Dave,

Most of our stews are great, but some need to go. There should be a retirement age or a physical test to determine if they are safe to evacuate a full airplane when things go wrong. I flew with one hired in 1958, and I thought she needed a wheelchair herself. That really isn't safe.

Bye Bye--General Lee

Great suggestion GL.

If we require a physical test for the FAs, let’s also add a physical strength, agility and stamina component to the Class I medical certificate standards so that our pilots have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to deal with the increased physical demands often required during emergencies.

A timed three mile run and a basic PT test every six months would be great. Nothing harder than a high school ROTC program. I bet that will thin out some of the senior numbers real quick and bring back some furloughs.

At the very least, let’s implement these new Class I standards for all the civilian trained pilots.

DAL FA's

Since we are on the topic of Delta FA's...has anybody seen the new uniforms they are getting in 06 or 07? Some European Fashion designer came up with the idea and he recently had a fashion show over in Milian or some place like that. Let me tell ya...they looked AWESOME!!! on the models who were in them. My concern is how they will look on some of the older, more horizontally challenged, FA's at Delta. YIKES!!!!

And General...you are right...most the FA's at Delta do a really great job!

Do you disagree that there are probably quite a few old bag FAs who can't facilitate a quick egress in an emergency at Delta? Have you flown on Delta lately? Why are you disagreeing with this point? I really want to know. Is it because you are married or related to one? Seriously - why do you disagree with this when EVERYONE knows that a high percentage of Delta FAs are seriously old, overweight, and not phyiscally fit enough to help passengers in an emergency? It's a FACT. Either you are not a pilot or you are married to one of these old bags... Strange that you would disagree.

I think the point you are missing is that if you are going to bag on the FA's for being old, you might as well bag on the pilots too. The average age of a Delta FA and a Delta pilot are about the same. The age distributions are a bit different with the pilots being primarily concentrated between 40 and 55 while the FA's are more spread out between 30 and 65.

There are some FA's who should retire, but the same can be said for some DL captains.

Agreed. If pilots cannot assist passengers in an emergency egress situation, they should go too. However, I am willing to bet there are A LOT more FAs out there who would qualify as "impediments" in an emergency than pilots... This is basic...

Here is a factoid for you medflyer. Since so many older guys have retired at delta recently, there are less than 600 pilots over the age of 50 at Delta now. A lot of sh%t has happened to those guys but there must be some fairly young guys/gals who are flying bigger equipment and perhaps international as well, that a year or so ago was only a far off goal for them.

As for the FA's being old, they are old everywhere unless you are on one of the LCC. BTW there are some real oldies over at SWA as well, so no one has escaped these facts of life. When you start paying FA's 35 to 45 grand a year (after fifteen+ years),the job starts looking good compared to some of the other options out there.

Heavy,

I am not married or related to a Delta FA or any FA. I flew Delta last week.

Are there old, out-of-shape FAs who could handle an emergency better if they were younger and in better shape? Sure there are, probably the same percentage as there are old, pot-bellied, out-of-shape pilots.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If GL wants to test an FA’s physical ability to handle emergencies, then let’s do the same for pilots. The Class I medical only assesses a pilot’s general medical condition, not his physical strength and stamina.

The real objection to the age of the FA’s, other than aesthetics (‘eyeball liberty’ as Navy guys call it), is that the pilots don’t like the higher salaries the senior gals earn. They would rather have younger, lower paid FAs so that more Delta dollars are left for the remaining Delta pilots to squabble over.

They senior Delta pilots already cut loose the bottom of their own seniority list, now they want to dump the top of the Delta FA seniority list. Since the pilots are trapped in a shrinking pie, they can only try to increase the size of their slice.

 Dave, I think you have it all wrong! I fly Delta twice a week and I can count on one hand....(bird).....how many of the flight attendants were not into their late 50's early 60's. You don't see the pilots up front....we have better things to do than yap in the galley or work crosswords....they on the other hand are putting the face out there for Delta!! They need to look right...not perfect...but right!(i.e. not carrying a O2 bottle or in bad need of a wheel chair.)

Cut this crap with Oh the pilots want their money......give me a break!

Heavy and Tomct, Griffin pops up on the mil board from time to time and runs his mouth about issues he doesn't know much about. Don't get into a p1ssing contest with him. Just disregard his posts like everyone on the mil board does. BMD
