hope we are not that easily replaced.

I agree with almost everything that has been said here, but most guys in the USA looking for a job overseas think that it's their God-Given RIGHT to take any job they want, where they want and on their terms.

WAKE UP.

It's no surprise that foreign airlines are kicking derriere' in a big way in profitability, service and standards. The foreign carriers aircraft are newer, in better condition, better serviced and the pax get what they want - cheap fares and good service. The cookie-chuckers are half the age of their American opposites, and are a lot easier on the eye, too.

WE have done this to ourselves, make no mistake. Wannabe's falling over themselves to take any job at any price. Where will it end? Who's going to stop it? Us? Go to any flight school or commuter crew room and look at all the pimply-faced youngsters who will do ANYTHING for that first job, including pay for it.

WE desperately need a union for ALL the pilots and crew members to face up to robber barons once and for all. How many more pay cuts are we going to face? How much of degradation in Conditions Of Service? When will it stop? It's NOT GOING TO STOP. You will fly more and more for less and less because we are to thick to organise and face the thieves. Do you think for ONE MINUTE that there isn't an ENRON going on this industry right now?

Indians (why are they the Bogeymen? - Every Indian I have met is more than OK) Pakistanis (ditto), Mexicans (ditto) and less than shiny white driver WILL be taking your jobs unless you do something about it! Go to your union, NOW. Tell the MEC to get on the line to USALPA - NOW! Organise, gentlemen, it's your only hope.

Education is the answer, as an American consumer we must educate ourselves about the companies we buy from.
Example, DeWalt closed an American assembly plant in the U.S. causing thousands of Americans to lose their jobs, they announced in their press release they were moving the plant to Mexico to take advantage of "lower labor costs". The price of DeWalt products have remained the same, result- larger profits. The cost to the U.S. economy is vast, unemployment, retraining(at govt. expense), and lost tax revinue. We ultimately pay the price as American citizens.

Face it, as far as this issue (cheap labor) goes, it's all moot. Once a critical mass of qualified labor is reached, game over. Go ahead, form a union and, when your demands aren't met, strike. That's when hundreds and thousands of qualified individuals willing to work for less walk in the door (country?) and replace you. If you're Shaquille O'Neal, you can demand more and hold your ground because you're "indispensible". That's not the case for customer service reps or, for that matter, pilots. Cry all you want, but globalization is upon us and, while I don't think a flood of foreign pilots is on the way, I do think that a flood of lower paying pilot jobs is and there is absolutely nothing any of us can do about it (except bemoan it on these boards). I don't like it any more than you do but it's reality and I have to accept it. Where I live the supermarket employees (another group that gets paid exceptionally well for what they do) went on strike and they have since been replaced lock and stock by new trainees willing to work for less (or pay more for benefits). I shake my head seeing them standing at the picket line while inside, they have already been replaced. The only way this will change, unfortunately, is for there to be a series of safety of flight issues (maybe even mishaps) that point to lack of experience of these lower cost crews (not suggesting that of anybody now but taking the scenario to its extreme) resulting in renewed bargaining power for higher paid, more experienced flight crews.
 
Agree with PBR in that if the US continues to lose jobs the guberment eventually see a decrease in their revenue. So the people who are working will be taxed even more. The guberment will not reduce the tax burden to coincide with the "revenue" loss.
tkr is correct in that globalization is a way of life now. The only recourse, for now, is to avoid purchasing non-USA products. This is getter tougher and is probably unrealisitic. Seems like our government and business leaders are bent on creating a "level" field worldwide. The only people for now who can afford the $90 Nikes are people in "modern" countries. If companies and government can lower/level the field, then eventually they can peddle their merchandise worldwide rather than just modern countries. Guess Wong Fu and Miguel are improving their "quality" of living while John Doe's is going down. It will be interesting to see if globalization is good for the common man or if it benefits big business and big government even more. My radar says the later.
